There is a difference between the tasks of interpreting Sextus Empiricus and contesting his arguments. Usually, one does the latter relying on some version of the former. Though this seems obvious, it is easy to make mistakes in this endeavor. From this point, I draw two basic recommendations which we should follow, lest we take Sextus to hold implausible positions regarding his Five Modes. However, these recommendations lead us to interpret Sextus’ Pyrrhonism as a limited skepticism. In the final section, (...) as I suggest a counter-example to this commitment, I reconsider the notion of infinite (apeiron) in the Five Modes to better explain interpretation and criticism of Sextus’ arguments. Na literatura contemporânea da Epistemologia da memória existe o debate entre preservadorismo e gerativismo. A primeira posição indica que à memória cabe apenas preservar o conhecimento ou a justificação epistêmica gerada em outras fontes no passado. A segunda defende que a memória é sim capaz de gerar crenças com status epistêmico positivo, chegando em algumas ocasiões a estar em pé de igualdade com a experiência perceptiva. Nesta oportunidade, trago argumentos que favorecem o gerativismo. Começo circunscrevendo este debate como centrado no (...) papel epistêmico da memória. Delimito, então, alguns destes papéis a partir das teorias propostas, e procuro argumentar em favor da ausência de um elemento relevante para o devido entendimento do papel epistêmico desta capacidade. Por fim, defendo que o fenômeno da atenção é essencial para esta lacuna, e que sua inserção favorece teorias de cunho gerativista. O papel epistêmico da memória defendido, ao final, é o de permitir a inserção bem-sucedida de um conteúdo do passado no presente contexto. (shrink)

I argue in this dissertation that natural properties play a central role in David Lewis' modal realism. To argue in favor of this thesis I present: a bottom-up explanation of a top-down possible world metaphysics; a new definition of natural properties and natural fusion, a new mereological operation. To achieve these aims, in the first chapter, I contextualize the discussion, in the second I resume the discussion about universals in contemporary philosophy and argue that, considering the distinct formulations of the (...) problem, class nominalism combined with modal realism might be the best solution. Furthermore, I discuss Devitt's solution in which he defends that the problem about universals is, in fact, a pseudo problem. In the third chapter, I introduce a minimal ontology of properties, regarding natural properties, I discuss the existing definitions, present a new one and discuss some theories of similarity, a notion that is in the core of the definition I propose. Besides, I present how natural properties benefit the definition of terms of nomological package, linked to its fundamentality role. I also present some applications related to the rationality role that encompass some well-known philosophical problems of the second half of 20th century. In the fourth chapter, I present some varieties of philosophical realism, I consider the theoretical advantages of taking scientific realism as background and I discuss one more utility of natural properties, the solution to the problem of eligibility of reference or, the Putnam's paradox. In the fifth chapter, I discuss how mereology is important to link several aspects of Lewis' modal realism. For such, I discuss the relation between composition as identity and ontological innocence of mereology and I present the natural fusion mereology, a new mereological operation that aims to minimize the problems of unrestricted composition. While virtually everyone recognizes the moral permissibility of whistleblowing under certain circumstances, most theorists offer relatively conservative accounts of when it is allowed, and are reluctant to offer a full recommendation of the practice as an important tool towards addressing ethical failures in the workplace. We think that accounts such as these tend to overestimate the importance of professional or personal obligations, and underestimate the moral obligation to shine light on severe professional malfeasance. Of course, a whistleblower, even an anonymous (...) one, often faces serious threats of retaliation and harm to their professional livelihoods and well-being. To address these challenges we argue in favor of a practice that we will call Preemptive Anonymous Whistleblowing (PAW). Such whistleblowing is preemptive in that a whistleblower provides information about malfeasance to a party in a position to do something about it without first raising the worry to one’s immediate superiors. At first blush, such preemption may seem unsettling, and PAW admittedly raises a number of worrisome issues. We defend PAW, however, as part of a larger argument that whistleblowing is morally required more often than is commonly thought. The availability of PAW as an option provides a method for allaying the concern that whistleblowing can be overly burdensome due to the risks of job and career. Insofar as that concern can be allayed, it is feasible for there to be substantial moral requirements to engage in whistleblowing in cases where severe harms can be prevented. With high enough stakes, there is a moral requirement for whistleblowing. (shrink)

Philosophical problems about the part-whole relation have been discussed throughout the history of philosophy, at least since Plato and Aristotle. In contemporary philosophy, the understanding of these issues has benefited from the formal tools of Classical Extensional Mereology. This paper aims is to defend mereological restrictivism against some constraints imposed by the vagueness argument. To achieve this, the paper is divided into three parts. In the first, I introduce the special composition question (hereafter SCQ) as formulated by [Van Inwagen, 1990] (...) and briefly present the three sets of theories that proffer answers to it. In the second part, I focus on the vagueness argument, that was presented by [Lewis, 1986, ] and [Sider, 2007, ] to defend mereological universalism. In the third section, I introduce the theory of natural properties by David Lewis. From this theory, I propose a new mereological operation labeled as natural fusion. The purpose of this operation is to falsify one of the premises of the vagueness argument. Then, I discuss some examples and counter-examples to natural fusion. (shrink)

I present in this note an alternative answer to the princesses' earring problem, found in the first chapter of Cezar Augusto Mortari's book "Introdução à Lógica”.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the truth-functional interpretation of the logical connective of the material implication. The importance of such clarification lies in the fact that it allows avoiding the supposed paradoxes introduced by C. I. Lewis (1918). I argue that an adequate understanding of the history and purposes of logic is enough to dissolve them away. The defense is based on an exposition of propositional compositionalism. To compare, I also present Stalnaker’s (1968) alternative that seeks to (...) explain the implicit concept of conditionality of conditionals assertions. In order to reinforce my aim I expound the twelve different meanings of ‘implication’ stated by Corcoran (1993) in order to hold that a proper understanding of these meanings allows us to avoid ambiguities and confusions. Finally, I expect to show that despite the possible alternatives, compositionalism is still the best explanation for the truth-functionality account of logical connectives. (shrink)

Essa comunicação possui dois objetivos. Em primeiro lugar, pretendo esboçar as diferentes alternativas teóricas contemporâneas que procuram responder ao conhecido “ problema dos universais”. Para isso, apresentamos os nominalismos de predicados, classes, semelhanças e a teoria de tropos. Em segundo lugar, pretendo mostrar, inspirado no trabalho de David Lewis, como o nominalismo de classes, a noção de propriedade natural e uma teoria de mundos possíveis prometem resolver o problema em questão.

We show how a semantics based on Aristotle’s texts and ecthetic proofs can be reconstructed. All truth conditions are given by means of set inclusion. Perfect syllogisms reveal to be valid arguments that deserve a validity proof. It turns out of these proofs that transitivity of set inclusion is the necessary and sufficient condition for the validity and perfection of a syllogism. The proofs of validity for imperfect syllogisms are direct proofs without conversion in a calculus of natural deduction. Transitivity (...) of set inclusion turns out to be a necessary condition for the validity of imperfect syllogisms. As a consequence, it can be established what the main metalogical difference between a perfect and an imperfect syllogism is. The validity of the laws of conversion is also obtained by direct proofs. Finally, it is shown that and explained why some imperfect syllogisms satisfy the definition of a perfect syllogism. (shrink)

This work presents a post-positivist research framework to explain any surprising fact in the evolutionary path of a complex, dynamic and contingent social phenomenon. Primarily, it reconciles the ontological and epistemological assumptions of Critical Realism with the principles of American Pragmatism. Then, the research approach is presented: theoretical propositions about a social structure are translated into a set of grammar rules that acknowledges a pattern of sequences of events of either individual action or social interaction between actors within a real (...) social system. The result is a discrete mathematical model for a concrete category of social process based on these rules. Finally, data-grounded refinement of the theory is possible by the comparison between cases belonging to the same category, but differing about some contingent pattern of sequences of event outcomes. Consequently, their grammars differ in some pairs of context-sensitive rules that can explain this surprising fact, such that the derivation of this alternative historical trajectory of event outcomes becomes an extension to the early category of social process. In this sense, the proposed framework suggests there is a hierarchy of classes of grammars for middle-range explanations based upon the ontological assumption of the generative nature of social reality. Philosophers often rely on their own examples and intuitions, which can be problematic since philosophers are a small group with their own set of biases and limitations. Science fiction can assist with this problem through the provision of examples that are both designed by non-philosophers and intended to be thought-provoking and plausible. In particular, when philosophers teach, we can use science fiction for examples that raise relevant issues in interesting contexts, while also being fully fleshed out. In this paper, I (...) explain how I use Joss Whedon’s Firefly to teach political philosophy, ethics, and existentialism. I hope to show the usefulness of good science fiction for the purpose of teaching philosophy in new and engaging ways. (shrink)

This schedule, provided as a companion to my “Teaching Firefly” article, was used for a sophomore level philosophy course that was populated mostly by non-majors. The original idea for the course was to develop a popular culture philosophy course that would attract students from all over campus, which was meant to both introduce them to multiple philosophical ideas and theories and hopefully convince some of them to major or minor in philosophy. The course was quite successful at drawing Whedon fans (...) from across the university (after a certain amount of advertising through posters and social media). Students were very engaged with both discussions of episodes and the readings. (shrink)

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effects of postpartum diseases and body condition score (BCS) on the reproductive performance of dairy herds. Cows were monitored during the postpartum to diagnose diseases and changes in BCS. The cows were divided into those with no disease and those with one or more diseases. The incidence of diseases, pregnancy rate (PR) at the first postpartum service, number of days open, percentage of pregnant cows at 150d, and gestational loss were analyzed. No difference was observed (...) between healthy and diseased cows in the PR at the first service or for days open. Diseased cows showed greater gestational loss and the percentage of pregnant cows at 150d postpartum was higher among healthy cows. Cows with a BCS ≥ 3.0 at prepartum had a lower PR at the first service and shorter days open. This essay is an extended reflection on the relationship between death and love expressed in a fragment from Song of Songs 8:6: «Strong as death is love». The passage will be analyzed through a Jewish, Orthodox, and Catholic exegesis and literary reflection. In particular, the essay describes the role of a particular form of love (eros) within a particular form of education (education at the end of time). While eros has frequently been ignored or resigned to a purely sexualized role, (...) we will look closely at Augustine’s eulogy of his mother, Monica, in the Confessions, suggesting that perhaps the most visceral expression of eros is to be found in the phenomenology of death. We will also draw on the phenomenological manifestation of death by looking to the rich description of dying provided by Leo Tolstoy in his novella, The Death of Ivan Ilych. Together these investigations of eros and education yield a «curriculum of death», which draws on the re-conceptualist notion of curriculum. Our claim is that this curriculum of death offers a sense of urgency and seriousness found lacking in schools today, where death abounds, but is rarely if ever addressed in a humanistic way. This final methodological emphasis on the humanities elucidates more directly and critically the role of research for a curriculum of death within the dominance of social science in the field of education. This paper describes a method for the analysis of the evolutionary path of a complex, dynamic, and contingent social phenomenon in an empirical setting. Given empirical evidence of a surprising or anomalous fact, which contradicts the prediction of the wide-acknowledged theory, the goal is to formulate a plausible explanation based on the context of occurrence, taking a holistic and historical point of view. The procedure begins by translating theoretical propositions into grammar rules to describe patterns of either individual action or (...) interaction that may occur within the hypothesized social system. The result is a category of social process in which the objects are types of decision-making events carried by a stable community of actors over time, and the relationships between them are state transitions revealed in the sequences of event outcomes. Therefore, structural comparison between pairs of representative instances result in an extension of the category of social processes, relying on the configurations of contextual conditions that enable the occurrence of the new event outcome in specific empirical settings. After outlining a common critique in selected texts by Paulo Freire and Benedict XVI, we turn beyond the individual thinkers and into the mystagogy of their common religious traditions, beginning with an extended description of the Jewish ritual of Passover, foundational to a description of the Catholic celebration of the Eucharist to follow, but also definitive in its own right. In describing these two rituals we find a fuller consideration of the constructive responses by Freire and Benedict to the institutional (...) objectification of the human person in the eros of the common meal. This is the mysterious freedom of eros that is a necessary condition for the possibility of true and lasting communion, essential for any liberating education and often missing in Marxist and other accounts of critical pedagogy that ignore its theological roots. Rather than reacting to these limits to the present, well-known literature, we carve out an alternate path. (shrink)

O discurso a respeito dos Mundos Possíveis pode ser uma ferramenta bastante útil para a filosofia. Pode ser útil, por exemplo, para a compreensão das modalidades, da necessidade e da possibilidade. No entanto, para utilizar o discurso dos Mundos Possíveis devemos ter uma explicação satisfatória do caráter ontológico da Semântica dos Mundos Possíveis. Para isso, precisamos responder a questões do tipo: O que é um Mundo Possível? De que forma eles existem? Em quantos Mundos Possíveis podemos falar? Há diversas formas (...) de responder a estas perguntas. Neste trabalho pretendemos apresentar duas teorias que possuem uma abordagem realista para a noção de Mundo Possível. Cada uma dessas teorias atribuiu um caráter ontológico diferente para a noção de Mundo Possível e, portanto, uma metafísica diferente. A primeira delas é o Realismo Modal Extremo, teoria atribuída a David Lewis que defende a existência genuína de uma pluralidade de Mundos Possíveis. A segunda teoria é a teoria combinatória da possibilidade de David Armstrong. Essa teoria é uma versão das teorias do atualismo modal que também são teorias realista em relação à existência de mundos possíveis, mas que dão prioridade ao mundo atual. Por fim, pretendemos comparar as duas teorias e avaliar qual é mais vantajosa levando em consideração o custo ontológico de cada uma delas, (i.e., em relação ao número de entidades postuladas) para termos uma metafísica mais econômica. A ideia da primeira parte deste e-book surgiu durante a disciplina de Tópicos Especiais em Políticas Linguísticas ministrada por mim no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos de Linguagens (PPGEL) da Faculdade de Artes Letras de Comunicação (FAALC) da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) durante o segundo semestre de 2023. A segunda parte da obra surgiu de afinidades teóricas e metodológicas entre as professoras do curso de Letras da UFMS (Campo Grande) que orientam os capítulos 7, 8 e (...) 9 e traz diferentes questões relacionadas ao ensino de línguas. [...] Por fim, espero que esta obra possa contribuir para ampliar e qualificar as reflexões acerca das temáticas aqui levantadas e que possa suscitar novas propostas de pesquisa ou de intervenção no ensino de línguas e nas Políticas Linguísticas. This paper presents a discussion about how the necessity and teleology are present in the theory of nature in Empedocles and Aristotle. For this task we go through the fragments relate to the thought of Empedocles in the Poem From Nature as a central reference to the work The presocratic philosophers of Kirk and Raven, and the work Physics I and II of Aristotle.

In this paper, we discuss two recurring themes in Sosa’s work, reexamined in Judgment and Agency (SOSA, 2015) from a new angle, i.e. the place and importance of reflection in the cognitive economy of the epistemic agent, and epistemic value. Regarding the latter, Sosa suggests that knowing full well, which necessarily involves reflection, has value because it contributes to human flourishing. Although Sosa’s “new virtue epistemology” appears very promising in explaining different intuitions regarding epistemology and demonstrating that it is possible (...) to join reliabilist and responsibilist accounts of virtue epistemology, we believe that solving the value problem requires further clarification in order to truly explain the value of knowledge. The main aim of this paper is to propose that reflection is a performance that has epistemic value. This idea contains two parts: the first asserts that reflection has instrumental value. The second that reflective performance promotes an epistemic virtue that has final value. The first part is not controversial and most epistemologists would accept it. The second, however, asserts that there is a kind of epistemic good which can only be achieved through reflection. There is much controversy in this. (...) Reflection is understood here as a performance, an activity in which the person examines the evidence, content and reliability of their own beliefs. This performance may lead to different results, but if someone is capable of critically reflecting on their own beliefs in skeptical-dialectic contexts, whatever the results, this performance will produce positive epistemic states – contrary to people who, in the face of skeptical challenges, simply decide to remain intellectually immobile, maintaining a cowardly, arrogant or dogmatic position. The critical spirit with which someone discusses opinions in the context of dialectical disagreement, submitting them to the scrutiny of reason (that is, to the arguments for or against), is virtuous and has epistemic value. The consequence of this performance, the epistemic preference, has a final value, since deliberations based on free judgment have final value. (shrink)

In his speech delivered in 1957 at Uppsala University in Sweden, where he was due to his Nobel Prize in Literature award that same year, Albert Camus, even if in a sporadic and punctual use of his main theme (the role of the artist in contemporary society), establishes in his speech a curious distinction between “artists” and “art manufacturer”. This distinction is not merely semantic, but carries ethical, aesthetic and philosophical implications within the intellectual scope of the writer himself. Although (...) little addressed in the speech, this contrast deserves attention, as it helps us reflect on the tension between authenticity and the instrumentalization of art. (shrink)

In 2017, the neologism “Aporophobia”, developed by the Spanish philosopher Adela Cortina, professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Valencia, was elected as the word of the year. Such a concept was developed by Cortina in order to highlight what she calls a systemic rejection towards poverty and people without resources. Our goal in this paper is to explain the concept of aporophobia and the argumentative premises used by the philosopher to validate it, as well as to use contemporary (...) authors to reflect on the ways in which we can visualize and think such condition in our societies and contemporaneity. The text addresses the views of Thomas Hobbes and Friedrich Nietzsche on language and its peculiarities. Hobbes considers language essential for communication and social cohesion. However, he highlights four abuses of language: inconsistency in word meanings, the use of metaphors, a propensity for lying, and offensive language. On the other hand, Nietzsche regards words as metaphors that do not reflect the essential truth of objects but are conventions created by humans to represent them. Nietzsche sees language as a continuous series (...) of metaphorical overlays, where each signifier is a symbolic representation of meaning. Both Nietzsche and Hobbes argue that language is inherently vague, allowing for various interpretations and misunderstandings, even when people think they communicate clearly. Both, through different paths, offer complementary perspectives on its imperfections and limitations in conveying absolute truth. (shrink)

This article presented the apophatism of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, a mystical knowledge as refusing determine God as an objective concept and requires the abandonment of formulations that dare quit the Divine Mystery into categories. The current study is a pilot trial to examine the effects of a nonelective, classroom-based, teacher-implemented, mindfulness meditation intervention on standard clinical measures of mental health and affect in middle school children. A total of 101 healthy sixth-grade students (55 boys, 46 girls) were randomized to either an Asian history course with daily mindfulness meditation practice (intervention group) or an African history course with a matched experiential activity (active control group). Self-reported measures included the Youth Self Report (YSR), a modified (...) Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Measure –Revised. Both groups decreased significantly on clinical syndrome subscales and affect but did not differ in the extent of their improvements. Meditators were significantly less likely to develop suicidal ideation or thoughts of self-harm than controls. These results suggest that mindfulness training may yield both unique and non-specific benefits that are shared by other novel activities. (shrink)

This chapter describes the potential far‐reaching consequences of contemplative higher education for the fields of science and medicine.

We submit this brief in support of the Nonhuman Rights Project’s efforts to secure habeas corpus relief for the elephant named Happy. The Supreme Court, Bronx County, declined to grant habeas corpus relief and order Happy’s transfer to an elephant sanctuary, relying, in part, on previous decisions that denied habeas relief for the NhRP’s chimpanzee clients, Kiko and Tommy. Those decisions use incompatible conceptions of ‘person’ which, when properly understood, are either philosophically inadequate or, in fact, compatible with Happy’s personhood.

Logical reflection in early modern philosophy (EMP) is marked by the instability of the period, although it is more lasting (the Port-Royal Logic was nevertheless used as a handbook in philosophy courses until the end of the nineteenth century). It started in the sixteenth century and ended in the nineteenth century, a period of 300 years during which there were deep transformations in the conceptions of authority and scientific method. For the history of twentieth-century philosophy, it was the period of (...) “classical logic,” which lasted from the Renaissance to the linguistic turn conducted by Gottlob Frege. The period was used to be thought of as centuries of little or no original contribution to logic, in which conceptions of logic were tainted by rhetoric, epistemology, and psychologism in the worst sense (Kneale and Kneale 1962; Michael 1997). From the last decades of the twentieth century, however, scholars began to regard this period more accurately with respect to reflection and changes in logic and semantics. It has recently become a promising field for historical and conceptual research; today we can say that the legacy of early modern logical reformism has a philosophical, logical, and semantic value in itself. In this brief, we argue that there is a diversity of ways in which humans (Homo sapiens) are ‘persons’ and there are no non-arbitrary conceptions of ‘personhood’ that can include all humans and exclude all nonhuman animals. To do so we describe and assess the four most prominent conceptions of ‘personhood’ that can be found in the rulings concerning Kiko and Tommy, with particular focus on the most recent decision, Nonhuman Rights Project, Inc v Lavery.

O empenho filosófico destina-se não somente à compreensão do mundo e do homem, mas também, ainda que implicitamente, à educação deste mesmo homem, cuja vida se desenrola na relação com o mundo. A prática educativa, por sua vez, encerra em seu interior uma determinada visão do homem e do mundo e, portanto, inclui uma posição filosófica definida, mesmo que tal posição nem sempre seja objeto da consciência dos atores envolvidos no processo educativo. Não se pode negar, portanto, as íntimas relações (...) que se estabelecem entre Filosofia e Educação. Trata-se, certamente, não de sobreposições ou interferências arbitrárias, mas, isso sim, de mesclas teórico-conceituais que se foram tecendo juntas (o que corresponde ao sentido literal da palavra complexo ou complexidade), como os diferentes fios que se juntam para constituir uma única peça. Dos antigos gregos aos filósofos dos nossos dias, percebem-se muitas trilhas de aproximação entre os distintos campos do saber filosófico e da ciência pedagógica, evidenciando-se, desse modo, as possibilidades inauditas de entrecruzamento e de diálogo, de convergências e de aproximações entre os habitantes destes dois espaços de teorização-compreensão da vida, do homem e do mundo. Dos Pré-Socráticos a Popper, os mais destacados filósofos também se dedicaram, de uma forma ou de outra, a atividades de ensino e docência; por outro lado, a maior parte dos grandes pensadores da educação, como Rousseau, Vygotsky, Piaget, Gramsci e Paulo Freire, por exemplo, também se revestiu de uma bagagem filosófica significativa. Os ensaios reunidos neste volume estão assentados, precisamente, nesta perspectiva dialógica e convergente entre Filosofia e Educação. Objetivam, desse modo, servir aos intelectuais que se dedicam aos dois campos do saber, porque são filósofos-educadores ou educadores-filósofos. Destinam- se, ainda, aos estudantes de Filosofia e de Educação que, no esforço rigoroso e específico de suas áreas de investigação, sentem a necessidade de compreender sempre mais as interconexões entre o amor ao saber e a dedicação em educar. Não se trata de uma obra que encerra todas as questões nem que apresenta uma visão exaustiva de toda a história do pensamento filosófico em suas relações com o saber pedagógico. Mesmo assim, tem-se aqui uma abordagem bastante ampla de toda a filosofia, dos filósofos pré-socráticos aos pensadores atuais, em 22 diferentes perspectivas. Como o leitor poderá verificar, na sessão Sobre os Autores, os co-autores desta obra têm a mais alta qualificação em seus respectivos campos de investigação, o que confere a este trabalho um elevado grau de profundidade dos temas tratados. Quero ressaltar, ainda, que todos estes co-autores são profissionais profundamente comprometidos ao mesmo tempo com a Filosofia e com a Educação, não só na tarefa de elaboração teórica destes dois campos, mas na própria atividade profissional de pesquisa e de ensino. A cada um dos co-autores, quero manifestar minha mais profunda gratidão por todo o empenho na construção desta obra coletiva. Sem a presença generosa de cada um deles, este livro seria apenas mais um habitante do mundo da utopia. Mas, em razão de seu comprometimento, esta obra tornou-se realidade e, hoje, pode ser oferecida ao público brasileiro. Agradeço também ao Círculo de Estudos Bandeirantes, Órgão Cultural afiliado à Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, que acolheu este trabalho para publicação. Ressalto, com esta referência, que o Círculo de Estudos Bandeirantes, nas primeiras horas do século XX, foi a instituição responsável pelo surgimento das primeiras escolas superiores de Filosofia em Curitiba e no Estado do Paraná, contribuindo para fazer nascer a Universidade Federal do Paraná e a Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná. Esta entidade é um exemplo vivo do quanto a Filosofia e a Educação andam de mãos dadas nas trilhas da história. Fazemos votos de que as propostas aqui apresentadas sejam como sementes plantadas em terreno fértil, permitindo que brotem novos horizontes para a Filosofia e para a Educação neste nosso país, tão carente de ambas. A coletânea apresenta, sob a forma de artigos, problemas e soluções associados ao conceito e substância ao longo da história da filosofia. Sem pretender exaurir esse percurso, a coletânea contém 29 artigos redigidos por diversos especialistas brasileiros em Filosofia. Sua proposta é oferecer uma visão clara, acessível, precisa e atualizada desse recorte da história do conceito de filosofia, na expectativa de contribuir para o aperfeiçoamento do ensino e debate de filosofia no país. -/- The anthology presents, through a series of (...) articles, the intricacies of problems and solutions intertwined with the concept of substance across the annals of philosophical history. While not seeking to comprehensively cover this vast terrain, the collection comprises 29 articles penned by a diverse array of Brazilian specialists in Philosophy. Its overarching aim is to furnish a lucid, accessible, precise, and contemporaneous perspective on this facet of philosophical inquiry, with the aspiration of enriching the landscape of philosophical education and discourse in Brazil. Mindfulness training has been used to improve emotional wellbeing in early adolescents. However, little is known about treatment outcome moderators, or individual differences that may differentially impact responses to treatment. The current study focused on gender as a potential moderator for affective outcomes in response to school-based mindfulness training. Sixth grade students (N = 100) were randomly assigned to either the six weeks of mindfulness meditation or the active control group as part of a history class curriculum. Participants in the (...) mindfulness meditation group completed short mindfulness meditation sessions four to five times per week, in addition to didactic instruction (Asian history). The control group received matched experiential activity in addition to didactic instruction (African history) from the same teacher with no meditation component. Self-reported measures of emotional wellbeing/affect, mindfulness, and self-compassion were obtained at pre and post intervention. Meditators reported greater improvement in emotional wellbeing compared to those in the control group. Importantly, gender differences were detected, such that female meditators reported greater increases in positive affect compared to females in the control group, whereas male meditators and control males displayed equivalent gains. Uniquely among females but not males, increases in self-reported self-compassion were associated with improvements in affect. These findings support the efficacy of school-based mindfulness interventions, and interventions tailored to accommodate distinct developmental needs of female and male adolescents. (shrink)

O Brasil está entre os maiores produtores de ovo do mundo, onde o brasileiro consumiu no ano de 2023 em média 242 ovos per capita/ano, de acordo com a Associação Brasileira de Proteína Animal. Diante disso, há a preocupação com a forma de armazenamento desses ovos que serão consumidos, com isso, viu-se a necessidade de avaliar o tempo de prateleira dos ovos ao passar do tempo. Portanto, objetivou-se com este trabalho analisar as variações que ocorrem nos componentes do ovo em (...) diferentes dias após postura. As análises de ovos ocorreram no Departamento de Zootecnia da UFRPE, onde foram utilizados 90 ovos de poedeiras da linhagem Dekalb White avaliados em três períodos: Ovos frescos, no 14º dia e no 28º dia após a postura. Os ovos foram acondicionados em um refrigerador em temperatura média de 2 a 5 ºC. As variáveis analisadas foram: peso do ovo (PO), altura de albúmen (AA), cor da gema (CG), unidade de Haugh (UH), força de quebra da casca (FQC), espessura de casca (EC), altura de gema (AG), diâmetro da gema (DG), índice de gema (IG) e peso da casca (PC). Ao final das análises, os dados obtidos foram analisados pelo procedimento GLM do programa SAS versão 9.4 com nível de significância adotado de 5% de significância. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas para as variáveis de peso do ovo, força de quebra e peso da casca para os tempos avaliados. No entanto, houve diferença significativa para altura do albúmen (p<0,0001), unidade de Haugh (p<0,0001), espessura de casca (p<0,0001), índice de gema (p<0,0001), altura da gema (p<0,0001), diâmetro da gema (p<0,0016) e cor da gema (p<0,0448), onde as médias de AA, UH, AG e o IG diminuíram ao decorrer do tempo de armazenamento, e o DG aumentou com o aumento do tempo de armazenamento, o que pode significar a perca de qualidade do ovo. Conclui-se que ovos armazenados sob refrigeração apresentam perdas de qualidade interna ao decorrer do tempo de armazenamento, principalmente durante 28 dias de armazenamento. (shrink)

Resumo: Diante da preocupação e diminuição do uso de antimicrobianos como promotores de crescimento, aumentaram-se as buscas por aditivos que os substituam. Portanto, objetivou-se avaliar o uso de tanino condensado de Acácia-negra (Acacia mearnsii) na dieta de galinhas poedeiras na fase de cria (1 a 5 semanas) sob a biometria dos órgãos. Foram utilizadas 432 pintainhas de postura da linhagem Hy-line W80, distribuídas em delineamento inteiramente casualizado em 3 tratamentos com 8 repetições de 18 aves cada, sendo os tratamentos: dieta (...) sem aditivos; dieta com inclusão de bacitracina metileno disalicilato e dieta com inclusão de 1,00 kg/t de tanino condensado de Acácia-negra. Ao final, duas aves por unidade experimental foram selecionadas dentro do peso médio e eutanasiadas por deslocamento cervical para coleta e pesagem dos seguintes órgãos: baço, bursa, cecos, coração, fígado, timo, intestino, pâncreas e moela cheia e vazia, bem como realizada a mensuração do comprimento do intestino, bem como os cecos com fita métrica. Os dados obtidos foram analisados pelo procedimento GLM do programa SAS versão 9.4, e as médias comparadas pelo método de contrastes ortogonais (p≤0,05). Não foram encontrados efeito entre os tratamentos experimentais para o peso do baço, timo, bursa, pâncreas, coração, moela cheia e vazia, bem como para o comprimento do intestino. Houve efeito de tratamento para peso de fígado (p<0,0144) e intestino (p<0,0397); em relação ao comprimento houve efeito de tratamento para o ceco direito (p<0,0149) e ceco esquerdo (p<0,0159), onde as médias mostraram que os órgãos foram mais pesados e maiores no tratamento com adição de tanino condensado de Acácia-negra em comparação com os demais tratamentos. Diante disso, o tanino condensado de Acácia-negra se destaca como um bom substituto da bacitracina metileno disalicilato, pois proporcionou maior peso de fígado e maior comprimento intestinal.
