A tese Entre Lobos e Súditos: A Plasticidade do Homem em Hobbes investiga a psicofísica hobbesiana a partir da reconstrução do indivíduo como corpo em movimento, articulando física, sensação, imaginação, memória, paixões e ação. O objetivo central consiste em demonstrar que o modelo mecanicista proposto por Hobbes não descreve um indivíduo rígido, passivo ou meramente obediente às regras, mas um organismo dotado de dinâmica interna contínua, capaz de variação, aprendizagem e reorganização ao longo da experiência. A pesquisa parte da hipótese (...) de que a plasticidade capacidade de reconfiguração interna pela qual o indivíduo aprende, ajusta-se e estabiliza comportamentos constitui o eixo organizador da psicofísica hobbesiana e a chave para compreender tanto as possibilidades quanto os limites do poder soberano. O método adotado é analítico-reconstrutivo, com exame sistemático das obras de Hobbes, priorizando a articulação interna de seus conceitos e a progressão do argumento do nível físico ao comportamental. A investigação reconstrói o circuito psicofísico pelo qual impactos externos produzem sensação, a persistência do movimento gera imaginação e memória, e dessas emergem apetites, aversões, deliberação e vontade. A análise examina as paixões como direções qualificadas do conatus, entendido como movimento mínimo que pode ser reforçado, inibido ou redirecionado pela experiência, pelo hábito e pela antecipação de consequências. A investigação demonstra que esse modelo permite explicar a formação de disposições duráveis, a modulação dos afetos e a reorganização da conduta estrutura funcional cuja robustez descritiva encontra confirmação em modelagens posteriores do comportamento e da regulação corporal. A análise avança para a distinção entre potentia agregado de meios para obter bem futuro e potestas autoridade instituída, demonstrando que a soberania não anula a potentia dos indivíduos, mas a canaliza e redireciona através de mecanismos específicos, dentre os quais a punição ocupa lugar central. A punição opera como engenharia da conduta: inscreve no corpo vestígios de experiências aversivas que reorganizam o cálculo deliberativo, transforma o medo em hábito e o hábito em obrigação. A plasticidade revela-se estruturalmente ambivalente: funciona como condição de possibilidade do controle político e, simultaneamente, como fonte permanente de instabilidade. O súdito hobbesiano não é o lobo convertido, mas o lobo circunscrito: a diferença entre ambos reside não na estrutura interna, que permanece idêntica, mas no campo de possibilidades em que a potentia se exerce. There has been much discussion of so-called teleosemantic approaches to the naturalization of content. Such discussion, though, has been largely confined to simple, innate mental states with contents such as ?There is a fly here.? Even assuming we can solve the issues that crop up at this stage, an account of the content of human mental states will not get too far without an account of productivity: the ability to entertain indefinitely many thoughts. The best-known teleosemantic theory, Millikan's biosemantics, offers (...) an account of productivity in thought. According to anti-structuralists about rationality, such as Errol Lord and Benjamin Kiesewetter, incoherence is irrational because it guarantees a failure to respond to one's possessed reasons. For example, since having sufficient evidence for believing p entails not having sufficient evidence for believing not-p, it must be unreasonable to hold both beliefs. I argue that one of the most compelling explanations of how incoherence is psychologically possible, the fragmentation hypothesis, undermines this account of why it is irrational. This chapter examines how mindshaping theory can reconfigure our understanding of self-deception in four respects. First, our folk-psychological attributions of self-deception, which are traditionally regarded as epistemic tasks carried out by mindreading mechanisms, can be seen as part of a non-epistemic regulative mindshaping process intertwined with normative social expectations. Second, explanations about how it is possible for someone to be self-deceived should include mechanisms to shape the social environment and should revise the role of internal mechanisms insofar as they are (...) subject to the social normativity of an already shaped mind. Third, metacognitive processes involved in acknowledgments of one’s self-deceived state are primarily a way of self-regulating one’s behavior rather than simply uncovering hidden beliefs. Fourth, theories that explain the evolution of self-deception as an adaptation for interpersonal deception should also consider its role as a mindshaping tool for regulating relationships, simplifying interactions and promoting cooperative behavior. Linguistics of saying studies language in its birth. Language is the mental activity executed by speaking subjects. Linguistics of saying consists in analyzing speech acts as the result of an act of knowing. Speaking subjects, speak because they have something to say; they say something because they define themselves before the circumstance they are in; and this is possible because they are able to know. Speaking, then, is speaking, saying and knowing. In this sense there is a progressive determination. Knowing (...) makes possible saying, and saying determines speaking. In the realm of the philosophy of sounds and auditory experience there is an ongoing discussion concerned with the nature of sounds. One of the contestant views within this ontology of sound is that of the Property View, which holds that sounds are properties of the sounding objects. A way of developing this view is through the idea of dispositionalism, namely, by sustaining the theory according to which sounds are dispositional properties (Pasnau 1999; Kulvicki 2008; Roberts 2017). That portrayal, however, (...) is not sufficient, as it has not inquired the metaphysical debates about dispositions beyond the conditional analysis. In this paper, I try to advance this view by including recent developments (for instance Bird 2007; Vetter 2015) in the field of dispositionalism and I analyse whether this new version can sort out known and new objections to Property View. La filosofía de la ciencia se desarrolló durante la primera mitad del siglo xx bajo el supuesto de que la ciencia podía caracterizarse por la estructura lógica tanto del conocimiento articulado en las teorías más exitosas como de sus explicaciones. En la segunda mitad del siglo xx se cuestiona fuertemente esa idea, pero se sigue asumiendo que la filosofía de la ciencia debe hacerse siguiendo los cánones de una epistemología fundamentalista que considera que el avance de la ciencia pasa por (...) una ontología cada vez mas austera guiada por la idea de "mientras menos mejor". Desde esta perspectiva fundamentalista, el que las diferentes ciencias hablen de diferentes tipos de cosas es un obstáculo al entendimiento, producto de la imperfección del conocimiento actual. Este ideal nos invita a pensar que la epistemología debe hacerse reflexionando sobre el conocimiento articulado en nuestras teorías más austeras y nos compromete con propuestas reduccionistas problemáticas que no permiten explicar la diversidad de recursos epistémicos que de hecho utilizan los científicos. En este libro promovemos una epistemología que no sigue el lema de "mientras menos mejor", sino el de "organizar nuestros recursos epistémicos de manera que se genere entendimiento". Así, la misma estructura de las explicaciones y las prácticas (que incluye métodos y normas respecto de lo que se considera plausible y valioso) es lo que nos da la pauta para responder a la pregunta de qué es lo que hay. Esta estrategia epistémica nos obliga a hacer una filosofía de la ciencia muy cercana a la ciencia, reconociendo la pluralidad de sus métodos, objetivos y prácticas, sin reducir la filosofía de la ciencia a la sociología o a cualquier otra ciencia en particular. The enduring challenge of the "hard problem" of consciousness lies in explaining how physical processes give rise to subjective experience. This paper proposes and defends Network Panpsychism, a comprehensive metatheoretical framework designed to reframe this problem by synthesising core elements of traditional Panpsychism, Functionalism, and Integrated Information Theory (IIT). Network Panpsychism posits that (1) consciousness, or proto-consciousness, is a fundamental property of information-processing structures, where experience is constitutive of information processing itself; (2) individual conscious entities are nodes within hierarchically integrated (...) networks termed 'Psychospheres', a structure that effectively resolves the combination problem by replacing the logic of mereological aggregation with one of network integration; and (3) subjective experience (qualia) is not an epiphenomenon but possesses a teleological function: to facilitate high-fidelity information transfer and maintain stability within complex, nested cosmic systems. We argue that this framework provides a more coherent, unified, and empirically suggestive account of consciousness, bridging the explanatory gap and offering novel pathways for future research across philosophy, cognitive science, and physics. Why do we have social norms—of fairness, cooperation, trust, property, or gender? Modern-day Humeans, as I call them, believe these norms are best accounted for in cultural evolutionary terms, as adaptive solutions to recurrent problems of social interaction. In this paper, I discuss a challenge to this “Humean Program.” Social norms involve widespread behaviors, but also distinctive psychological attitudes and dispositions. According to the challenge, Humean accounts of norms leave their psychological side unexplained. They explain, say, why we share equally, (...) but not why we disapprove of those who don’t. I defend the Humean Program against this challenge. In particular, I suggest an idea for how to extend the Program to account for the psychological side of norms. Socially adaptive behaviors aren’t just likely to emerge in a group; They are also likely to be widely taught within it. The transmission of these behaviors through instruction explains why they are associated with distinctive normative attitudes and dispositions. These attitudes play a pedagogical role in helping transmit these behaviors to children and newcomers. (shrink)

I explore some of the connections between Grahek's model of asymbolic pain, as developed in Feeling Pain and Being in Pain, and the contemporary intentionalist discussion over evaluativist and imperativist models of pain. I will sketch a Grahekian version of imperativism that is both true to his main insights and better at confronting some of the challenges that his theory has faced since its publication.

The systematicity argument only challenges connectionism if systematicity is a general property of cognition. I examine this thesis in terms of properties of concepts. First, I propose that Evans's Generality Constraint only applies to attributions of belief. Then I defend a variety of conceptual pluralism, arguing that concepts share two fundamental properties related to centrality and belief-attribution, and contending that there are two kinds of concepts that differ in their compositional properties. Finally, I rely on Dual Systems Theory and on (...) differences between animal and human cognition to suggest a scenario of two processing systems that work on different kinds of concepts, with only one of them supporting full systematicity. I sketch a non-classical systematicity argument that rules out classicism as the basis of one of those systems given that it would wrongly entail that both systems are fully systematic. (shrink)

According to many philosophers, rationality is, at least in part, a matter of one’s attitudes cohering with one another. Theorists who endorse this idea have devoted much attention to formulating various coherence requirements. Surprisingly, they have said very little about what it takes for a set of attitudes to be coherent in general. We articulate and defend a general account on which a set of attitudes is coherent just in case and because it is logically possible for the attitudes to (...) be jointly satisfied in the sense of jointly fitting the world. Su teoría distingue cuatro tipos: pasivo o subiectionis, negativo o libertatis, positivo o civitatis y activo o de la ciudadanía activa. Al margen de las polémicas sobre su vigencia, se pretende relacionar la aportación de Jellinek con la concepción del consentimiento informado del Tribunal Constitucional español, quien lo ha definido como deber de abstención de los profesionales sanitarios (STC 37/2011, de 28 de marzo, entre otras), es decir, (...) como una negación de su competencia en la terminología de Hohfeld, o como un derecho de defensa. Debido a la adecuación de su estructura al contenido del consentimiento informado, el análisis se centrará en los estatus negativo y positivo. The search for understanding is a major aim of science. Traditionally, understanding has been undervalued in the philosophy of science because of its psychological underpinnings; nowadays, however, it is widely recognized that epistemology cannot be divorced from psychology as sharp as traditional epistemology required. This eliminates the main obstacle to give scientific understanding due attention in philosophy of science. My aim in this paper is to describe an account of scientific understanding as an emergent feature of our mastering of different (...) Experimental balance is usually understood as the control for the value of the conditions, other than the one under study, which are liable to affect the result of a test. We will discuss three different approaches to balance. ‘Millean balance’ requires to identify and equalize ex ante the value of these conditions in order to conduct solid causal inferences. ‘Fisherian balance’ measures ex post the influence of uncontrolled conditions through the analysis of variance. In ‘efficiency balance’ the value of the (...) antecedent conditions is decided ex ante according to the efficiency they yield in the estimation of the treatment outcome. Against some old arguments by John Worrall, we will show that in both Fisherian and efficiency balance there are good reasons to randomize the allocation of treatments, in particular when there is no agreement among experimenters as to the antecedent conditions to be controlled for. Two Mosaic figures (Thomas Jefferson and Confucius) will be introduced here as a means of gauging whether Democracy is solely the child of the West and/or whether it can also be traced to a conceptual foundation in Confucianism, the practical political philosophy of ancient China. The teachings of Confucius (c. 551-479 BCE) as a source of political thought appear to be comprehensive enough to provide us with a just model for the administration of the state.

It sought to answer three basic questions. What is the extent of the digitized education using different modalities as to Online teaching and learning, Modular Teaching/ Learning, Flexible and Blended Teaching and Learning?; What is the level of teachers? performance in terms of IPCRF Individual Performance Commitment Review Form) and (...) The retrieved data were subjected to computerized statistical computations through weighted mean, standard deviation and Pearson r formulas in determining the focal points, dispersals and direction of relationships between the independent and dependent variables The following findings in importance were sequentially obtained as to the extent of the digitized education using different modalities in online teaching / learning, the respondents recognized high extent of it because there were available resources which also provided accurate results of students? assessments. The extent of digitized education using modular teaching/learning, the respondents recognized high extent of it as they were informative, relevant and timely to every lesson which was also effective on students? performance. Flexible and Blended Teaching and Learning to which the respondent recognized very high extent of it as the teachers were flexible in every teaching modality and were computer literate with students? engagement and comprehension were well measured. There was a significant relationship between digitized education as to teaching modalities and teachers? performance in terms of Individual Performance Commitment Review Form and Classroom Observation Tool. It was concluded therefore that there was significant relationship between Digitized education and Teachers? performance so hypothesis was rejected. The following recommendations were hereby offered; maintenance of the quality deliverance of academic instructions in different modalities in a Digitized Education; the teachers must be thoroughly exposed to relevant and actual trainings for them to perform well in a Digitized education. This study aims to explore the significant experiences and the challenges that the non-PE major teachers faced in teaching Physical Education in the last-mile schools. With the limited number of teachers handling learners in last-mile schools, it is unavoidable to assign subjects that are not the expertise of the teacher which may possibly affect the teaching and learning process. -/- The participants of the study came from the 4 junior high schools only. The available number of non- PE majors teaching (...) physical education in the last mile school in the Province of Rodrigez were -/- 10 teachers from National High School. This study utilized Phenomenological Research Design. The Purposive Sampling was used to recruit the participants. The study uses semi-structured, open-ended questions for the data collection phase of the study. Using the Thematic Analysis of Data. -/- The strategies employed by non-physical education teachers to address challenges in teaching Physical Education showcases the power of creativity, detailed planning, and interdisciplinary approaches. The fact that some of the resources are not available or limited in the last mile school, teachers try to innovate and become resilient. The study reveals that learners enjoy PE subject and because of that the teacher responds to students’ energy level, outdoor enthusiasm, and hands-on learning preferences with high spirit. These insights provide valuable considerations for educators seeking to enhance the overall learning experience, fostering enthusiasm and engagement among students in last-mile schools. (shrink)

Despite considerable growth in understanding of various aspects of sporting and exercise embodiment over the last decade, in-depth investigations of embodied affectual experiences in running remain limited. Furthermore, within the corpus of literature investigating pleasure and the hedonic dimension in running, much of this research has focused on experiences of pleasure in relation to performance and achievement, or on specific affective states, such as enjoyment, derived after completing a run. We directly address this gap in the qualitative literature on sporting (...) and exercise embodiment by contributing novel insights on the mind-body pleasures of running via focusing analytic attention towards the pleasures recalled by runners as experienced during positive, rewarding running experiences. Applying conceptual insights drawn from sociological phenomenology, we analyse data from an in-depth, event-focused interview study with distance runners who reported positive, rewarding experiences in recent recreational runs. Through reflexive thematic analysis, we present findings in relation to three themes: (1) ‘running feels like it should’; (2) sensory engagements; and (3) time out. The study contributes fresh perspectives, both conceptually and in relation to data-collection approach, to a small literature on the lived experience of pleasure in sport, exercise and physical cultures. Hegel’s interpretation of Sophocles’ play Antigone is central to an understanding of woman’s role in the Hegelian system. Hegel is fascinated by this play and uses it in both the Phenomenology and the Philosophy of Right to demonstrate that familial ethical life is woman’s unique responsibility. Antigone is revealed as the paradigmatic figure of womanhood and family life in both the pagan and modern worlds although there are fundamental differences between these two worlds for Hegel. In order to situate the (...) interpretation of this play within its wider context I shall begin with a brief outline of the pagan world described in the Phenomenology. I will then consider the interpretation of this play within the analysis of the modern world in the Philosophy of Right. Throughout, the focus will be on woman’s role in Hegel’s philosophy. (shrink)
