"I Am the Best" (Korean내가 제일 잘 나가; RRNaega jeil jal naga) is a song recorded by the South Korean girl group 2NE1 for their self-titled second EP. The song, written and produced by long-time collaborator Teddy Park, was released for digital download by YG Entertainment as the EP's third single on June 24, 2011. "I Am the Best" integrates a number of musical genres (including electro house, electronic and hip hop) with synthesizer instrumentation, chanting, and Middle Eastern-inspired riffs. An empowerment anthem, its lyrics explore the themes of self-confidence, dominance, and narcissism.

"I Am the Best" was praised by domestic and international music critics, particularly the song's musical styles and 2NE1's charisma. Considered an iconic, influential K-pop song, it is recognized as a key contributor to the worldwide spread of the Korean wave. The song topped the South Korean Gaon Digital Chart and sold almost 3.8 million digital copies by August 2012, making it one of the country's best-selling girl-group singles.

It attracted renewed attention in the United States after its appearance in a 2014 Microsoft Surface Pro 3 commercial. The song then topped the Billboard World Digital Songs chart, making 2NE1 the first K-pop group (and the second Korean act) to do so in the chart's history. "I Am the Best" was released on Capitol Records in the US on December 10, 2014, and received airplay on American radio stations as one of the medium's few non-English songs. The song's music video, uploaded on June 27, 2011, incorporates a range of sets, props, attire and hairstyles.

Background and release

On April 18, 2011, YG Entertainment announced plans for 2NE1 to release a new series of singles, starting with Bom's solo track "Don't Cry" on April 21 and leading up to a new mini-album. The group would promote a new single every three weeks, intending to promote all six songs on their upcoming second mini-album.[1] They reunited for the mini-album's second single, "Lonely", on May 12 after the release of "Don't Cry". Both songs were commercially and critically successful.[2][3][4] YG announced on June 15 that the third single, "I Am the Best", would be released digitally on June 24; it would be a more intense song, with a quick tempo (combining electronic music and hip-hop) which would be familiar to club-culture youth.[5]

"I Am the Best" was released on June 24, 2011 for digital download and streaming as the third single from 2NE1's eponymous second EP. The song was written and produced by YG Entertainment collaborator Teddy Park, who had worked on most of the group's previous records.[6] A Japanese version of the single was released with the Japanese edition of the EP (Nolza) on September 21 on YGEX, a joint venture of YG Entertainment and the Japanese Avex record label.[7]

Music and lyrics

The three-minute, 28-second song is composed in the key of C major with a tempo of 128 beats per minute.[8] It has been described as a powerful, energetic, self-confident anthem similar to "Fire" (2009), 2NE1's debut single. "I Am the Best" incorporates a range of musical influences (electronic, electro house, hip-hop, African rhythms and reggae), synthesizers, Middle Eastern-inspired strings in the song's middle eight, and chants.[9][10][11][12] Calling it "the gold standard of anthemic bangers about self-confidence", Brag reviewer L. Singh cited "CL’s free-flowing rap" and the song's "often bordering on jarring" electronic soundscape.[13] A Rolling Stone article noted the song's ability to bridge cultures and genres, "gloriously weav[ing] a Middle Eastern synth line in the middle of a glossy electro-pop track."[14] An empowerment anthem, its lyrics explore self-confidence, dominance and narcissism with lyrics such as "If we’re talking about my value, I'm a billion-dollar baby".[13][15]

Critical reception

"I Am the Best" was praised by music critics. James Brooks of Pitchfork praised the song's energy, calling it "show-stopping" and noting 2NE1's "manic" and "larger-than-life" charisma.[16] In The New York Times, Jon Caramanica wrote that the song was "a postcard from the moment when K-pop, which had been reliably indebted to other countries’ sounds, was beginning to embrace excess as its own style." Caramanica called 2NE1 powerful influence in the industry, almost "ruthlessly modern", and wrote: "'I Am the Best' encapsulated its high-grade attitude".[17] Slant Magazine included "I Am the Best" on its list of 25 Best Singles of 2011, describing it as "a jaw-dropping, vibrant triumph of pure swagger and verve": "One of 2011’s best developments was that the Western world finally discovered the unmitigated joy of K-pop."[18] Spin's June 2012 list of the 21 Greatest K-Pop Songs of All Time ranked the song at number three, with Chuck Eddy writing that it "might've been the best single released on the planet in 2011".[19]

In October 2013, the Smithsonian Institution recognized "I Am the Best" as a key work in the spread of the Korean wave around the world with "Only One" by BoA, "Sorry, Sorry" by Super Junior, "The Boys" by Girls' Generation, "Gangnam Style" by Psy, and "Fantastic Baby" by Big Bang.[20] The song was ranked number four on Billboard's November 2019 "100 Greatest K-Pop Songs of the 2010s" list, which called it "undeniably iconic ... [and] will always be the track that bulldozed into our lives and pulled so many of us into the wondrous world of Korean pop".[10] The following month, British GQ called it the highlight of 2011 and a game-changer in a decade of K-pop: "2NE1's big sound and outré look not only brought K-pop to the curious attention of the Western fashion and music media, but became a visual blueprint for the genre's feisty 'girl crush' concept".[21]

Commercial performance

"I Am the Best" was commercially successful in South Korea, entering the Gaon Digital Chart at number four for the week ending June 25, 2011.[35] The song was streamed 632,923 times and sold 414,580 digital copies in a single day, and was ranked the week's sixth-bestselling song.[36][37] The following week, "I Am the Best" rose to number one the following week, 2NE1's fourth number-one single.[38] The song sold an additional 735,518 digital copies and was streamed 2,181,326 times, topping the download and streaming charts.[39][40] It fell to number nine in its third week, with the Infinite Challenge collaboration track "I Cheated" by GG (Park Myung-soo & G-Dragon) and Bom topping the chart.[41] By the end of 2011, the song had sold 3.47 million digital copies and was South Korea's fourth-bestselling single of the year.[42] In digital sales, streams and instrumental downloads, "I Am the Best" was the country's seventh-best-performing song on the year-end 2011 Gaon Digital Chart; the EP's other singles, "Lonely" and "Don't Cry", were fourth and fifth respectively.[43] The song was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for digital sales of over 100,000 copies.[44] It had a lukewarm chart performance, however, peaking at number 37 on the RIAJ Digital Track Chart and number 53 on the Japan Hot 100.[45][46]

Microsoft featured "I Am the Best" in its August 2014 "Head to Head" Surface Pro 3 commercial.[47][48] As a result of exposure from the commercial, the song topped Billboard's World Digital Songs chart in the United States. It was the first K-pop song to do so, and the fourth Korean song overall; the first three were Psy's singles, "Gangnam Style" (2012), "Gentleman" (2013) and "Hangover" (2014).[49] According to Nielsen SoundScan, the song sold 6,000 copies during the week ending October 10, 2014 (2NE1's best US sales week).[12] "I Am the Best" was the fifth-longest-charting single on the World Digital Songs chart by late 2020, tied with BTS' "Mic Drop" (2017).[50] The song was played on American radio stations, one of the medium's few non-English-language songs.[51][52]

Music video

The first preview of "I Am the Best"'s music video, the song's first 10 seconds sung by group leader CL, was released on June 19, 2011. The preview was posted on YG Life and YouTube with the song's cover art. YG Entertainment said that it would release an additional 10-second snippet of the song each day until the June 24 release date.[53] After a three-day delay, the song's music video premiered on 2NE1's YouTube channel on June 27.[54] It was directed by Seo Hyun-seung, who directed the previous 2NE1 music videos for "Fire" (2009), "Try to Follow Me" (2010) and "Can't Nobody" (2010).[55] A choreography practice video was uploaded to the group's channel on July 1.[56]

The music video has been called distinctive, unconventional and sophisticated, with a range of elaborate sets and props such as pyramids, diamonds, and globe-shaped chairs. The group makes a number of fashion statements, including wrestling {complete with a sparkling WWE championship belt), futuristic and punk-inspired attire, metal-studded leather pieces, and unconventional hairstyles; CL's resembles a bull’s horn, and Dara's resembles that of the Dragon Ball character Vegeta.[57][58] The video had over two million YouTube views in the two days after its release and four million views by July 1, considered impressive for a Korean act at the time.[59] It was one of YouTube's top 10 trending videos in several countries, including France, Hong Kong, Sweden, Taiwan, and Mexico.[55] In June 2012, Tom Breiham of Stereogum ranked it number 1 on the website's list of 20 Best K-pop Videos: "The song is ridiculously catchy and propulsive, and everything about the video – the editing, the choreography, the sheer volume of what-the-fuck imagery – works to support it."[25] The video exceeded 100 million total YouTube views on October 6, 2014, making 2NE1 one of the few K-pop groups to do so.[60]

Promotion and live performances

To promote the single, 2NE1 appeared on SBS's Inkigayo on June 26 and MBC's Show! Music Core in July. Their Inkigayo performance was praised; according to Kwon Ji-young of TV Daily, "The colorful makeup, hairstyles, and costumes that highlight the individual members' individuality made it impossible to take our eyes off the stage for a moment, and left a strong impression."[61] The group subsequently appeared on Show! Music Core for the first time on July 2, and were further complimented for their charisma.[62] The group announced a dance contest for the song on July 8 (after the release of the choreography practice video); 2NE1 and their choreographers would choose the four best submissions to win concert tickets, Adidas Originals merchandise, and 2NE1 stage clothing.[63][64] The winner was L.Y.N.T., a female dance troupe from Vietnam.[65] "I Am the Best" was on the set lists of 2NE1's three tours, including their Nolza tour which began at the Seoul Olympic Park on August 26, 2011.[66] It was the opening song on their 2012 New Evolution Global Tour, with a remix version used for an encore.[67] 2NE1 performed the song on two YG Family tours, including a motorcycle version on YG's 2014 Power World Tour.[citation needed]

They performed "I Am the Best" and "Lonely" at the 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Singapore, dressed in black with gold and silver ornaments.[68] 2NE1's stage reportedly had the ceremony's highest broadcast viewership, an average audience share of 5.56 percent.[69] On December 2, 2015, following a year's hiatus, 2NE1 gave a surprise performance at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong. After CL's solo performance of "The Baddest Female" and "Hello Bitches", the rest of the group unexpectedly appeared and performed "Fire" and "I Am the Best".[70] Fuse included the performance as one of 2015's best, and 2NE1 was one of the list's two non-Western acts.[71] On February 25, 2018, CL co-headlined the 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony with Exo and performed parts of the song; her audience included South Korean president Moon Jae-in, First Lady Kim Jung-sook, and Ivanka Trump.[72] In July of that year, it was ranked the eighth-best Olympic live musical performance of all time.[73]

In popular culture

"I Am the Best" appeared on several television series in South Korea and abroad, including the first episode of the 2018 South Korean drama series Something in the Rain (when Son Ye-jin's lead character casually dances to the song).[74] The song was used in the eighth week of season 10 of the American reality series So You Think You Can Dance, when Jenna Johnson dances with Mark Kanemura in a routine choreographed by Kanemura.[75][76] It was heard in the November 2019 South Park episode, "Board Girls", and in a dance performance of the Netflix original film Work It the following year.[77]

About choosing "I Am the Best" for its "Head to Head" Surface Pro 3 commercial, Microsoft said that the song's "confident lyrics and lively beats made a good fit with the new product's image".[78] A follow-up commercial, "Accolades", was broadcast in December 2014. The song was included in the Xbox 360 Kinect game Dance Central 3 (2012),[79] the video-game series' first K-pop song,[80] and was added to the soundtrack of Ubisoft's rhythm game Just Dance 2020.[81]
