PuppEX Forky64/Trixie64/Dev64/Noble64/Slack64 Linux :: Build 260128, 260125, 251222, 251014, 251008, 250913, 250829 respectively 251110

NEWS 260128/260125 about PuppEX Forky64 - Build 260128/260125 - with Openbox/JWM respectively LXQt 2.3

My new DebianDog/Puppy Linux derivatives (two versions) are built using the Forky Build Script. They are compatible with Debian Forky - upcoming Debian 14. They are for UEFI computers and non-UEFI computers. Build 260128/260125 uses Openbox/JWM respectively LXQt 2.3 as Desktop Environment (DE). "Compatible with Debian 14" means that you can use the apt commands (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage etc.) and Synaptic for installing thousands of new Debian packages in PuppEX Forky64. PuppEX Forky64 can easily be installed manually (frugal install) to hard drive if you have at least one Linux system installed. You must also use Grub as boot loader. Read about how to do that at https://puppex.exton.se

SPECIAL NOTE
PuppEX Forky64 JWM/LXQt is not a "normal" Puppy Linux remaster, since it is based on DebianDog, which is a very small Debian live distribution shaped to look and act like Puppy Linux. Debian structure and behavior are untouched. See: https://github.com/DebianDog

HOW TO make a FRUGAL installation - Instruction...

SAVE without a FRUGAL installation
When you run version 260128 of PuppEX Forky64 from a USB stick you'll be asked to create a SAVE folder when you shut down the system. Such folder can be created on an ext4 partition. No need for a Grub installation then.

NOTE ABOUT SOUND: In PuppEX Forky64 Build 260128/260125 with JWM/LXQt you will NOT have sound when logged in as root.

Study all installed packages in Build 260128 respectively Build 260125...

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT PuppEX Forky64 Openbox/JWM/LXQt BUILD 260128/260125
Normally you run all Puppy Linux versions as root. I.e. you will automatically be logged in as root to the desktop. Not as regards Build 260128/260125 though. When the boot process is ready you will end up at LightDM's Login Manager page. Log in as the ordinary user puppy with password puppex. You will then enter the LXQt Desktop. You can also log in to Openbox/JWM/LXQt as root with password root. While logged in as the ordinary user puppy you can of course use Sudo to become root. Example command: sudo pcmanfm-qt.

Differences
Build 260128 works in the same way as Build 260125. The only difference is that Build 260128 uses Openbox alternatively JWM as DE (instead of LXQt). It also has Google Chrome installed. JWM is the traditional Puppy Linux DE. JWM (Joe's Window Manager) is a light-weight window manager for the X11 Window System. JWM is written in C and uses only Xlib at a minimum. Openbox is default in Build 260128 though.
With PCManFM and LXPanel. Very similar to the LXDE DE.

REMASTER PuppEX Forky64

Please note that you can build your own Puppy Forky64 version using PuppEX Forky64 JWM/LXQt as a "template". Do it like this:
1) Make a frugal install of PuppEX Forky64
2) Change everything to your liking
3) Start the remasterscript (Quick Remaster Gui).
Watch this screenshot.
(It is for PuppEX Trixie64, but the app/script works in the same way in PuppEX Forky64).

ALTERNATIVE: You can build your own DebianDog/Forky64 System following the instructions here...

NEWS 251222 ABOUT PuppEX Trixie64 - BUILD 251222 - with KDE Plasma 5:162

Some people think that using Wayland in a Linux System is very important. I have therefore built a PuppEX System which has Wayland installed. I call it PuppEX Trixie64 KDE Wayland 251222. My new Puppy Linux derivative is built using the Trixie Build Script (mklive-trixie). The new System is compatible with Debian Trixie - Debian 13. It is for UEFI computers and non-UEFI computers. Build 251222 uses KDE Plasma 5:162 as Desktop environment (DE). "Compatible with Debian 13" means that you can use the Apt command (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage etc.) and Synaptic for installing thousands of new Debian packages in PuppEX Trixie64. Study all pre-installed packages in PuppEx Trixie64 KDE.

Install to hard drive
PuppEX Trixie64 can easily be installed manually (frugal install) to hard drive if you have at least one Linux system installed. You must also use Grub as boot loader.

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Slack64 15.0 251110

This Puppy derivative is built by me using Puppy Linux Woof-CE Builder. It is compatible with Slackware 15.0 and uses kernel 6.17.7-aufs-exton. This Puppy system works very well on UEFI and non-UEFI computers. You can build your own Puppy Linux Slackware 15 compatible system using PuppEX as "groundwork". Just start the remaster tool (Remaster Puppy) and follow the instructions given by the remaster script. Study all installed packages in this PuppEX build.

I've installed NVIDIA's proprietary driver 58.82.09. That's because I could not get X to work on one of my computers with a new NVIDIA card RTX 4060 in any other way. The driver will be used if you have a relatively new NVIDIA card. If the card isn't automatically recognized after boot you shall run the command xorgwizard. When choosing card you shall go for Auto. After that restart X and you will hopefully enter the Desktop as root.

When booting you may see one error message regarding an unclean shutdown. Just ignore it and the boot will continue!

For a frugal installation of PuppEX Slack64 add the following boot lines to your existing Grub configuration (/boot/grub/grub.cfg):

menuentry 'PuppEX Slack64 exton build (FRUGAL - sdb2 - SAMSUNG) 251110' --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os $menuentry_id_option 'osprober-gnulinux-simple-6e5f8fe8-edd1-4cf7-86b9-bfb2ec23d803' {

if [ x$grub_platform = xxen ]; then insmod xzio; insmod lzopio; fi
    insmod part_gpt

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Dev64 with the ROX Desktop Environment - Build 251014

This Puppy derivative is made by me. It is built from Devuan Linux 5.0 (Daedalus) packages and packages built from woof-CE Recipes. I've also compiled a brand new kernel - 6.17.1-puppex. This is possibly one of the best PuppEX versions I've ever made. Everything just works! I could run the system very well on all of my six different computers. Among them on a really old computer Acer Aspire 5102WLMi from 2006. Study all installed packages in this PuppEX build. NOTE: Debian 12 bookworm (and thus Devuan 5.0) will be supported until June 30th, 2028. Note also that you can use the Apt command (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage etc.) and Synaptic for installing thousands of new Devuan/Debian packages in PuppEX Dev64.

About Devuan
Devuan GNU+Linux is a fork of Debian without systemd that allows users to reclaim control over their system by avoiding unnecessary entanglements and ensuring Init Freedom.

NVIDIA
I've installed NVIDIA's proprietary driver 58.82.09. That's because I could not get X to work on one of my computers with a new NVIDIA card RTX 4060 in any other way. The driver will be used if you have a relatively new NVIDIA card. If the card isn't automatically recognized after boot you shall run the command xorgwizard. When choosing card you shall go for Auto. After that restart X and you will hopefully enter the Desktop as root.

INSTALL PuppEX Dev64 to hard drive
That is best done in the same way (frugal) as regards PuppEX Jammy64 - see below.

How to make a frugal installation - Instruction...

IMPORTANT NOTE: The normal remasterpup2 script (which is included in all Puppy Linux versions) doesn't work in PuppEX Dev64. The remasterpup2 script works very well in PuppEX Trixie64 though. It works very well in PuppEX Slack64 15.0 too.
NOTE1: PuppEX Dev64 uses the original Devuan 5.0 repositories.

NOTE2
: The best way to run PuppEX Dev64 (or any Puppy Linux system) is still to run it from a USB stick and save the system changes on the stick. You will be asked about that when you reboot or shutdown your computer.

DEVELOPMENT TOOLS
If you need development tools you shall download and load puppex_devx-devuan.sfs. Put puppex_devx-devuan.sfs in the folder where you have "installed" PuppEX and then click on it to load it. Test it by running the command which git.

The root (superadmin) password

Normally you have no need for root's password in a Puppy Linux/PuppEX system (since you are always logged in automatically as root). But if you for some unknown reason should need it it is woofwoof in PuppEX Noble64 and PuppEX Slack64. In PuppEX Forky64, Dev64 and Trixie64 the password is root.
