100 Doorstopper Books to Level Up Your Spring Reading

Here’s one thing that bookworms can and should be proud of: We still have the ability to stay focused. In the age of the rapidly diminishing attention span, devoted book readers are holding the line. The simple act of finishing a novel is no small feat among all these 21st-century distractions. Go ahead and brag about it. We do.

But if you really want to earn some bonus points, consider queuing up a book from this collection: 100 doorstoppers, each clocking in at more than 500 pages. Think of it as a challenge, a test of mental discipline, or simply an opportunity to spend sustained time with a great story.

We ventured deep into the stacks for this one, gathering books both very old (circa 700 BCE, some say) and pretty new. And you’ve got quite a range of topics and genre options: college English class staples, 14th-century murder mysteries, multilayered dark academia, Pulitzer Prize–winning ecological parables, and touchstones of Black literary history.

Also in the mix: cryptic weird fiction, classic Westerns, Victorian queer romance, historically resonant ghost stories, whaling techniques from the 1800s, grim dystopian visions, and courageous utopian ones. Whew!
