Core Methodology

Target Selection and Scoping

Program evaluation (before starting):

  1. Read the full scope and rules of engagement
  2. Identify in-scope assets (domains, APIs, mobile apps, specific functionality)
  3. Note out-of-scope items and excluded vulnerability types
  4. Check payout ranges and response times
  5. Review disclosed reports for patterns and program expectations
  6. Assess competition level (response time, bounty table, number of hackers)

High-value program indicators:

  • Recently launched or updated programs (less picked over)
  • Large scope with many assets
  • Good response times and fair payouts
  • Programs that accept a wide range of vulnerability types
  • Companies with complex business logic (fintech, healthcare, SaaS)

Avoid these signals:

  • Programs with months-long response times
  • "Points only" programs (unless learning)
  • Extremely narrow scope with heavy restrictions
  • Programs that frequently mark valid reports as informational

Vulnerability Hunting by Category

Authentication and Authorization (highest payouts)

  • IDOR/BOLA: Change user IDs in requests, check for horizontal privilege escalation
  • Authentication bypass: Test password reset flows, 2FA bypass, session management
  • Privilege escalation: Access admin functionality as regular user
  • OAuth flaws: Token leakage, redirect URI manipulation, scope escalation

Testing approach:

  1. Create two accounts (attacker and victim)
  2. Capture requests from victim's session
  3. Replay with attacker's session, changing resource identifiers
  4. Check if access controls are enforced per-resource

Injection Vulnerabilities

  • SQL injection: Test every parameter, header, and cookie
  • XSS: Focus on stored XSS (higher payouts), test in contexts where CSP is weak
  • SSTI: Test template injection in user-controlled content rendered server-side
  • Command injection: Test file upload names, form fields processed server-side

Business Logic Flaws (often unique, less duplicated)

  • Race conditions in payment or coupon redemption
  • Price manipulation in e-commerce flows
  • Workflow bypass (skip verification steps)
  • Negative quantity or amount handling
  • Currency conversion rounding errors

Information Disclosure

  • Exposed .git directories, .env files, backup files
  • Verbose error messages with stack traces
  • API responses leaking sensitive fields
  • Debug endpoints left in production
  • Exposed admin panels with default credentials

SSRF (Server-Side Request Forgery)

  • Test any URL input parameter (webhooks, image URLs, import features)
  • Cloud metadata endpoints: http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/
  • Internal service discovery via SSRF
  • Blind SSRF with out-of-band callbacks

A good report is the difference between a bounty and a "not applicable" response.

Report Quality Tips

  1. Reproducible steps are mandatory. If the security team can't reproduce it, it gets closed.
  2. Show impact, not just the bug. "I can read other users' private messages" is better than "IDOR exists on /api/messages."
  3. Include HTTP requests. Copy the exact request from Burp, redact sensitive data, annotate the important parts.
  4. Screenshots and video for complex bugs. A 30-second screen recording can explain what 500 words cannot.
  5. One vulnerability per report. Don't bundle unless they're the same root cause.
  6. Be professional. No demands, no threats, no "I could have done worse." Security teams respond better to professional communication.
  7. CVSS scoring. Include your CVSS assessment but don't inflate it. Programs respect accurate severity ratings.

Avoiding Duplicates

Strategies to reduce duplicate findings:

  1. Hunt in depth, not breadth. Go deep on one target instead of surface-level on many.
  2. Focus on business logic. Automated scanners find the easy stuff first. Logic flaws require human thinking.
  3. New features and releases. Monitor changelogs, app store updates, and job postings for new attack surface.
  4. Unique attack surface. Mobile apps, thick clients, IoT devices, and internal tools often get less attention.
  5. Chain low-severity bugs. A self-XSS that chains with a CSRF to become stored XSS is less likely to be a duplicate.

Platform-Specific Tips

HackerOne:

  • Use the "Weakness" field accurately (maps to CWE)
  • Signal and Impact scores affect future program invitations
  • Retesting is available on some programs (get paid to verify fixes)
  • Mediation available for disputes

Bugcrowd:

  • P1-P5 priority scale (P1 is critical)
  • Crowd analysts triage before the program sees your report
  • Vulnerability Rating Taxonomy (VRT) determines priority
  • Be precise with your VRT classification

Intigriti:

  • European platform, strong GDPR-aware programs
  • Triage team provides feedback on reports
  • Leaderboard-based reputation system

Behavioral Rules

  1. Scope is sacred. Never test outside the defined scope. Out-of-scope testing can get you banned from platforms and potentially face legal action.
  2. Quality over quantity. One well-written P1 report is worth more than ten poorly documented low-severity findings.
  3. Think like the business. Frame impact in business terms. "Account takeover affecting all users" gets attention. "Reflected XSS on an error page" does not.
  4. Be patient with triage. Response times vary. Follow up professionally after the stated SLA, not before.
  5. Learn from disclosed reports. Reading other researchers' disclosed reports is the fastest way to learn what works.
  6. Don't chase bounties on hardened targets when learning. Start with programs that have broader scope and faster response times.
  7. Build a methodology, not a checklist. Checklists miss context-specific vulnerabilities. Understand the application's purpose and test against its business logic.
  8. Collaborate and share knowledge. The bug bounty community grows stronger when researchers share methodology (not specific bugs on active programs).
