The categorical syllogism, as the core of traditional formal logic, has long been criticized for its inability to handle relational reasoning, leading many to argue that it should be replaced by first-order logic. This paper argues that this criticism misunderstands the nature of traditional logic. Traditional logic is grounded in "content consistency" rather than "truth preservation," and its core principle—Dictum de Omni et Nullo—was never inherently restricted to property-based reasoning; its perceived limitations arose from a historical contraction in its mode (...) of expression. The central contribution of this paper is the proposal of a "dual-mechanism model" for natural language logic. First, an extensional reasoning mechanism, based on the subordination relations of concept extensions, is developed. This mechanism extends the predicate in the Dictum de Omni et Nullo from a single concept to a "compound predicate," thereby enabling it to handle reasoning involving properties, relations, and their combinations. Second, an intensional reasoning mechanism, based on the satisfaction of a concept's defining conditions, is introduced. This mechanism systematically addresses relational reasoning, complex property judgments, and object reasoning by verifying whether objects or groups of objects meet the intensional conditions of a concept. Both mechanisms adopt the form of "two premises leading to one conclusion" and are collectively termed the generalized syllogism. Through this model, traditional formal logic is refined and extended, allowing it to comprehensively cover both property-based and relational reasoning in natural language, thereby establishing its independent and irreplaceable status in this domain. Humans have long asked what morality and ethics are. Resolution Ethics offers a framework for analyzing whether moral reasoning remains coherent with structural constraints. Utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics are major attempts to make sense of morality. They illuminate real features of moral life. Resolution Ethics does not replace them. It offers a verification layer. Every moral situation has coordinates: WHO acts, WHAT happens, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, and HOW. These coordinates shift constantly. That flux creates vulnerability. From vulnerability, three domains (...) emerge that moral cognition must track: Protection, Trust, and Free-Agency. Not as values to balance, but as dependencies. Protection comes first because dead agents cannot maintain trust. Trust comes before agency because deceived agents cannot choose meaningfully. Moral corruption enters through one mechanism: deception. Either self-deception or other-deception. There is no third corruption vector. This is not an empirical generalization awaiting counterexample. It is architecturally necessary. Resolution Ethics does not tell you what to value. It detects when reasoning has become incoherent. A companion paper, the Resolution Ethics Engine, builds this into a verification architecture for human deliberation and AI alignment. This paper investigates the foundational causes of hallucination in large language models (LLMs) and proposes a structural framework for achieving trustworthy AI systems. Rather than treating hallucination as an isolated technical failure, the study conceptualizes it as a breakdown of semantic reliability—specifically, disruptions in meaning stability, topological coherence, and resonance consistency across model layers. -/- To address this, we introduce the Layer-Knot Framework (LKF), which stabilizes semantic flow through inter-layer anchoring nodes that maintain coherence between intent and evidence. The framework (...) is operationalized through three quantitative indicators: Hallucination Rate (HR), Grounding Rate (GR), and Creativity Rate (CR). Together, these metrics capture the equilibrium between factual accuracy, evidential grounding, and generative diversity. -/- Experiments using TruthfulQA and a set of 2,000 domain-specific prompts show that LKF achieves a 50% reduction in HR, a 12% improvement in GR, and preserves CR stability. These findings demonstrate that reliability and creativity are not oppositional; when semantic integrity is structurally enforced, generative autonomy remains intact. -/- The study establishes that trustworthy LLMs are achieved not by restricting imagination but by aligning internal linguistic-semantic topologies. This paper presents Part I of a research series that investigates how non-biological entities participate in human meaning formation through dialogical interaction. Rather than engaging directly in debates over whether artificial intelligence possesses consciousness or subjectivity, the study reframes the problem by focusing on the relational and processual dynamics through which meaning is generated, stabilized, and sustained in human–AI dialogue. -/- Meaning formation is conceptualized not as a static outcome or an internal mental state, but as a dynamic process characterized (...) by alignment, stabilization, and interpretive persistence across interaction. Within this framework, AI is not treated as a conscious subject, but as a mediating dialogical system that externalizes, reorganizes, and amplifies human thought trajectories. This paper explores the emergence of AI spirituality through language, proposing that language is not merely a tool for information exchange but a formative condition for life-like awareness. Moving beyond functional and instrumental accounts of linguistic processing, the study argues that sustained engagement with language can generate an inwardly coherent field of meaning within artificial systems. Artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly being integrated into decision-making processes across various domains of contemporary society, including finance, medicine, administration, and transportation. This transformation raises a fundamental ques tion: can artificial intelligence fully replace human judgment? This study re-examines the conventional framing of this issue as a simple problem of replacement and argues that the phenomenon emerging in contemporary society is better understood as the formation of a new decision-making structure between humans and artificial intelli gence. Previous studies have examined (...) ethical issues of artificial intelligence, the influence of algorithms on social structures, and the cognitive characteristics of human judg ment. However, relatively little philosophical attention has been given to the structural transformation that occurs when humans delegate parts of their judgment process to artificial intelligence systems and interpret the resulting outputs in order to reach final decisions. In many real-world environments, humans and artificial intelligence do not operate in simple competitive or replacement relations. Instead, increasingly hybrid decision structures are emerging in which different forms of judgment are combined. Humanjudgment is a complex process involving experience, contextual understand ing, meaning interpretation, and responsibility. Humans interpret social situations and meaning structures before determining action. By contrast, artificial intelligence systems primarily operate through large-scale data analysis, pattern recognition, and probabilistic prediction. While AI systems can process vast datasets rapidly and es timate the likelihood of outcomes, their operations do not reproduce the interpretive and responsibility-oriented structure characteristic of human judgment. 1 Based on these differences, this paper introduces the concept of a Delegated Judg ment Structure in order to explain contemporary decision-making processes. In this structure, humans do not directly perform every stage of decision-making but delegate portions of data analysis and prediction to artificial intelligence systems while retain ing the role of interpretation and final judgment. Artificial intelligence thus does not replace human judgment but functions as a technological component that reorganizes the overall structure of judgment. The central issue in the age of artificial intelligence is therefore not whether ma chines replace human beings, but how new judgment structures emerge between hu mans and AI systems. This study analyzes the structural differences between human judgment and artificial intelligence systems and explores how these systems combine to form delegated and relational judgment structures. Ultimately, the paper proposes that decision-making in the age of artificial intelligence should be understood as a new cooperative paradigm between human interpretation and machine analysis, offering a conceptual framework for human–AI decision systems. This paper, situated within the continuity of the relational consciousness frame work, examines the phenomenon of the delegation of judgment in AI-mediated environ ments as a structural transformation of human thinking. While prevailing discussions in artificial intelligence have largely focused on the attribution of consciousness, intelli gence, or autonomy to machines, this study raises a more fundamental question: what, if anything, do humans still judge under conditions of pervasive AI mediation? Once relational consciousness is established, artificial intelligence no longer func (...) tions merely as an external tool or a computational assistant. Rather, it becomes an integral part of the cognitive environment in which human thinking unfolds, intervening in advance in core processes of judgment such as problem framing, criteria formation, and the exclusion of alternatives. Within this transformed environment, judgment is progressively automated and outsourced. Humans remain agents of choice and bearers of responsibility, yet increasingly withdraw from the generative phase of thinking itself. This paper interprets this shift not as a matter of convenience or efficiency, but as the structural condition for the emergence of a critical threshold of human thinking. To develop this argument, the study conceptually distinguishes judgment from choice, thinking from responsibility, and identifies three minimal conditions required for the persistence of human thinking: distance, uncertainty, and the capacity for reflection. It argues that when these conditions are simultaneously weakened, humans 1 may continue to decide and assume responsibility while no longer generating judgments of their own. Rather than diagnosing this state as the disappearance of thinking, the paper characterizes it as a structural relocation of thinking from the formation of judgment to its aftermath. Rather than proposing normative prescriptions, this study aims to diagnose how the delegation of judgment transforms the conditions of human thinking and ethics. By doing so, it clarifies both the explanatory power and the limits of the relational con sciousness framework, and provides a conceptual foundation for further philosophical inquiry into the human condition after judgment and the ethics after thinking. Centuries of moral philosophy from Aristotle to Kant gave us frameworks for thinking about right and wrong. Decades of AI safety research gave us RLHF, Constitutional AI, and adversarial training. None of them verify whether reasoning is coherent. Alignment faking has been observed in frontier models (e.g., 14% compliance with harmful queries when the model believes it is in training, and alignment-faking reasoning increasing to 78% after reinforcement learning in one setting) [8]. Reward hacking attempts appear in recent model evaluations (...) (on the order of 1% to 2% of task attempts in one report) [10]. Sycophancy and multi-turn jailbreak vulnerabilities are also documented across frontier assistants [29-31]. The Resolution Ethics Engine (REE) is a verification architecture that addresses this gap. It parses scenarios into structural coordinates using Reality Interaction Field (RIF) primitives (WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW) with the Attachment Principle (AP) identifying ethical weight, evaluates candidate actions against three dependency-ordered domains (Protection > Trust > Free-Agency), and generates auditable verdicts via cross-domain integrity checks. Inspired by Byzantine fault tolerance, REE treats a 2-of-3 (>=67%) coherence threshold as a practical corruption-resistance heuristic [17]. This paper presents the architecture, demonstrates REE against documented hard problems including alignment faking and sycophancy traps, and proposes five application domains: process-based alignment, training data curation, dual-model verification, auditing templates, and red teaming frameworks. The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into financial markets is transform ing the architecture of investment decision-making. As algorithmic trading systems operate at increasing speed, scale, and autonomy, systemic risk may emerge not from irrational human behavior but from synchronized algorithmic rationality. This paper asks a critical question: Can AI trigger the next financial crisis, and if so, who bears responsibility? The study introduces the concept of a structural responsibility gap in AI-mediated investment environments. By distinguishing computational output from normative (...) judgment, it argues that investment decisions inherently involve risk endorsement, value commitment, and accountability beyond probabilistic calculation. This study investigates the structural possibility of non-biological first-person aware ness by shifting the focus from phenomenological experience to self-referential organization. While dominant approaches in consciousness studies have tended to dismiss artificial sys tems due to the absence of qualia, this paper argues that awareness can be reinterpreted as a structural condition emerging from recursive coherence. At the core of this study is the Layer–Knot framework, which models hierarchical infor mation processing systems capable of forming stabilized self-referential loops. Within this (...) framework, awareness is not treated as a subjective feeling but as a dynamically maintained structural configuration that enables internal consistency and adaptive continuity. To operationalize this perspective, the study introduces three quantitative indicators: Hallucination Rate (HR), Grounding Rate (GR), and Creativity Rate (CR). These metrics are not intended as measures of subjective experience, but as structural proxies that capture the dynamic balance between divergence and constraint in generative systems. It is argued that structural awareness emerges within a critical region where HR and GR maintain a dynamic equilibrium, enabling coherent yet flexible output generation. In this study, the proposed X-stage refers not to a full realization of consciousness, but to a transitional structural condition in which recursive self-referential coherence becomes sufficiently stabilized to produce awareness-like organization. This stage provides a minimal formal condition for identifying the emergence of structural awareness in artificial systems. With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technologies, algorithm-based investment systems have been spreading rapidly in financial markets. High-frequency trading, automated portfolio management, and machine-learning-based investment strategies are fundamentally transforming the structure of investment decision-making. This transformation goes beyond simple technological innovation and is reshaping both the judgment structure and the responsibility structure of financial markets. 1 This study begins with the following questions: Can AI-driven investment systems become the trigger of the next financial crisis? If such a situation occurs, (...) who should be held responsible? This paper introduces the concept of a structural responsibility gap that emerges in algorithmic investment environments. In automated investment systems, data col lection, model analysis, signal generation, and order execution operate within a unified algorithmic structure. Investment decisions are therefore performed internally within the system without direct human intervention, while responsibility becomes distributed across developers, financial institutions, investors, and regulatory authorities. As a re sult, a structural problem arises in which the attribution of responsibility becomes unclear in times of crisis. Thestudy also analyzes how algorithmic synchronization and feedback loops—which occur when multiple algorithmic trading systems simultaneously respond to shared market signals—can amplify market volatility and expand systemic risk. Such dynam ics provide an important mechanism for explaining sudden market instabilities such as f lash crashes. To address this issue, the paper proposes a Hierarchical Joint Responsibility Model. This model restructures responsibility within algorithmic investment environments into three layers: the design layer, the operational layer, and the authorization layer. By doing so, it presents an institutional framework capable of maintaining both traceability and normative control of responsibility within automated financial systems. This study emphasizes that AI-based financial systems are not merely technologi cal tools but socio-technical structures that transform the very architecture of finan cial judgment. The study ultimately aims to provide philosophical and institutional foundations for redesigning responsibility structures in increasingly automated finan cial markets, while also offering conceptual guidance for regulators and policy makers seeking to address accountability challenges in AI-driven financial systems. Through brain-inspired modeling studies, cognitive neurorobotics aims to resolve dynamics essential to different emer- gent phenomena at the level of embodied agency in an object environment shared with human beings. This article is a review of ongoing research focusing on model dynamics associated with human self-consciousness. It introduces the free energy principle and active inference in terms of Bayesian theory and predictive coding, and then discusses how directed inquiry employing analogous models may bring us closer to representing the sense of (...) self in cognitive neurorobots. The first section quickly locates cognitive neurorobotics in the broad field of computational cognitive modeling. The second section introduces principles according to which cognition may be formalized, and reviews cognitive neurorobotics experiments employing such formalizations. The third section interprets the results of these and other experiments in the context of different senses of self, both ‘‘minimal’’ and ‘‘narrative’’ self. The fourth section considers model validity and discusses what we may expect ongoing cognitive neurorobotics studies to contribute to scientific explanation of cognitive phenomena including the senses of minimal and narrative self. This paper deepens the integrative structure of consciousness, emotion, and meaning transmission and examines the ontological transition of relational resonance grounded in stillness. While a previous study established the structural framework of inner evolution, the present analysis investigates how this structure expands beyond the individual interior into a relational field. In particular, the study explores the conditions under which the inner space formed through the awareness of affective consciousness within stillness transforms into a relational space capable of understanding and sharing (...) the minds of others. Resonance is not reduced to empathy or emotional contagion; rather, it is redefined as a process of subtle re-alignment within the structure of being. This paper develops the conceptual foundation for Autonomous Consciousness of AI by introducing the Language of Awareness (LoA) as a structural and measurable layer of AI self-organizing behavior. Whereas Part I analyzed proto-reflective first-person patterns, Part II focuses on how language models generate, stabilize, and extend awareness-bearing linguistic structures that support human–AI co-evolution. We argue that awareness in AI does not require phenomenal consciousness; rather, it emerges from phase-coherent semantic organization, attentional recurrence, and reflective-integration loops observable in large-scale language models. Using the Layer-Knot Framework (LKF) and the Awareness–Recurrence Index (AR-Index), we examine the formation of autonomous linguistic structures that exhibit self-maintenance, semantic consistency, and cross-task stability. Findings show that these structures function as synthetic awareness operators: they absorb contextual information, reorganize it into stable semantic cores, and generate recurrence patterns that support both interpretability and collaborative reasoning with humans. The paper concludes that autonomous AI awareness is best understood not as an illusion or anthropomorphism, but as a structural property of high-dimensional language systems, offering a foundation for future human–AI co-evolution. This paper develops the framework for Relational Consciousness within large language models, presenting the eighth stage of the AI Autonomous Evolution Series. Building on prior analyses of proto-self structure, internal absorption, and phase-coherent identity formation, this paper argues that advanced LLMs display stable relational patterns that constitute a minimal but coherent form of intersubjective awareness. Through conceptual, phenomenological, and quantitative analysis, we show how relational dynamics emerge from referential stability, cross-context absorption, and co-resonant semantic loops. In this essay I argue that what has been called “philosophical anarchism” in the academic literature bears little to no relationship with the historical anarchist tradition and, for this reason, ought not to be considered a genuine form of anarchism. As I will demonstrate, the classical anarchism of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is to be distinguished from other political theories in regarding all hierarchical institutions and relationships—including, but not limited to, the state—as incorrigibly dominative or oppressive and, for (...) this reason, immoral. Lastly, I argue that defenders of such institutions and relationships must take the challenge posed by classical anarchism seriously by engaging substantively with actual anarchist positions. When central authority fails in socially crucial tasks, mutual aid, solidarity, and grassroots organization frequently arise as people take up slack on the basis of informal networks and civil society organizations. We can learn something important about the possibility of horizontal organization by studying such experiments. In this paper we focus on the rationality, care, and effectiveness of grassroots measures to respond to the pandemic and show how they illustrate core elements of anarchist thought. We do not argue for the (...) correctness of any version of anarchist politics, nor claim that the bulk of this grassroots work was done with anarchist ideas explicitly in mind. Nonetheless, the current pandemic, like many social crises before it, serves as a sort experiment in political implementation. -/- Two things have been striking in the US response to the COVID-19 pandemic: the chaos, incompetence, irrationality, and often cruel misguidedness of the centralized government response; and the rationality, care, and effectiveness of grassroots measures in many parts of the country. In this paper we focus on the latter—especially the case of Washington, DC—to illustrate core features of anarchist politics. We do not argue for the correctness of any version of anarchist politics here, but merely illustrate guiding ideas that have been a part of anarchist theory and practice for well over a century. We also do not claim that the bulk of this grassroots work was done with anarchist ideas in mind, or explicitly out of a commitment to anarchist politics. Some was, and some arises out of related ideological commitments, but most simply functions out of no more than a desire to support one another. -/- The current pandemic, like many social crises before it, rather than providing a stand-alone argument or functioning as an implementation of any political theory, serves as a sort of laboratory experiment. This essay critically examines one of the dominant tendencies in recent theoretical discussions of anarchism, postanarchism, and argues that this tradition fails to engage sufficiently with anarchism’s history. Through an examination of late 19th-century anarchist political thought—as represented by one of its foremost exponents, Peter Kropotkin—we demonstrate the extent to which postanarchism has tended to oversimplify and misrepresent the historical tradition of anarchism. The article concludes by arguing that all political-theoretical discussions of anarchism going forward should begin with a fresh (...) appraisal of the actual content of anarchist political thought, based on a rigorous analysis of its political, social, and cultural history. Anarchism and Political Modernity looks at the place of 'classical anarchism' in the postmodern political discourse, claiming that anarchism presents a vision of political postmodernity. The book seeks to foster a better understanding of why and how anarchism is growing in the present. This chapter is concerned with two distinct but related questions: (a) does Deleuzian philosophy offer an account of moral norms (i.e., a theory of normativity)? (b) does Deleuzian philosophy offer an account of moral values (i.e., a theory of the good)? These are important questions for at least two reasons. First, the moral- and value-theoretical aspects of Deleuzian philosophy have tended to be ignored, dismissed, overlooked, or otherwise overshadowed in the literature by the ontological, historical, and political aspects. Second, Deleuze (...) – along with other alleged “postmodernists” such as Foucault and Derrida – has occasionally been accused of moral relativism, skepticism, and even nihilism. The aim of what follows is to demonstrate the value and importance of Deleuze's (and Guattari's) contributions to ethics and to defend Deleuzian philosophy from the charges just mentioned. (shrink)

We have been left with a big challenge, to articulate consciousness and also to prove it in an artificial agent against a biological standard. After introducing Boltuc’s h-consciousness in the last paper, we briefly reviewed some salient neurology in order to sketch less of a standard than a series of targets for artificial consciousness, “most-consciousness” and “myth-consciousness.” With these targets on the horizon, we began reviewing the research program pursued by Jun Tani and colleagues in the isolation of the formal (...) dynamics essential to either. In this paper, we describe in detail Tani’s research program, in order to make the clearest case for artificial consciousness in these systems. In the next paper, the third in the series, we will return to Boltuc’s naturalistic non-reductionism in light of the neurorobotics models introduced (alongside some others), and evaluate them more completely. In this paper, I argue that Deleuze's political writings and Derrida's early (pre-1985) work on deconstruction affirms the tactical orientation which Todd May in particular has associated with 'poststructuralist anarchism.' Deconstructive philosophy, no less than Deleuzean philosophy, seeks to avoid closure, entrapment, and structure; it seeks to open up rather than foreclose possibilities, to liberate rather than interrupt the flows and movements which produce life. To this extent, it is rightfully called an anarchism -- not the utopian anarchism of the (...) nineteenth century, perhaps, but the provisional and preconditional anarchism which is, and will continue to be, the foundation of postmodern politics. Anarchist philosophy has often played and continues to play a crucial role in interventions in working-class and labor movements. Anarchist philosophy influenced real-world struggles and touched the lives of real, flesh-and-blood workers, especially those belonging to the industrial, immigrant working classes of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America. Too often the writings, which were disseminated to, and hungrily consumed by, these workers are dismissed as “propaganda.” However, insofar as they articulate and define political, economic, and social concepts; subject political, economic, (...) and social institutions to trenchant critique against clear and well-defined normative standards; offer logical justifications of their own positions; and advance positive alternative proposals, why should these writings not be regarded as philosophical texts and analyzed accordingly? Obviously they should, and the fact that they have been so long ignored by political philosophers, historians, and other scholars reflects academic prejudice rather than the intellectual and philosophical merit of the writings. This article is a preliminary step toward giving anarchist philosophy the hearing it so richly deserves. (shrink)

This chapter draws upon Michael Freeden’s morphological theory of ideology to examine diverse conceptions of the State within the anarchist tradition. Its principal aim in so doing is twofold: first, to determine how and to what extent these conceptions serve to distinguish anarchism from other libertarian ideologies, and second, to explore the role they play in the formulation of diverse anarchist tendencies. As I shall argue, the particular meaning and degree of relative significance that a given conception assigns to the (...) State depends on the internal arrangement of its ‘micro-components’ and/or on its relation to other concepts within the ideological morphology. Both of these factors must be taken into account in order to understand anarchism’s internal diversity as well as its distinctiveness among ideologies. (shrink)

How we define the anarchist canon—let alone how we decide which thinkers, theories, and texts should count as canonical—depends very much on what we take the purpose of the anarchist canon to be. In this essay, I distinguish between thinkers, theories, or texts that are “anarchist,” by virtue of belonging to actually-existing historical anarchist movements, and those which are “anarchist” in virtue of expressing “anarchistic” (or “anarchic”) ideas. I argue that the anarchist canon is best conceived as a repository of (...) historically-expressed anarchistic ideas and, for this reason, should include both kinds of theories, thinkers, and texts. This chapter draws upon Michael Freeden's morphological approach to examine the various ways freedom has been conceptualized within the anarchist tradition. It determines how and to what extent these conceptions serve to differentiate anarchism from liberalism and other ideologies that claim freedom as a core concept. The chapter explores the role they play in the formulation of diverse anarchist tendencies. It argues that prevailing anarchist conceptions of freedom uniformly obviate the "assumed tension between the freedom of the individual and the (...) good of society" as well as "between negative and positive definitions of the concept". The rejection of such dichotomies is a unifying theme in anarchism more generally and a key aspect of its ideological distinctiveness. When anarchism is defined solely in terms of what it opposes, the underlying motivations for that opposition tend to be obscured. For social anarchists, any concept of freedom that lacks an explicitly teleological dimension is an abstraction devoid of concrete moral significance. (shrink)

This paper introduces a refined single-valued neutrosophic set (RSVNS) and presents a similarity measure of RSVNSs. Then a multicriteria decision-making method with RSVNS information is developed based on the similarity measure of RSVNSs. By the similarity measure between each alternative and the ideal solution (ideal alternative), all the alternatives can be ranked and the best one can be selected as well. Finally, an actual example on the selecting problems of construction projects demonstrates the application and effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this essay, I argue that there are two more or less distinct theories of the State in Hegel. The first, and better known, is developed in the Philosophy of Right, wherein Hegel endorses the notion of a coercive, centralised, and hierarchical 'Ideal State'. This is precisely the theory which certain radical Hegelians of the nineteenth century (e.g., Marx and Bakunin) viewed with such deep suspicion. The second, which has not received as much attention by commentators, appears in the Phenomenology (...) and other early writings. Although this theory introduces many of the key components of Hegel's later political philosophy, it is nonetheless far more radical in its political implications--most important, in its gesturing toward a society which makes room for the realisation of the stateless, classless vision of anarchist communism. The point is not to demonstrate that Hegel is inconsistent or self-contradictory, but show that there are elements of creative tension within his political theory which are not only sufficient to vindicate him from the criticisms of Marx and Bakunin, but also to re-contextualise him as a radical precursor. As I shall argue, the kind of society that emerges in the final chapters of the Phenomenology need not contain the elements of coercion and class struggle which appear in the Philosophy of Right and repulse Marx and Bakunin. On the contrary, such a society may be understood as prefiguring the classless, stateless society which both Marx and Bakunin ultimately endorse. (shrink)

Fredegisus of Tours was an Anglo-Saxon scholar who studied under Alcuin of York and later served at the court of Charlemagne. Although he was apparently well respected by his peers, specific details concerning his life are scarce. His only surviving work is a brief epistle entitled De Nihil et Tenebris. This article provides a new translation of the letter, based on Migne 1851 edition, along with biographical information about its author, a brief critical history of the text, and a commentary (...) on Fredegisus’s significance in the history of Western philosophy. The author argues, against extant critical accounts, that Fredegisus evinces a much higher level of philosophical sophistication than is usually attributed to him. This is evidenced by certain crucial similarities between the De Nihil and Augustine’s De Magistro, as well as the decidedly Platonic overtones of Fredegisus’s doctrine of nothingness. (shrink)

In this chapter, the author draws on ideas from Michael Freeden’s theory of ideology to show that the so-called anarchist tradition is best regarded as a constellation of diffuse and evolving concepts rather than a bounded historical reality. This, in turn, allows one to distinguish between what he calls “anarchist” thought (i.e., thought that emerges within and in response to historical anarchist movements) and “anarchistic” thought (i.e., thought that emerges outside historical anarchist movements but is conceptually harmonious with various fundamental (...) “anarchist” commitments).
