With the onset of cold weather, Philippe Schnobb, Société de transport de Montréal (STM) board chair, and Stéphanie Gareau, Société de développement social (SDS) board chair, with Rosannie Filato, executive committee member responsible for homelessness, and several partners and community stakeholders in attendance, presented the measures being implemented as part of the Pôle de services en itinérance (PSI) initiative to support people who are experiencing homelessness.

With only twenty days until the opening of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP)’s 2017 Global Public Transport Summit, the two host organizations for the event – the AMT (Agence métropolitaine de transport) and the STM (the Société de transport de Montréal) – have outlined some of the highlights of its program for this 62nd international congress that will be held at the Montreal Convention Centre from May 15 to 17. The theme for this year’s summit is LEAD the TRANSITion, and the AMT and STM are inviting Montrealers to come take advantage of the Place au Transport event that will be held at Jean-Paul Riopelle Square.  

Rock ‘n’ Roll Oasis Montreal Marathon and the STM step up their support for runners

Competitor Canada, the company behind the popular Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) have signed a three-year partnership agreement regarding the Rock ‘n’ Roll Oasis Montreal Marathon & 1/2 Marathon. In 2017, this collaboration will make it much easier for the event’s 37,000 or more participants to get around as they will receive an STM transit pass valid for the day of their race.

TC Media and Métro newspaper ink an exclusive distribution deal with the STM

TC Media is pleased to announce it has signed an exclusive agreement with the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) to distribute Métro newspaper in the Montreal subway system as of February 1, 2016, for five years. This is the second such arrangement with Métro, which had an agreement for exclusive distribution within the Montreal metro system from the time the paper was first launched in March 2001 through to December 2010.

The Société de développement social (SDS), in collaboration with the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), are announcing the launch of Pair aidant, a pilot program to assess the potential employability of homeless persons hanging out in the Montréal métro. The pilot program starts today with interventions happening at Place-des-Arts station. For four weeks, a team composed of two volunteers and a social worker from St. Michaels Mission will conduct these interventions.

The tests are to be performed on two AZUR trains that where received respectively in April 2014 and in July 2015. The two trains will be operated during the day, mainly on the Orange and Blue lines. Testing without passengers will take place during off-peak hours over the next few months.

The reserved lane, along with bus priority traffic lights that will be installed at a later date, will benefit the nearly 10,000 trips taken daily aboard the 179 and 180 buses, the two main bus lines serving that corridor.

In order to help visitors get around the city for Montréal Museums Day next May 24, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will again be the official transporter, as it has been since the event was first held in 1987, and provide a free shuttle service. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Oasis Montreal Marathon and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) are proud to announce the strengthening of their partnership, which they formed in 2014. This year, the Marathon and the STM are taking their collaboration to new levels by offering participants in the 2015 Marathon a transit pass valid on race day, which will greatly facilitate their getting around.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is set to undertake major refurbishing work at Beaubien métro station this spring, which will require the complete closing of the station from May 4 to August 30, 2015, inclusively. Indeed, at its last public meeting, the board of directors awarded a contract to Groupe Axino inc. who will act as the general contractor in charge of all work.

Once again this year, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is partnering with Nuit blanche, as part of the MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE festival taking place this weekend, February 28 to March 1. Transit users taking part in the festivities can count on expanded transit service, with the métro running all night for the event, four free shuttle routes, night-time paratransit service, in addition to the usual all-night bus service.

The results of the 10th Origin-Destination (OD) survey were unveiled today. Conducted in fall 2013, the survey of 78,831 households paints a portrait of the daily comings and goings of Greater Montréal area residents and includes all modes of transportation. Société de transport de Montréal (STM) chairman Philippe Schnobb, together with Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) president and CEO Nicolas Girard, and Daniel Bergeron, Vice-president, Strategic Data and Metropolitan Affairs at the AMT, presented the highlights of the survey, which has been carried out every five years since 1970 and is the second largest study of its kind after the national census.

Something new in the métro : the STM, Bell, Rogers, TELUS and Videotron bring mobile connectivity to Montréal métro stations

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and its partners Bell, Rogers, TELUS and Videotron today announced that they have turned on a wireless network along a stretch of the Montréal metro. The green line segment, which runs through the downtown area between the Guy-Concordia and Saint-Laurent stations, is now equipped with leading edge mobile technology, such as 3G, 4G and 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution). Customers of all four wireless providers will be able to browse the Internet, watch videos, listen to streamed music, make and receive calls and so much more, directly from within the metro cars and throughout the tunnels and stations. Montréal becomes one of only a handful of cities in the world where the underground subway is equipped with a 4G LTE mobile network.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is unveiling its three-year capital expenditures program (PTI), in which its investment spending forecasts for 2015-2017, evaluated at nearly $2.5 billion, are outlined. These investments are needed to replace or upgrade equipment and infrastructure that have or will reach the end of their service life in the next few years, including métro cars.

Wim Delvoye and Patrick Bernatchez to produce works of art for the Montréal and Brussels métros

As part of their cultural exchange, Bruxelles Mobilité and Société de transport de Montréal (STM) today announced the names of the artists who will produce new public artworks for the Montréal and Brussels métros. Belgian artist Wim Delvoye will adorn Montréal’s Place-d’Armes station with his creation, while Québec artist Patrick Bernatchez is to reciprocate with a work of art for Brussels’ Trône station.

YELLOW METRO LINE: SECOND PHASE OF WEEKEND CLOSINGS FROM SEPTEMBER 13 TO DECEMBER 21

The STM is set to begin the second phase of work during which the métro’s Yellow line is shut down on weekends while repairs continue on the tunnel’s ceiling. The Yellow line will therefore be completely closed on Saturdays and Sundays from September 13 to December 21, as well as on Thanksgiving Monday, October 13. However, the line will be kept in service for the Montréal Marathon, during the September 27-28 weekend.

In preparation for the opening of the McGill University Medical Centre (MUHC), Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will undertake construction work at Vendôme métro station in October to improve its passenger capacity and flow in order to meet an increase in ridership expected to reach 38% by 2016. Some 5.6 million transit users passed through this station in 2013, roughly 19,000 per weekday.

STM ANNOUNCES THE DEPLOYMENT OF BUS PREFERENTIAL MEASURES ON VIAU

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is announcing that two reserved lanes will become operational on Viau. The first, between de Viterbe and Saint-Zotique, is reserved for buses and taxis, while the second, between Rosemont and Pierre-De Coubertin, is a pilot project, reserved for bus-taxi-bicycle use only. The pilot project for a bus-taxi-bicycle reserved lane will serve to test the lane-sharing ability of these three different transportation modes. Combined, the measures benefit some 13,000 trips taken daily, mainly by 136 – Viau bus users, since last August 11.

The Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) hosted the 2014 edition of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) world conference, which included two activities: the International Rail Rodeo and the Rail Conference. The event gave Canadian and American APTA members a unique opportunity to meet and share their knowledge and experience. The conference is the rail industry’s most popular forum on urban transportation, and the choice of Montréal as host city certainly contributed to making the participants’ experience a success.

As part of a technology assessment project carried out with the Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO), today, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will begin testing a fully electric bus on loan from Chinese firm BYD (Build Your Dreams). The standard-size vehicle features distinctive outside markings highlighting the "green" benefits of its technology. Road testing on the streets of Montréal is expected to last until April 2014.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has opened a new reserved lane on boulevard Côte-Vertu, used by bus lines 121, 174, 177, 196, 213, 216, 225, 470 and 475, which handle nearly 30,000 passenger rides per average weekday. The lane is reserved for buses and taxis, Monday to Friday, from 6:30 to 9 a.m. and from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in both directions.
