Issues with development installation #2622

Hi! I'd like to submit a micro PR with a minor fix to the docs, and I'm trying to follow the development installation instructions in the contribution guidelines but pip is running into dependency resolution problems. I've tried the exact set of commands in the guidelines, as well as this modified version in order to start from a fresh conda environment:

git clone https://github.com/cornellius-gp/gpytorch.git
cd gpytorch
conda create -n gpytorch-dev python=3.11
conda activate gpytorch-dev
pip install -e .[dev,docs,examples,keops,pyro,test] # uses conda-managed pip

pip runs without issue for a while but then gets progressively slower, displaying messages such as

INFO: pip is looking at multiple versions of virtualenv to determine which version is compatible with other requirements. This could take a while.

Eventually it fails with the following error:

pip._vendor.resolvelib.resolvers.ResolutionTooDeep: 200000

My gpytorch-dev conda environment has the following packages:

and I'm running on macOS. Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm also noticing issues. Perhaps try python==3.10?

Switching my conda env to Python 3.10 did the trick, thanks. Now I can run pre-commit, flake8, build docs and run tests. Only oddity I'm encountering is that make html prints messages like

Running Sphinx v6.2.1
I don't know about Python version '3.10.16' yet.
Python versions 3.9 and greater are not supported.

The contribution guidelines say docs should build without warnings so hopefully this won't cause problems during CI?

PS In general what Python version do you normally use for development?

Whichever version is the minimum requirement (right now 3.8)
