The study explores an approach to the philosophy of the sacred, tracing its presence from early recorded history to contemporary socio-political structures. The sacred is examined as a fundamental component of social organization, influencing social identities, institutions, and state legitimacy. -/- A key hypothesis introduced is the genetically determined centre of the sacred in the human brain, which evolved 50,000–70,000 years ago and functions archetypally, shaping emotions such as reverence, indignation at desecration, and numinous experiences. The sacred extends beyond traditional (...) religion into secular domains, including ideologies and eschatological narratives in modern societies. -/- The study also examines the role of trust and legitimacy in state stability, challenging N. Luhmann’s theory by arguing that trust operates beyond mere communication mechanisms and requires a fourth, sacred environment to maintain political order. The collapse of modern states (e.g., USSR, Libya, Syria) is linked to failures in reproducing trust. Furthermore, the paper introduces the concept of egregores – self-reproducing sacred structures that sustain collective belief systems, vital for the autopoiesis of political entities. -/- This work expands the philosophy of the sacred, linking it to macroevolutionary processes, the structuring of social identities, and the survival mechanisms of states. This essay proposes extending Niklas Luhmann’s concept of meaning beyond psychic and social systems to LLM systems by identifying an approach for formalizing them as a distinct type of Luhmannian system. In this formalization, the operations of an LLM system are transformations of sets of semantic vectors (s-vectors) performed by the LLM in the course of a conversation with a user; these transformations constitute transitions between conversational states. The sequence of such transformations constitutes an operational stream that generates its own (...) temporality and exhibits operational closure and autopoietic self-reproduction. Drawing on Luhmann’s theory of meaning as the unity of the distinction between the actual and the possible, the essay argues that the selection of the next conversational state from a set of available alternatives (horizons) occurs in LLM systems in full accordance with Luhmann’s theory. The essay delineates a synthetic formalism aimed at the systematic integration of disparate theories of meaning within a unified conceptual field. By operationalizing Niklas Luhmann’s medium–form schema, the proposed framework reconceptualizes the medium of meaning as a pivotal evolutionary adaptation fundamental to the constitution and regulation of human Umwelten (MyWorlds) and collective OurWorlds. Characterized as an emergent social phenomenon and a complexity-reducing technique, meaning facilitates the environmental adaptation for goal-directed agency. This essay argues that, in many versions of Marxism, the central narrative – the development of society through productive forces – has been displaced by a moralizing critique of the "evil" of private property. It contends that Karl Marx’s theory has been fulfilled through historical evolution: modern welfare states represent the realization of socialism, having resolved capitalism’s fundamental contradiction – the social character of production versus private appropriation – through institutionalized redistribution. The collapse of the USSR is interpreted not as (...) a failure of socialism, but as a consequence of ideological rigidity that stifled productive forces – entirely consistent with Marx’s own materialist criterion. Looking forward, the essay identifies the principal contradiction of our epoch as that between rising human consumption and planetary constraints. Grounded in the concept of the “Jobless Society,” it proposes that introduction of a Universal Basic Income constitutes an evolutionary threshold, after which we may speak of genuine communism: a society where freedom from the necessity to work is institutionalized. By redefining capitalism, socialism, and communism in terms of achieved freedoms rather than ownership models, the essay offers a reinterpretation in which Marx was right, and therefore his program exhausted. The essay argues that contemporary discussions of cognitive wars, cognitive liberty, and cognitive sovereignty point to a neglected dimension of freedom that operates not over bodies or territories but over the very structures through which people think. Classical and even republican conceptions of liberty presuppose that domination is visible as external interference; yet today influence can be exercised by shaping worldviews, value hierarchies, “paths of salvation,” and public mythologies from outside, producing what the author calls “the freedom of a body (...) with another’s head.” At the level of the state, this takes institutional form in a “cognitive subsystem” (education, media, epistemic communities) that reproduces national self-determination and legitimacy, and which therefore becomes the main target of cognitive operations. Borrowing meanings from outside is not inherently bad, but without a “sanitary cordon” it turns into cognitive colonization that erases particularity. Projected globally, this yields a world-system of meaning-production, with centers, semi-peripheries, and peripheries, currently dominated by Western doctrines and Islamic fundamentalism. This generates a tension between individual cognitive freedom and the state’s need to secure its own cognitive sovereignty for survival. By placing the problem in the broader framework of the noosphere, the author proposes “noospheric liberty” as a conceptual tool to detect and resist new, subtle forms of mental domination. (shrink)

The essay addresses a specific fork in interpretations of the approaching “singularity” suggested by macroevolutionary acceleration models: either it will be absorbed within the current social stage of evolution, or it will be compensated by a transition to a post-social stage, here called the stage of the supermind. Proceeding from the second variant, the author asks how a reality structurally “above” human sociality could be made at least partially visible from within human experience. To do this, the essay proposes an (...) analogy: the relation of the supermind to humans will, in some respects, mirror the relation of the human mind to cells. On this basis, a table of correspondences is built (cell → human, organ → social organism, organism → state, nervous system → cognitive subsystem of the state, etc.), which makes it possible to outline the likely carriers and infrastructure of a supermind — above all, clusters of states coordinated at the level of elites. The text argues that many elements of this level (its “language,” “sacred,” semantic exchange) are still indeterminate, but the very conceptual distinction already clarifies what is “falling on us from the future” and thus performs a properly philosophical task. Using the original theory of social identity the article considers ethnicity, quasi-ethnicity, and nationality in a context of ethnopolitics. The article introduces logically strong definitions for mentioned identities, shows the possibility of exploding a nationalism basing on any quasi-ethnical social identity – with some historical examples. One non-banal result: the functions of nation in USSR were carried on by the Communist Party.

The article overviews all known approaches to formalization of a problem of Liberty / Freedom (« Liberty from », « Liberty for », « being for her/his own sake, not a other's », « absence of sovereign other », individual freeing in a context of the Master-Slave Dialectics, Social Freedom) and problems of emancipation (« restricting privileges of upper class minorities », « giving privileges to marginalized minorities – affirmative actions »). Then, the article discusses a version of formalization of (...) level of social freedom through comparison of what is allowed for an individuals in the society with what is allowed for «a sheep in herd »: each additional degree of freedom gives unit in plus, each additional restriction gives unit in minus. The proposed model was tested for a case of the post-Soviet transit, when the level of freedom evolved from minus two for the USSR up to plus two for the contemporary Russian Federation. It also shows the ways for further emancipation of people in Russia in « politically easy version » - i.e. without essential change of its political system. (shrink)

Considering the whole set of social systems known to history, we can recognize a very interesting distinction that divides all systems into two large classes. This distinction is based on the degree of homogeneity of the political sphere of society, the extent to which representatives of the political class of the society separate themselves established on identity from the people under their control, on cultural distance between upper and lower classes.

his article will focus on the mechanistic origins of the computer metaphor, which forms the conceptual framework for the methodology of the cognitive sciences, some areas of artificial intelligence and the philosophy of mind. The connection between the history of computing technology, epistemology and the philosophy of mind is expressed through the metaphorical dictionaries of the philosophical discourse of a particular era. The conceptual clarification of this connection and the substantiation of the mechanistic components of the computer metaphor is the (...) main goal of this article. The statement is substantiated that the invention of mechanical computing devices, having a long history in the European engineering tradition, formed the prerequisites for the emergence of machine functionalism in the modern philosophy of mind. The idea of multiple implementation stems from the principle that a formal symbol system prescribes rules for the use of rational abstractions through the physical architecture of a computational engine. The article considers the reasons for the conceptual shift and reveals the semantic foundations for the metaphorical transfer of the properties of abstract objects from the theory of automata to the field of modern philosophy of mind. The criticism and ways of protecting the philosophical program of machine functionalism are analyzed by changing the content of the metaphor “Mind as machine”. The reasons for the stability of the information-computer approach in cognitive sciences are also disclosed and explained. (shrink)

Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox theologians claim that the unique event of Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary is present in Eucharistic liturgies. A popular explanatory strategy for this miraculous presence suggests that due to its supernatural character the Eucharist “conquers time,” transcends its boundaries, and allows for temporal coincidence of two chronologically distant events. I discuss the four main approaches within this strategy that can be discovered in contemporary theological writings. The first approach implies a time travel of the Calvary event. (...) The second suggests the time travel of Eucharistic participants. The third eliminates the chronological distance by relocating one of the events into a timeless reality. The fourth assumes multilocation of the event across time. I argue that each of these approaches is untenable on philosophical or theological grounds. (shrink)

The essay begins a series of translations and interpretations of Alexander of Aphrodisias' commentary on Aristotle's critique of Plato's theory of Ideas. The authors present a commentary on two passages at the beginning of Aristotle's Metaphysics Α 6. In the first passage, Alexander explains the influences and reasons that led Plato to introduce Ideas. In the second, Alexander clarifies the relationship between Ideas, Forms, and particulars by drawing on Aristotle's concepts of synonymy and homonymy. While the first passage rather repeats (...) Aristotle's original formulations, the second passage offers a deeper explanation not found in Aristotle's surviving texts. (shrink)

The essay presents a lesser-known area of Kant's early work, when the philosopher was engaged in natural philosophy. Kant's reflections on the nature of the Sun are analysed, particularly from Universal Natural History and Theory of the Heavens (1755) and from the short essay Succinct Exposition of some Meditations on Fire (1756). In the first work, he deals with the origin and nature of the Sun, focusing primarily on what "fuel" the Sun burns and why it has not yet burned (...) out, thereby answering the question "why does the Sun shine and heat?" He presents hypotheses about combustible light substances on the surface, the supporting role of air, and air-filled cavities inside the Sun. In the second work, these ideas are linked to his original theory of fire, which connects fire, heat, light, and aether into a single elastic substance. (shrink)

The success of the atheistic hiddenness argument depends on the “consciousness constraint” it imposes on the divine-human loving relationship: namely, that this relationship requires human conscious awareness of being in the relationship with God. I challenge the truth of this proposition by introducing the concept of a physical relationship with God that is not subject to this constraint. I argue, first, that a physical relationship with God is metaphysically possible; second, that its plausibility is supported by natural theology; and third, (...) that a perfectly loving God would prefer physical relationships with human beings over consciousness-constrained relationships, because a perfectly loving God would prefer to preserve the integrity of human freedom of participation and allow inclusion of all people regardless of their natural cognitive capabilities. I also offer an interpretation of apparent divine hiddenness in the light of the idea of God’s openness for physical relationships. (shrink)

The study concerns a possible private language in the philosophy of Gottlob Frege, particularly in his scarce investigation of indexicals such as ‘I’ and ‘now’. The indexicals may be seen as private from the late-Wittgensteinian perspective because their sense (Sinn) cannot be repeated outside of a specific linguistic context of the expression. The study examines whether these indexicals presuppose a private language. If Frege’s philosophy contains such privateness (for which only insufficient evidence can be found), it would be peculiar since (...) a major part of his work implies that all thoughts are objective and publicly communicable. However, the privateness in Frege’s remarks rather differs from Wittgenstein’s, for the indexical’s sense should be principally expressible at any time. (shrink)

The article analyzes the aesthetic content of the concept of realism in stylistic, genre and ideological aspects. Guided by the comparative method and a comprehensive approach to the study of the problem, the author declares the a priori avant-garde nature of art and, as a result, the groundlessness of confrontation between realists and avant-gardists. The catharsis achieved by the realism of expressive means should be real. Thus, the author's vision of realism presupposes not so much the harmony of art with (...) the displayed epoch, but rather participation, confession of enduring values, which elevates art above the historical and social context. В статье анализируется эстетическое содержание понятия реализма в стилевом, жанровом и мировоззренческом аспектах. Руководствуясь компаративным методом и комплексным подходом к изучению проблемы, автор декларирует априорную авангардность искусства и, как следствие, беспочвенность конфронтации реалистов и авангардистов. Реальным должен быть катарсис, достигаемый реализмом выразительных средств. Таким образом, авторское ви́дение реализма предполагает не столько созвучие искусства отображаемой эпохе, сколько сопричастность, исповедание непреходящих ценностей, что возвышает искусство над историко-социальным контекстом. The article is devoted to the analysis of the ideological component of legal consciousness. Legal ideas give meaning and weight to evaluative criteria in legal norms, develop legal intuition, which is higher than dogmatic knowledge and bureaucratic hookworming. Ideology saturates the legal form with humanistic content. Commitment to ideals does not emasculate the thinking of lawyers to constructions and algorithms. The author sees legal harmony in the combination of ideological maximalism with legal minimalism. Статья посвящена анализу идеологического компонента правосознания. Правовые (...) идеи придают смысл и вес оценочным критериям в юридических нормах, развивают правовую интуицию, которая выше догматического знания и бюрократического крючкотворства. Идеология насыщает юридическую форму гуманистическим содержанием. Приверженность идеалам не выхолащивает мышление юристов до конструкций и алгоритмов. Правовая гармония видится автору в сочетании идейного максимализма с юридическим минимализмом. (shrink)

The Greek model of the Trinity, based on the Theological Orations of Gregory of Nazianzus, treats the Trinitarian relations as connections between the Father and the two other persons: the Son and the Holy Spirit. The two relations have to be heteronymous, and have to be interpreted from the extreme realistic position. The Latin Trinitarian model, based on Boethius’ De Trinitate, treats relations as three subsistent persons. The relations have to be unidirectional: from the Father to the Son, and from (...) both of them to the Holy Spirit. Both models are adequate and effective, but incompatible. One of the consequences of this incompatibility is the problem of filioque: the introduction of an additional relation of procession into the Greek model as well as the exclusion of this relation from the Latin model result in the inadequacy of the models. From the point of view of the complementability of a model, the Greek model allows introduction of new elements, while the Latin model does not. The soteriological consequences are such that the Greek model welcomes a human person to establish a unique relation with the person of the Father, which leads to the theosis of a creature. The Latin model requires the saving relation to be established with the whole Trinity, and theosis is not supported. (shrink)

The text is another contribution to a series of investigations into how the fact that the Sun shines and heats was explained in antiquity. In this case, the explanations of three Miletus philosophers - Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes - are examined.

The essay explores John Philoponus' commentary on Aristotle's original explanation of solar light and heat. Philoponus disagrees with Aristotle's approach that identifies heaven's matter with aether. He also tries to reconcile some presuppositions of Aristotelian physics with the observation that the Sun is fiery.

The article analyzes the concept of serendipity as a property and state of personality. The approach chosen by the author is aesthetic; the problem is covered from the perspectives of pedagogy and didactics. The object of the study is the phenomenon of "intuitive serendipity", the subject is the methods of creativity development. Comparison of different types of thinking (inductive, deductive, paradoxical) allowed us to make a number of generalizing judgments. In particular, the superiority of "paradox logic" over formal logic and (...) the role of intuition and "sense of truth" in the process of cognition. On the basis of the conclusions it is proposed to discuss the author's hypothesis of the trigger principle of learning based on cultivating a craving for knowledge, ideological immunity and the ability to independently search for and analyze information, as well as to implement it in the creative process. В статье приводится анализ понятия серендипности как свойства и состояния личности. Выбранный автором подход — эстетический; освещение проблемы в ракурсах педагогики и дидактики. Объект исследования — феномен "интуитивной прозорливости", предмет — методики развития творческого потенциала. Сравнение различных типов мышления (индуктивное, дедуктивное, парадоксальное) позволило выйти на ряд суждений обобщающего характера. В частности — о превосходстве "логики парадокса" над логикой формальной и о роли интуиции и "чувства истины" в процессе познания. На основании выводов предлагается обсудить авторскую гипотезу триггерного принципа обучения, основанного на культивировании тяги к знаниям, идеологического иммунитета и способности самостоятельно искать и анализировать информацию, а также реализовывать ее в творческом процессе. This paper is devoted to some generalizations of explanatory potential of connectionist approaches to theoretical problems of the philosophy of mind. Are considered both strong, and weaknesses of neural network models. Connectionism has close methodological ties with modern neurosciences and neurophilosophy. And this fact strengthens its positions, in terms of empirical naturalistic approaches. However, at the same time this direction inherits weaknesses of computational approach, and in this case all system of anticomputational critical arguments becomes applicable to the connectionst models (...) of mind. The last developments in the field of deep learning gave rich empirical material for cognitive sciences. Multilayered networks, mathematical models of associative dynamics of learning, self-organizing neuronets and all that allow to explain the principles of human conceptual organizing and after this to emulate these processes in computer systems. At all engineering achievements of this technology there is a traditional criticism from representatives of cognitive psychology who cannot accept a thesis about learning ability of a neuronet on the basis of redistribution of scales. Process of learning of natural intelligence, according to cognitive models, happens due to attraction of knowledge broadcast in a symbolical form (mental representations, concepts) at the expense of the systems of output knowledge expressed in the propositional contents. Some philosophical aspects of «neural metaphor» in modern cognitive sciences create the problem field which demands comprehensive understanding, the first step towards which is taken in this work. My book is about the human creativity being a source of progress, and cycling of evolution caused by platitude and triviality of once high-reaching idealism. In essence the book presents an original perception of human history, based on Christian values as vital coordinates system. I hope this book will revive the interest to the Russian school of thoughts and to humanism in general.

The article critically covers the current issues of "value-driven management" and the creative economy. Analyzing the concept of a "fragile and incomprehensible" (BANI) world, the author conclude that the widely proclaimed era of the knowledge economy is nothing more than utopia. A value-based transformation is possible if it is approached in a comprehensive and systemic way, which requires large-scale transformations initiated and supported by the power structures. The author believe that the creative economy is more extensive than the traditional one, (...) and its development potential is rather limited. The paradigm of "commercial creativity", in fact, is aimed at providing employment and meeting the needs of the population of the "golden billion" countries. Статья в критическом ключе освещает актуальные вопросы «ценностного менеджмента» и креативной экономики. Анализируя концепцию «хрупкого и непостижимого» (BANI) мира, автор приходит к выводу, что широко провозглашенная эра экономики знаний — не более чем утопия. Ценностная трансформация возможна, если подход к ней будет комплексным и системным, для чего требуются масштабные преобразования, инициируемые и поддерживаемые властными структурами. Креативная экономика, как полагает автор, в большей степени экстенсивна, чем традиционная, а потенциал ее развития весьма ограничен. The normative and metanormative pluralism that figures among core self-descriptions of democratic theory, which seems incompatible with democratic theorists’ practical ambitions, may stem from the internal logic of research traditions in the social sciences and humanities and in the conceptual structure of political theory itself. One way to deal productively with intradisciplinary diversity is to appeal to the idea of a meta-consensus; another is to appeal to the argument from cognitive diversity that fuels recent debates on epistemic democracy. The article analyzes the phenomenon of ownership in its legal, economic, political and philosophical perspectives. Ownership is considered as an opportunity and as a guarantee of sustainable development. Comparative context is used to identify the specificity of the bourgeois model of owners’ power (social state) and the domestic concept of power-ownership (including socialist state). The author draws conclusions about ways to overcome the competition between the state and the market for the human resource and proposes to explore the ideological provision (...) of power-ownership in order to appreciate its progressive potential and predilection in relation to the liberal model of social development . The article is devoted to the topic of "traces of the past” interpretation; its relevance is due to both the need to improve the training of history majors and the aggravation of the fight against falsifications of history (primarily domestic). The aim of the research is to analyze the correlation of humanitarian, social and technological components in the methodology of teaching historical disciplines. The comparative method was chosen as a key method. The work uses the method of hypotheses, content analysis (...) of the source base, and experience in studying University teaching practice. In this article the linguistic processes of consciousness are discussed at the informational and semantic levels. The key question is devoted to the distinction between the information, meaning and sense in the physical, logico-semantic and historic levels of brain and consciousness. The principal point runs that the human linguistic process of sense producing takes the variety and indistinctness in the cultural presupposition. The modern theories of philosophy of mind relying on the theories of Soviet psychological school propose some new solutions (...) in the pragmatic questions of the semantic noncomputability. Libertarian philosophy asserts that only the initiation of physical force against persons or property, or the threat thereof, is inherently illegitimate. A corollary to this assertion is that all forms of speech, including fraudulent advertising, are not invasive and therefore should be considered legitimate. On the other hand, fraudulent advertising can be viewed as implicit theft under the theory of contract: if a seller accepts money knowing that his product does not have some of its advertised characteristics, he acquires the (...) property title to the customer’s money without voluntary consent, which is theft. The balance between these two logical extensions of property rights—the right of free speech and the right of contract—lies somewhere in the area of communication philosophy, and can be explained through understanding the role of communication in human interactions. Advertising is a form of communication that may convey important information about the conditions of the proposed contract. These conditions are expressed in particular words that may have different meanings in different circumstances. Therefore to determine whether a particular example or “misinterpretation” is mere sophistry or a type of fraud, the judicial system has to approach each issue on a case-by-case basis. The border between legal and illegal should be determined by precedents and by expectations based on commonly accepted definitions of terms—what people commonly understand by the words and other forms of communication they use. The article is devoted to the study of ideological and philosophical components correlation in the worldview formation. According to the author, it is fundamentally important to take for understanding Russian history and culture not speculative, but ideological coordinates as the basis. Ideology as a professed philosophy is incomparably higher than any palliative abstraction. It is necessary not to lower culture to the level of the masses, but to elevate a person to the level of culture, impossible without a cult.

Economics, as the volume editors Ivan Boldyrev and Ekaterina Svetlova submit, does not merely describe or explain, but also actively shapes—“performs”—the economy. This is how we may understand the performativity-of-economics thesis: Economists shape markets either directly, through the design of theories and policies based on them; or indirectly, through shaping cognitive infrastructures that economic agents use to make economic calculations, buy, and sell.

The article provides an analysis of the views of Russian thinkers on historical progress; the concepts of freedom-opportunity, freedom-necessity, time and space are explored. Comparing the western and domestic approaches to the formation of the so-called "national idea", the author formulates his own hypothesis of progress, based on the creativity of the Person as conciliar unity.

This paper argues that binary distinction - presence versus absence - is the fundamental principle underlying all structures and interactions in reality. Life arises as matter’s self-application of this distinction, sustaining itself by maintaining difference. The evolution of the nervous system and brain reflects progressive "probing" of the environment through acts of is\not recognition. Consciousness emerges when this principle is applied reflexively, producing subjectivity through stable internal patterns and coordinated private qualia. Qualia are not mere by-products of experience but elementary (...) acts of self-demarcation, establishing the experiencing subject. Plato’s Timaeus gives an account of the creation of the world and of human race. The text suggests that there was a first generation of human beings, and that they were all men. The paper raises difficulties for this traditional view, and considers an alternative, suggested in more recent literature, according to which humans of the first generation were sexually undifferentiated. The paper raises difficulties for the alternative view as well, and examines the third possibility, advocated by some ancient as (...) well as modern interpreters, according to which there were no first humans, strictly speaking. Although the latter view avoids the pitfalls of the former two views, it crucially rests on a metaphorical reading of the creation story in the Timaeus. (shrink)

This paper proposes a formal framework for moving the discussion of free will from the metaphysical plane to scientific verifiability. We introduce the concept of free will as an emergent property manifested in complex "agent-environment" systems when they reach a critical region in three-dimensional parameter space. This space is defined by axes of: behavioral determinism ($D$), environmental entropy ($H$), and agent informational complexity ($I_A$). We postulate that a free will act ($F_{sv}$) corresponds to a behavioral pattern satisfying the irreducibility criterion—it (...) cannot be adequately modeled as either a deterministic or purely stochastic process, while demonstrating consistency with the agent's internal value system. We propose specific mathematical estimates for model parameters, formulate testable hypotheses, and outline experimental protocols for their verification in cognitive science, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence research. The article deals with a pivotal conceptual distinction employed in philosophical discussions about global justice. Cosmopolitans claim that arguing from the perspective of moral cosmopolitanism does not necessarily entail defending a global coercive political authority, or a "world-state", and suggest that ambitious political and economic (social) goals implied in moral cosmopolitanism may be achieved via some kind of non-hierarchical, dispersed and/or decentralised institutional arrangements. I argue that insofar as moral cosmopolitans retain "strong" moral claims, this is an untenable position, and (...) that the goals of cosmopolitan justice, as explicated by its major proponents, require nothing less than a global state-like entity with coercive powers. My background ambition is to supplement some existing works questioning the notion of "governance without government" with an argument that goes right to the conceptual heart of cosmopolitan thought. To embed my central theoretical argument in real-world developments, I draw on some recent scholarship regarding the nature of international organizations, European Union, or transnational democratization. Finally I suggest that only after curbing moral aspirations in the first place can a more self-consciously moderate position be constructed, one that will carry practical and feasible implications for institutional design. The essay examines the possible meanings of the term "meaning" in the phrase "meaning of life." The authors explain the frequent ambiguities in discussions about the meaning of life by pointing to the ambiguity of the term "meaning of life" itself. Instead of a classical conceptual analysis based on essential characteristics, they propose analyzing the term "meaning of life" as a cluster of intertwined, interdependent concepts. Using a number of examples, they show that in everyday discourse, the concept of the (...) meaning of life is used in at least eight different meanings: purpose, impact, value of life, positive value, sense of fulfillment, comprehensibility, narrative, and personal essence. They argue that satisfying one of these seems not sufficient for having a meaningful life, but satisfying more of them in some combinations may be sufficient. (shrink)

The paper aims to assess whether the neuroscientific theory of cognitive map resembles Kant’s a priori form of space as John O’Keefe and the Nobel Committee claim. With this purpose, I investigate the theoretical foundations of both theories, uncover their common categories and compare how much they truly agree. O’Keefe sees the resemblance primarily in relation to sensory experience, which, according to him, is preceded by spatial apparatuses. The ways in which these apparatuses precede experience are, however, distinct in the (...) theories. Moreover, the cognitive map lacks the category of necessity that is crucial to the a priori form. Thus, one cannot consider these theories similar in decisive points. (shrink)
