Hi @domotiquefacile, thanks for the feedback. This is a tricky question, it depends. First, I never done this TrueNAS in a VM with PCI or device passthrough installation with Proxmox. In my mind, the concern you have to deal with is that If you create such a VM setup I cannot tell, if the passthrough resources (HBA controller and connected disks) will be visible in Proxmox at all (i.e. how I can tell more about my setup:
I would suggest to do some testing anyhow. Try both cases and find out your preference. |

Thanks a lot for your answer ! I am still at the building stage (receiving the HBA soon) so I cannot test right now. If I don't use HBA passthrough, the drives will be managed/monitored by the Proxmox Hypervisor, so smfc will run on the Hypervisor and will have access to all temperatures (CPU, PCH, HDD). If I use HBA passthrough, the drives will be managed in the VM:
And it seems that there is no consensus on HBA passthrough: some say this is must, and some others say this is overdoing things. So I am still not decided. My computer case is also very similar to yours: I have one room for the motherboard (with fans) and one separate room for the HDDs (with other fans). So I have the temperatures in both rooms can be quite different and I have to control the fans accordingly. At the moment, I am leaning toward using HBA passthrough to have all the nice automatic monitoring of HDDs health in TrueNAS/OpenMediaVault. But then it will be a challenge with smfc installed in Proxmox to control the fans in the HDD room... |

The user interface of TrueNAS is really impressive, you can see the status of your storage and you can configure everything on the UI. On the other hand, everything could be also done on Proxmox, manually. The most important thing is there, built-in ZFS support. There is no trivial answer for this, only personal preferences. Good luck for this building exercise. I think it will be really exciting! |

For me I only want the minimum of headaches ;-) What would be the best approach to retrieve the HDDs temperature from the VM to make it available for smfc in Proxmox ? Thanks a lot for your help ! |
I do not see trivial solution for this. After making this passthrough configuration functional, you will see if the HDDs are visible in Proxmox or not. |

Hello,
I have almost the same configuration as you (but with a X12 motherboard + HBA controlled card) and I was planning to use your script to control the fans.
However I am wondering if it makes more sense to install it directly in the Proxmox hypervisor or within the OpenMediaVault/TrueNAS VM ? As I have an HBA controller card, I can pass the whole controller to the VM, so it will have access to smartctl for the hard drives.
And thank you for this very useful script !
