This paper explores the role of generics in social cognition. First, we explore the nature and effects of the most common form of generics about social kinds. Second, we discuss the nature and effects of a less common but equally important form of generics about social kinds. Finally, we consider the implications of this discussion for how we ought to use language about the social world.

Scientists, engineers, and healthcare professionals are currently developing a variety of new devices under the category of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Current and future applications are both medical/assistive (e.g., for communication) and non-medical (e.g., for gaming). This array of possibilities comes with ethical challenges for all stakeholders. As a result, BCIs have been an object of both hope and concern in various media. We argue that these conflicting sentiments can be productively understood in terms of personhood, specifically the impact of BCIs (...) on what it means to be a person and to be recognized as such by others. To understand the dynamics of personhood in the context of BCI use and investigate whether ethical guidance is required, a meeting entitled "BCIs and Personhood: A Deliberative Workshop" was held in May 2018. The limited access to public secondary education in rural regions of Haiti has impacted children who want to pursue their education beyond the primary level. This generic qualitative study aimed to explore the perceptions of informed Haitian educators and other educators who were knowledgeable about the lack of access to public secondary education in rural Haiti, specifically through the framework of polarities of democracy theory. Data were gathered by conducting semistructured interviews with 20 educators who were situated in both Haiti (...) and the United States. NVivo 14 was used to organize, code, and analyze the data. Thematic analysis revealed three themes: (a) the government prioritizes political and personal interests over rural residents’ education, (b) disparities need to be reduced between urban and rural areas, and (c) a revolution in education is needed to build more public secondary schools for rural residents. Public policy recommendations included investing in training rural individuals to create a database of academics who can meet local students’ educational demands. Positive social change can occur by enhancing governmental services, implementing strategies to revitalize the agricultural sector in rural regions, and promoting active participation of rural residents in shaping the design of public schools to ensure effective secondary education for their children. Democratic systems are characterized by enduring tensions among core values such as freedom, justice, equality, and participation. While democratic theory has long acknowledged these tensions, they are often approached through either/or decision-making frameworks that contribute to polarization, institutional instability, and declining public trust (Dahl, 2001; Rawls, 2001). Drawing on polarity theory and the work of William J. Benet, this article examines the Polarities of Democracy framework as a conceptual approach to leadership and social change. The framework conceptualizes democracy as a (...) dynamic system of interdependent values organized into five polarity pairs that must be managed rather than solved. Using a conceptual and theoretical methodology, the article situates the framework within democratic theory and systems thinking and analyzes its implications for leadership, governance, and public policy. The analysis suggests that unmanaged democratic polarities undermine democratic legitimacy, while intentional polarity management supports resilience, equity, and sustainability. The article concludes with leadership and policy recommendations for applying the framework in governance, civic engagement, and social change initiatives. (shrink)

As students begin their university journey, they will encounter numerous new experiences that could significantly impact their growth and development. But beyond this positive aspect lies a session of queries of confusion that would make the students question their true purpose, and position in life. Thus, this study explored the experiences of college students regarding existential crisis, its factors, effects, and its coping strategies. To attain the desired objectives, the research utilized a qualitative research design framed within the context of (...) interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to provide rich and detailed insights into the individual experiences. The six (6) participants of this study were chosen through a purposive sampling technique. It assisted the research in selecting respondents that are suitable for the descriptions and needs of the study. These respondents came from various university programs and levels, and they were asked to take part in semi-structured interviews, either in person or online. The findings showed that existential crises negatively affected their emotions, leading to feelings of numbness, emptiness, and isolation, which impacted their daily lives and social interactions. Their psychological issues arose from different causes. This includes academic and career pressures, familial and societal expectations, and being haunted by unfulfilled plans. As these things translate to tangible effects, the students seek aid through different coping mechanisms ranging from hobbies and spiritual help to clinical help. These findings imply that existential crisis is not trivial, as it encompasses a larger scope of feelings, emotions, and struggles that could potentially affect students’ emotional well-being and everyday lives. In this open peer commentary, we categorize the possible “neuroscience in national security” definitions of misuse of science and identify which, if any, are uniquely presented by advances in neuroscience. To define misuse, we first define what we would consider appropriate use: the application of reasonably safe and effective technology, based on valid and reliable scientific research, to serve a legitimate end. This definition presents distinct opportunities for assessing misuse: misuse is the application of invalid or unreliable science, or is (...) the use of reliable scientific methods to serve illegitimate ends. Ultimately, we conclude that while national security is often a politicized issue, assessing the state of scientific progress should not be. (shrink)

This research critically xamines the operation of the binary linguistic standards in philosophy tertiary education, using queer theory as a deconstructive lens. Employing collaborative autoethnography (CAE), this study explores the lived experiences and narratives of queer philosophy educators and students, underscoring the subjective experience as a vital source of insight. This approach aligns with queer theory (queering), allowing for the deconstruction of macro- and microlevel heteronormativity within the university and classroom contexts, revealing how students' daily encounters expose the fragility and (...) constructiveness of these binary standards. The research reveals how students and educators in Catholic institutions navigate and negotiate daily encounters, calling for a critical re-evaluation of knowledge production. By centering marginalized voices, this study aims to disrupt established epistemologies. This study's focus on queer philosophy educators and students may limit its generalizability. Perceptions of VITA satisfaction are the degree to which clients find various VITA site attributes important in enhancing their income tax preparation experience. The main dimensions of perceived VITA client satisfaction are reliability and accessibility, or service quality. The findings of this study reveal that between the two dimensions (reliability and accessibility); reliability has emerged as the most important predictor of client satisfaction. Panaetius of Rhodes (2nd century BC) is often considered a heterodox Stoic, exhibiting significant differences from his predecessors, Zeno, Cleanthes and Chrysippus. Notably, scholars of Stoicism have observed that Panaetius appears to have lost interest in the figure of the wise man as a model of moral and epistemic perfection, as conceived by the early Stoics. However, the textual evidence that would confirm this abandonment is inconclusive. The reasons behind this shift are also unclear. Therefore, this work has two (...) objectives. Firstly, it aims to critically review the textual material that suggests Panaetius lost interest in the wise man. Secondly, it aims to explain why Panaetius changed his focus. To achieve this, Panaetius will be presented as a recipient of a philosophical tradition interested in types of life. As such, he will criticise and modify the positions of his predecessors, who attached great importance to the sage. He will also introduce new theoretical developments that diminish the relevance of such a wise figure. This chapter uses the distinction between speculative and analytic philosophy as a background against which to present the summaries of the articles on the nature of philosophy by Mary Whiton Calkins, Dorothy Walsh and Marjorie Glicksman. Calkins and Walsh (in her first contribution) examine the relationship between philosophy and metaphysics: Calkins identifies philosophy with speculative metaphysics while Walsh argues that any ethical theory requires some underlying speculative metaphysics. In Walsh’s second contribution, she further argues that philosophical language rightly is (...) characteristically different from the languages of science, logic and poetry. Based on Maldonado-Torres’s formulation of the term, we conceive the decolonial turn as a form of liberating and decolonising reason beyond the liberal and Enlightened emancipation of rationality, and beyond the more radical Euro-critiques that have failed to consistently challenge the legacies of Eurocentrism and white male heteronormativity (often Eurocentric critiques of Eurocentrism). We complement Maldonado-Torres’s account of the decolonial turn in philosophy, theory and critique by providing an analysis of the trajectories of academic philosophy and clarifying the relevance of (...) decolonising philosophy and of the decolonial turn for current efforts in transforming philosophy in face of the challenges of social movements such as the Third World Liberation Front and Black Lives Matter in the United States, and Rhodes Must Fall in South Africa and England. After a brief analysis of the trajectory and current status of philosophy as a discipline in the modern Western research university, we provide examples of the decolonial turn and of decolonising philosophy in three areas: the engagement with (1) Asian and (2) Latin American philosophies, and (3) debates in the philosophy of race and gender. Delusions are unhinged hinge certainties. Delusions are defined as strongly anchored beliefs that do not change in the face of adverse evidence. The same goes for Wittgensteinian certainties. My paper refines the so-called framework views of delusion, presenting an argument that epistemically speaking, considering them to be certainties best accounts for delusions’ doxastic profile. Until now there has been little argument in favour of this position and the original proposals made too extreme predictions about the belief systems of delusional patients. (...) The endeavor to naturalize the philosophy of biology brings the problem of agency to the forefront, along with renewed attention to the organism and organicism. In this article, we argue for a mutualist approach to agency that starts to unravel layers of this complex issue by focusing on perception and action at the core of all biological agency. The mutuality of animals and their surroundings is seen as distinct from the typical concepts of organism, preexisting environment, and their interactions. Mutuality (...) means a deep ontological and epistemological compatibility between the organism and its surround. We suggest that the concept of direct perception developed and empirically researched in the tradition of the ecological approach, launched by James J. Gibson, offers a promising path to approach agency within an ecological–mutuality framework. At the core of our definition of agency is the animal’s ability to self-initiate actions and activities. Animals are the source of their own actions and activities within the mutual, co-defining relation to their surround. The place of agency related to mutuality has not been elaborated sufficiently thus far, in either biology or ecological psychology. In this article, our goal is to argue for the necessity of placing agency into an ecological–mutuality framework and of further research in this direction in line with Marjorie Grene’s call to assimilate Gibson’s theory of knowledge into biology. Além disso, demonstra a avaliação bromatológica dos principais alimentos utilizados para a alimentação do rebanho no Brasil, esses valores da composição nutricional servem de base, assim como as exigências para as técnicas matemáticas empregadas na (...) formulação manual de dietas. Como citado em outros trabalhos, as exigências dos animais variam em função do peso, idade, estado fisiológico etc. e que, para a elaboração de dietas, os nutrientes mais comumente trabalhados são a proteína bruta (PB), as necessidades energéticas podendo-se utilizar os nutrientes digestíveis totais (NDT), energia metabolizável (EM), energia digestível (ED) ou energia líquida (EL), as necessidades minerais dando ênfase aos de maior importância que são cálcio e fósforo e, raramente, as necessidades vitamínicas. Existem diferentes fontes teóricas e científicas que dispõem de tabelas de requerimentos nutricionais da espécie caprina de acordo com diferentes fatores, sendo eles os de peso vivo; ganho ou perda de peso; estado produtivo ou improdutivo de carne ou leite; animal em início, meio ou fim da gestação com um ou dois fetos; fêmeas paridas em lactação com uma ou duas crias ao pé etc. Também, segundo o NRC para caprinos (1981) e o para pequenos ruminantes (2007), os fatores de atividade leve, moderada ou intensa são levados em consideração. Apresentarei aqui algumas equações para predizer as exigências líquidas e as principais tabelas de requerimentos nutricionais dos caprinos expressas com base na necessidade do animal ou em percentual da ração, que servirão de base teórica para a formulação prática de rações para animais em diferentes situações. Equações de predição do consumo de matéria seca (CMS) É comum, na literatura acerca da criação e, principalmente, sobre a nutrição de caprinos observar que os especialistas trabalham com porcentagens de fornecimento de ingestão ou consumo de matéria seca (IMS ou CMS) para os animais de acordo com três fatores, um leva em consideração a origem do animal, outro o estado fisiológico e outro a categoria do animal. Para aclarar melhor vejamos a tabela 1 sobre as porcentagens de matéria seca em função do peso vivo para os caprinos. IMS (g/dia) = (423,2 x kg leite/dia) + 27,8 x kg0,75 + (440 x kg de GPD) + (6,75 x %de volumoso) Para um exemplo prático utilizando a fórmula proposta, suponhamos um caprino macho adulto (descartar a produção de leite = 0) com 50 kg PV, com ganho de peso diário de 100 g e recebendo uma dieta baseada em 80% de volumoso de boa qualidade, a IMS será: IMS (g/dia) = 27,8 x 50 kg0,75 + (440 x 0,1) + (6,75 x 80) = 1974 g MS/dia = 3,5% PV Outro exemplo prático utilizando a fórmula proposta pelo INRA, suponhamos uma cabra da raça Saanen com 60 kg de PV e produzindo 5 litros de leite/dia com 3,5% de gordura, com ganho de peso diário de 30 g e recebendo apenas concentrado, logo descartamos a parte volumosa então, a IMS será: IMS (g/dia) = (423,2 x 5) + (27,8 x 60 kg0,75) + (440 x 0,03) = 2730 g MS/dia = 4,54% PV Agora, a mesma cabra recebe suplementação volumosa à base de 40%, então: IMS (g/dia) = (423,2 x 5) + (27,8 x 60 kg0,75) + (440 x 0,03) + (6,75 x 40) = 3000 g MS/dia = 5% PV Outra forma de estimar a ingestão de matéria seca em gramas por dia é a proposta pelo AFRC (1993) que leva em consideração dois fatores, o peso vivo e a produção leiteira (com 3,5% de gordura), se houver, para cabras leiteiras prenhes e em lactação: CMS (kg/animal/dia) = 0,062 x PV0,75 + 0,305 x PL Para utilizar essa fórmula, suponhamos uma cabra da raça Saanen, de 50 kg de PV, produzindo 5 kg de leite com 3,5% de gordura. O NRC (2007) propõe as seguintes equações para o cálculo dos requerimentos de Ca e P, em diferentes categorias: 1. Mantença: Cálcio (g) = ((0,623 x CMS) + 0,228)/0,45 Fósforo (g) = (0,081 + (0,88 x CMS))/0,65 Onde: CMS = consumo de matéria seca em kg/dia. 2. Crescimento: Cálcio (g) = (11 x GPD)/0,45 Fósforo (g) = (6,50 x GPD)/0,65 Onde: GPD = ganho de peso diário em kg. 3. Produção de leite: Cálcio (g) = (1,40 x L)/0,45 Fósforo (g) = (1,00 x L)/0,65 Onde: L = produção de leite em kg. É importante ressaltar que os requerimentos para cabras em lactação devem ser somados com os de mantença; dessa forma, como exemplo prático, uma cabra com 50 kg de PV que produz 3 kg de leite/dia requer cerca de 11,5 g de Ca (9,3 g de mantença + 2,2 g de produção). 4. Gestação: Cálcio (g) = (0,23 x NC x PMnasc.)/0,45 Fósforo (g) = (0,132 x NC x PMnasc.)/0,65 Onde: NC = número de crias e PMnasc. = peso médio esperado da cria ou crias ao nascimento. As exigências nutricionais dos caprinos servem de alicerce para a elaboração de uma dieta, uma vez que, diante os cálculos, é necessário estimar uma quantidade x de um dado alimento para suprir uma exigência final seja proteica, energética ou qualquer outra. Essas tabelas de exigências dos caprinos servem de base após a caracterização do lote para que deve ser elaborada uma mistura. Por exemplo, um lote de caprinos com 30 kg de peso vivo em mantença, quais são as exigências de cada animal? Basta consultar a tabela 3 deste manual para depois ser levantado os alimentos e a composição destes e começar a elaborar a dieta. Relação volumoso:concentrado (v:c) para caprinos Além do balanceamento dos nutrientes necessários, a relação v:c da dieta depende, basicamente, da qualidade do volumoso e da ração concentrada. Se o volumoso possuir boa qualidade, consequentemente seu valor nutricional será melhor e, para caprinos em mantença por exemplo, pode ser empregado em 100% da ração; por sua vez, se o volumoso possuir péssima qualidade nutricional será necessária a adição de concentrado na dieta diária do animal, não esquecendo de que essa ração concentrada deverá atender os requisitos do animal, logo a ração deverá ser de boa qualidade e balanceada. Além da qualidade do volumoso e/ou concentrado, a relação v:c depende também do objetivo final de criação, isto é, se é necessário engordar os animais em menos tempo para abate, ou em pastagem etc., portanto, também depende da necessidade de ganho de peso diário para os animais, uma vez que a finalidade é um GPD maior é utilizada uma relação concentrada maior que a volumosa. Segundo estudos, a relação volumoso:concentrado influencia diretamente em padrões como consumo de matéria seca, presença de fibras, digestibilidade da matéria seca e nutrientes e atividades de mastigação e ruminação. Segundo esses estudos, uma relação mais próxima de 50:50 aumenta o teor de fibra, aumenta a ingestão de MS e aumenta a digestibilidade da MS, mas diminui a da fibra, e diminuem as atividades físicas da mastigação e o processo de ruminação. O NRC, 2007 sugere as proporções de v:c para caprinos as mesmas dos ovinos, que são divididas em diferentes situações. ALIMENTOS PARA CAPRINOS De forma geral, sabemos que os alimentos dividem-se em dois grupos os alimentos volumosos e os concentrados. Os volumosos são aqueles que possuem carga nutritiva menor e que o animal deve consumir em maior quantidade para suprir suas exigências nutricionais, o teor de proteína desses alimentos é variável, mas, na maior parte, não ultrapassa os 20%; por sua vez, a quantidade de fibra é grande já que esse grupo engloba as forragens, pastagens, fenos, palhas, silagens, raízes, tubérculos etc. Dentro da classificação de alimentos volumosos, ainda encontramos os volumosos “proteicos” que são representados pelas forrageiras leguminosas e algumas gramíneas. Os concentrados, por sua vez, são aqueles com alta carga nutricional e que o animal, mesmo consumindo poucas quantidades (em torno de 1 kg), supre todas suas exigências nutricionais; estes são divididos em alimentos que fornecem mais energia do que proteína (energéticos) como o milho, e nos que fornecem mais proteína que energia (proteicos) como o farelo de soja. Existem uma série de alimentos que podem ser utilizados na alimentação dos caprinos. Existem ainda, os alimentos provenientes da caatinga com alto potencial para a alimentação dos caprinos; a composição proteica desses alimentos e a parte comestível que pode ser fornecida aos caprinos é apresentada na tabela 21. Como a maioria dos caprinos são criados em regiões onde há escassez alimentar e baixas oportunidades de fornecimento de ração concentrada, há os alimentos não usuais que possuem enorme capacidade para manter os animais ou para que continuem produzindo em períodos de seca, por exemplo. Na região semiárida do Brasil, os alimentos não-convencionais mais comumente utilizados são cactáceas como coroa de frade, mandacaru e a palma; e outros como algaroba, faveira, moringa, umbu, maniçoba, leucena, aveloz etc. Uma das melhores alternativas alimentares em épocas de escassez é a produção e o fornecimento de fenos de gramíneas locais, silagem de sorgo e girassol. Na formulação de ração para os animais de produção, é importante levar em consideração que dos mais variados alimentos citados supra, e de tantos outros usados na alimentação e que não são usuais, existem perigos dado os fatores antinutricionais presentes nestes. Por exemplo, os taninos presentes no sorgo, as aflatoxinas presentes no farelo de amendoim, a sojina presente no farelo de soja, o efeito laxativo do farelo de trigo etc. Logo, quando se deseja formular uma dieta, é necessário obedecer às recomendações e nível de uso do ingrediente em quantidade ou porcentagem na ração. A tabela 23 mostra os níveis recomendados dos principais ingredientes para rações de caprinos. FORMULAÇÃO DE RAÇÃO PARA CAPRINOS A formulação de dietas para caprinos de corte ou leiteiros é análoga ao esquema de formulação para os demais ruminantes. Sempre é necessário categorizar os animais para determinar situações como peso vivo do animal, estado fisiológico, isto é, se está produzindo ou não, idade etc.; posteriormente, faz-se necessário a busca pelas exigências nutricionais dos animais mediante a literatura, seja através das publicações do NRC, AFRC ou CSIRO, caso o lote possua peso diferente das tabelas, por exemplo média de 27 kg de PV, basta utilizar as equações de predição para determinar as exigências de MS, PB, NDT ou EM, Ca e P; encontrada as exigências dos caprinos é necessário a avaliação de quais são os ingredientes disponíveis na propriedade e sua composição nutricional para ser utilizado de métodos matemáticos ou programações de computador para balancear as quantidades de cada um para que possam suprir a exigência do animal. Aqui, apresentarei situações de formulação práticas, que o profissional poderá se deparar no cotidiano profissional, dos quais os animais serão alimentados com o uso do creep-feeding; e animais em mantença, confinados para o ganho de peso, sob pastejo, gestantes e, por fim, em lactação. Para a determinação das exigências dos animais utilizarei os valores aqui descritos que foram compilados do NRC, 2007 e NUNES, 1998 descritos nas tabelas do capítulo 1. Para os alimentos serão usados os valores aqui presentes e compilados de diversos autores e descritos na tabela 20 do capítulo 2. A abordagem matemática utilizada para formular as dietas serão explicadas pelos métodos de formulação do quadrado de Pearson simples, que balanceia apenas um nutriente, ou duplo, que balanceia mais de um nutriente; pelo método algébrico com duas equações e dois ingredientes, ou três equações e três ou mais ingredientes, do qual esse método é capaz de sempre balancear dois ou três nutrientes, sendo os usados a PB e NDT. Os cálculos serão explicados de forma didática visando a facilidade para todos. EXEMPLO 1: formular dieta para uso em creep-feeding, para lote de cabritos com média de 10 kg PV e CMS à vontade. A ração deverá conter 20% PB e 80% de NDT. Os alimentos disponíveis são fubá de milho, raspa de mandioca e farelo de soja. Deixar 2% para suplemento mineral e sal. This chapter introduces the rationalist model of delusions. It begins by presenting John Campbell’s seminal proposal that delusions are caused top-down by pathological Wittgensteinian framework or hinge beliefs. After presenting Campbell’s rationalist account of delusions, the chapter raises and examines prominent objections by Tim Bayne & Elisabeth Pacherie as well as by Tim Thornton. The former make an important distinction between the aetiological top-down cognitive part and the epistemological rationalist framework part of Campbell’s account. The thesis that delusions are caused (...) top-down by pathological beliefs is not equivalent to the thesis that delusions are Wittgensteinian framework certainties. This chapter endorses this distinction. While the arguments against the top-down aspect are found to be more convincing – which motivates popular two-factor theories – the rationalist framework model of delusions is defended as an epistemologically promising account of delusion. Finally, this chapter examines a range of developments that have been made taking Campbell’s rationalism as a starting point. Most prominently the section examines Eilan’s early development of rationalism and Rhodes and Gipps’ proposal that delusions are not framework propositions but a product of their absence. (shrink)

This essay examines the quantitative aspects of Greco-Roman science, represented by a group of established disci¬plines, which since the fourth century BC were called mathēmata or mathē¬ma¬tikai epistē¬mai. In the group of mathēmata that in Antiquity normally comprised mathematics, mathematical astronomy, harmonics, mechanics and optics, we have also included geography. Using a dataset based on The Encyclopaedia of Ancient Natural Scientists, our essay considers a community of mathēmatikoi (as they called themselves), or ancient scientists (as they are defined for the (...) purposes of the present paper) from a sociological point of view, focusing on the size of the scientific population known to us and its disciplinary, temporal and geographical distribution. A diachronic comparison of neighboring and partly overlapping communities, ancient scientists and philosophers, allows the pattern of their interrelationship to be traced. An examination of centers of science throughout ancient history reveals that there were five major centers – Athens, Alexandria, Rhodes, Rome and Byzantium/Constantinople – that appear and replace one another in succession as leaders. These conclusions serve to reopen the issue of the place of mathēmata and mathēmatikoi in ancient society. (shrink)

The paper argues that the depiction of the Mediterranean coast of Africa in Ptolemy’s Geography was based on a source similar to the Stadiasmus of the Great Sea. Ptolemy’s and the Stadiasmus’ toponymy and distances between major points are mostly in good agreement. Ptolemy’s place names overlap with those of the Stadiasmus by 80%, and the total length of the coastline from Alexandria to Utica on Ptolemy’s map deviates from the Stadiasmus data by only 1% or 1.5%. A number of (...) serious disagreements between Ptolemy’s map and the Stadiasmus regarding the length of particular coastal stretches can be explained by assuming that Ptolemy had to tailor the distance data derived from periploi to his other sources, especially, to the longitudes of the key reference points, such as Cape Phyces, Cyrena, Berenica, Aesporis, Thena, and Carthage. A notable stretching and the subsequent contraction of the coast between Alexandria and Cyrenaica, as are exhibited by Ptolemy’s map relative to the Stadiasmus’ data, can be explained by assuming that several points on this coast were tied to the position of Crete, which was moved to the west being pushed by the westward shift of Rhodes. A sharp contraction of the two coastal stretches of the Great Sirte, oriented along the north-south direction, can be explained by Ptolemy’s erroneously underestimated value for the circumference of the Earth. The analysis of this contraction, as well as of the east-west stretching of the coast between Alexandria and Cyrene in angular terms relative to the modern map, makes it possible to assess the magnitude of Ptolemy’s error and to determine the length of his stade. This analysis shows that Ptolemy’s value for the circumference of the Earth must have been underestimated by approximately 20–27%, and Ptolemy’s stade must have been approximately 175–185 m length. Comparison of the Stadiasmus distance data with the modern map shows that the average length of the stade was close to 179 m or to the “common” stade of 185 m for the stretch between Alexandria and Berenice. This paper examines the interpretation Aristotle’s work in terms of his biological research and shows that his thought more clearly rests on his interest in the technai (“art” of “craft”). The paper begins with an examination of Marjorie Grene’s A Portrait Of Aristotle (Chicago, 1963) in which she attempts to show how Aristotle’s views rest on his investigations of plants and animals. I review multiple texts which Grene presents in support of her interpretation and show that these very passage (...) witness the vital place which technai played in Aristotle’s philosophy. I conclude the paper with a short sketch of what I take to be the significance of the technai in Aristotle’s thought. (shrink)

In diesem Aufsatz, werde ich die Frage des Naturalismus in Plessners Philosophie des organischen Lebens und seiner amerikanischen Rezeption, in besonders die philosophischen-biologischen Schriften von Marjorie Grene, untersuchen. Die amerikanische Philosophin Grene war die Hauptvertreterin Plessners im Englischen Sprachraum in 20sten Jahrhundert, die Plessners anthropologischen Argumentation in ihren Schriften zur Philosophie der Biologie aufgenommen und verwendet hat. Grene kritisierte in ihren frühen Schriften Heidegger, Sartre, und die Existenzphilosophie, die das menschliche Dasein von der Natur radikal absondert und die negative (...) Affekte wie Angst hervorhebt, in Vergleich mit Plessners weiterem Blick der Leibhaften, Sinnlichen, Tierischen Entwicklung des menschlichen Lebens. Die menschliche Existenz kann nicht dualistisch, wo „keine Brücke über den Abgrund zwischen Mensch und Tier führt,“ sondern nur biologisch-lebensphilosophisch oder ökologisch verstanden werden. Plessner und Grene setzen sich mit dem Reduktionismus des modernen Naturalismus auseinander und zeigen, wie das Natürliche weiter und ergänzt gedacht werden muss, weil der Naturalismus keine ausreichenden Begriffe für die Auslegung der Erscheinungen und Ausdrucksformen des organischen Lebens besitzt. Die Unterscheidung zwischen der "zentrischen Positionalität" des Tiers und der "exzentrischen Positionalität" des menschlichen Tiers ermöglicht eine holistisch aber differenzierte Beschreibung der Natur und Kultur, insbesondere die natürlichen Künstlichkeit, die der Kultur und das des gesellschaftlichen Lebens. Diese sind Grundlage für die geschichtliche und soziale Bildung, Aufbau, und Strukturierung der natürlichen Spontaneität, Produktivität, und Expressivität des Lebens und ermöglichen die dezentrierte, utopische, und persönliche Individuation der einzelnen Menschen im Lebenszusammenhang, was wichtige soziologische und auch ethische und politische Konsequenzen für Plessner und Grene hat: Der Mensch ist ein natürliches biologisches Individuum, das durchaus fähig ist, eine verantwortliche Person zu werden , und zwar durch die umfassende Beteiligung an (oder als ein einzigartiger Ausdruck) einer Kultur. This open access book presents a comparative study of two classics of world literature, offering the first sustained study of what unites and divides the Nicomachean Ethics and the Bhagavad Gita. -/- Asking what the texts think is the nature of moral action and how it relates to the highest good, Roopen Majithia shows how the Gita stresses the objectivity of knowledge and freedom from being a subject, while the Ethics emphasizes the knower, working out Aristotle’s central commitment to the (...) idea of substance as the primary building block of the world. Yet both the Gita and the Ethics explain variety in human behaviour in terms of three driving forces. Both agree moral agency is a construct that is a function of background, education and habit, presupposing a cultural, political and economic infrastructure. -/- What distinguishes the texts is how the content of right action is generated. The recent remarkable success of generative AI models to create text and images has already started altering our perspective of intelligence and the “uniqueness” of humanity in this world. Simultaneously, arguments on why AI will never exceed human intelligence are ever-present as seen in Landgrebe and Smith (2022). To address whether machines may rule the world after all, this paper zooms in on one of the aspects of intelligence Landgrebe and Smith (2022) neglected to consider: creativity. Using Rhodes four (...) Ps of creativity as a starting point, this paper evaluates the creative ability in visual generative AI models with respect to the state of the art in creativity theory. The most part of the reflective evaluation is performed through a case study in generating illustrations of dogs using the generative AI tool Midjourney. (shrink)

This article presents a newly discovered votive inscription found during the course of the 2013 survey conducted at the ancient city of Phaselis and in its territory. The inscription was found where the stairs to the acropolis from the southwest of the theatre end, in front of the west wall of the tower structure give access to the acropolis. This inscription in the Doric dialect, on a limestone block measuring 0.315 x 0.77 x 0.61 m., records a dedication to Athena (...) Polias. The letters 0.03 m. high, exhibit Late Archaic - Early Classical Period features ( - - - - ) and, consequently the inscription can be dated to the Vth century B.C. -/- Phaselis and its Chief Goddess Athena Polias From the earliest times of Athena worship, especially in the Aegean Islands and Hellas, this goddess was the protectress of cities, institutions and mythological heroes and she manifested this function in various ways. In one of the earliest recorded examples she carries the epithet ἐρυσίπτολις (guardian of the cities), and in another example, in a Linear B inscription discovered in the Palace of Knossos on Crete as Atana Potnia (a-ta-na-po-ti-ni-ja), the mistress of the palace. But perhaps the most striking myth relating to this role of Athena is undoubtedly that of the Palladion statue, the reason for the fall of Troy and for defeat in the Trojan War. In this context, Troy could resist the Achaeans for as long as it was protected by the Palladion, but after it was stolen by Odysseus and Diomedes, the city was captured by the Achaeans. Subsequently, Athens, Argos and Sparta, the most powerful Greek cities, as later the city of Rome, in order to obtain Athena’s protection and so to gain legitimization for the expansion of their empires, invented their own myths claiming that the Palladion statue from Troy was brought to their cities. In another myth the Goddess became the protectress of Tegea through giving Medusa’s hair as a protective image to a hero of the city. Athena’s frequently used epithets, Polias (Πολιάς), Poliouchos (Πολιοῦχος), and the epithet the protectress of the Athenians (Ἀθηνᾶ Ἀθηνῶν μεδέουσα), employed as a means of religious propaganda by the city of Athens when it established the Delian League which subsequently evolved into an empire, clearly indicate Athena was regarded as guardian of the cities. Particularly during the Archaic and Classical Periods, it was this aspect of Athena that, politically placed the Goddess amongst the most important of deities with Zeus and Apollo, and she is most commonly found with the epithet Polias. The epithet Polias or similar, refers in particular to the heart of these cities, to their acropoleis, where Athena Polias was usually worshipped. Her temples located on the heights of the cities made her role particularly visible as the main protecting goddess. One of the best examples of this “visibility”concerns the earliest record of the epithet Polias as, although she wasn’t the chief deity of Argos, within the sanctuary of Athena Polias located on Larisa hill an inscription was found which supplies us with the text of a cult regulation which is datable to the VIth century. B.C.. The Anatolian goddess of Malija, equal to Athena (in Lycia), was attested in Hittite texts from IInd millennium B.C.. This goddess worshipped in Lycia, close to the city of Phaselis, is similarly in a relationship with cities and acropoleis. The Inscribed Pillar of Ksanthos dating from the Vth century B.C. records that many acropoleis were seized with the help of Athena ptoliporthos (πτολίπορθος) “Sacker of Cities”. In the same inscription the city of Patara was named together with Malija and it may refer to the Patara of Malija as in the example of the Lindian Athena (Lindos, city of Athena). Moreover, the goddess Malija was named with the epithet Wedrẽñni (regional, municipal) the equivalent of the epithet Polias in Rhodiapolis. During the great colonization movements (750-550 B.C.) the colonists brought the cult of Athena Polias to many Mediterranean cities, as was the case for example for Lindos on the island of Rhodos. As a matter of fact the strongest ties between Lindos and the colonies which Rhodes founded was the cult of Athena. In consequence, these cities offered precious gifts to the Temple of Athena in Lindos as a demonstration of both their veneration of the goddess and of loyalty. According to myth, the city of Phaselis was colonized in 691/690 B.C. by a group under the leadership of Lakios from Lindos and the Athena cult of the mother city was brought to Phaselis. Thereafter the Phaselitai dedicated the helmets and sickles to Athena Lindia upon which was inscribed, “Having taken them from the Solymoi, the Phaselitai offered them to Athena Lindia, when Lakios was the leader of the colonists”. In addition to this, the other evidence concerning the presence of Athena in the city confirms that this deity was the chief goddess of Phaselis. During the Classical, and especially in the Hellenistic Period, depictions of Athena’s owl, of her Palladion and of Athena Promachos are found. As mentioned above, the epithet Polias usually draws attention to a city’s acropolis with the temple of Athena Polias located there. In the case of Phaselis, the find spot of these votive inscriptions, reused in a wall of a tower that was built in defense of the acropolis, provides an additional indication for the localization of Athena’s temple to the acropolis. This temple most probably was on the acropolis where there are the ruins of a columned building and large ashlar blocks possibly indicating the site of a temple; however, due to the dense vegetation and in the absence of excavations, at present this localisation cannot be stated with certainty. Another reference indicating that Athena Polias was the chief deity of the city was the presence of a holy relic in the Temple of Athena, the spear of the hero of the Trojan War Achilles. During his campaign against the Persians, Alexander the Great stayed in Phaselis in the winter of 334/333 B.C. and he left Achilles’ spear in the Temple of Athena at Phaselis. During the Hellenistic Period, Hellenistic Kings were mentioned with the chief deities of the Archaic and Classical periods as were the emperors in Roman Imperial Period. And according with this practice, the boule and demos of Phaselis worshipped Athena Polias together with the deified emperors, known from an honorific inscription for a certain Ptolemaios. Evidence from the Late Roman Period, especially from the IIIrd century A.D., records the Palladeios agons (ἀγὼν Παλλάδειος) were held in the city in honour of the Goddess Athena. Consequently, philological, epigraphic as well as numismatic evidence shows the Goddess Athena was the chief deity of the city of Phaselis from the Archaic Period into the Late Roman Period. As the epithet Polias on this votive inscription indicates, the goddess had a temple which should be located on the acropolis where the holy relic (Achilles’ spear) was kept and where the officials of the goddess conducted their functions. This new votive inscription provides record of the role Athena occupied in this early post-colonisation period of the city’s political and socio-cultural history. Further, it is also a physical document dating from the city’s Late Archaic-Early Classical Period, aiding in the evaluation of both Phaselis and of the wider region’s history of settlement. I try to read Aristotle's Poetics and Rhetoric as if they were an integral part of the Organon instead of separate works as they were sorted by Andronicus of Rhodes. The results are quite surprising. First, poetics and rhetoric, considered as sciences of speech, were much more intimately related to Aristotle's analytical logic than it is generally acknowledged by prominent interpreters. I maintain that Dialectics (the Topics) operated as a bridge leading from these two sciences to analytical logic; that (...) the types of speech encompassed by the four respective sciences did not only form a ladder, ascending from the more loose forms of persuasion to the more rigorous ones, but that there was between them a whole net of cross-currents and implications that were too much obvious for Aristotle to remain unaware of them, notwithstanding the fact that he doesn’t describe them anywhere. I maintain, in short, there was an unified science of persuasive speech, whose principles were implicitly intertwined in the fabric of Aristotle's Organon. By means of a comparative study of the works consecrated by Aristotle to poetics, rhetoric, dialectics and analytics, these principles could be unearthed and accurately expressed. Naturalist views of persons, such as those of the philosophers Annette Baier and Marjorie Grene, emphasize that human persons are cultural animals: We are living, embodied, organic beings, embedded in nature, the product of Darwinian evolution, but dependent on culture. Such naturalist views of persons typically eschew science fiction and look askance at the philosophical fantasies and thought experiments that often populate philosophical treatments of personal identity. Marge Piercy’s dystopian, cyberpunk, science fiction novel He, She and It weaves a (...) complex tale around the debate over the status of its central character Yod, a cyborg created in a lab but humanized through the efforts of two women, Malkah Shipman and her granddaughter Shira Shipman. Is Yod a person, despite having been engineered in a lab for a specific purpose? Piercy’s tale both challenges and ultimately supports a naturalist view of persons while simultaneously forewarning us of possible new styles of persons to come. (shrink)

According to the orthodox interpretation of Zeno's plurality paradoxes defended by Platonists, these arguments indirectly defend Parmenidean monism by showing that things are not many. But Simplicius, and the various other orthodox interpreters whom he discusses, were aware of and attempted to undermine a competing ‘heterodox’ interpretations, which were prominent in the peripatetic tradition, according to which some of Zeno’s arguments pose a threat to, or even specifically target, Parmenides. I argue that our surviving peripatetic reports according to which Zeno (...) challenged the idea that any being qualifies as a 'one' are credible and that attempts by ancient orthodox interpreters to accommodate these heterodox reports are not successful. In recent years, the term “Christian nationalism” has been popularized widely in mass media and academia. But the concept is still not well understood, and its connection to other MAGA-related phenomena like QAnon or “Christofascism” warrant examination. In what follows, I cover each in turn as they relate to President Trump’s MAGA base of support.

Axiom weakening is a technique that allows for a fine-grained repair of inconsistent ontologies. Its main advantage is that it repairs on- tologies by making axioms less restrictive rather than by deleting them, employing the use of refinement operators. In this paper, we build on pre- viously introduced axiom weakening for ALC, and make it much more irresistible by extending its definitions to deal with SROIQ, the expressive and decidable description logic underlying OWL 2 DL. We extend the definitions of (...) refinement operator to deal with SROIQ constructs, in particular with role hierarchies, cardinality constraints and nominals, and illustrate its application. Finally, we discuss the problem of termi- nation of an iterated weakening procedure. (shrink)
