StratOS Linux

Last Update: 2026-02-09 23:01 UTC

StratOS Linux is an Arch-based Linux distribution which uses scripts from Bedrock Linux to include various packages and repositories from other Linux distributions. It provides several desktop variants featuring the GNOME desktop as well as the Hyprland and the Niri Wayland compositors. The project also develops several custom tools, such as StratVIM (a fork of the Neovim text editor), Rockers (a custom package manager wrapper able to fetch and install binary and source packages from other Linux distributions and from Flatpaks), Stratmacs (a custom Emacs configuration), grab (a fetch script), and Maneki-Neko (a Welcome application).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I tried installing it via Boxes but the install failed is all it said. However on the live desktop all went well. It certainly is one of the most unique distros I've ever seen. I think more for developers than anything. The install althought it failled went well with no issues. The dev team certainly are some smart people. Trying out a distro in a vm is not a good way to judge it in my opinion. Unfortunately I don't have another sscrap pc I could test on. I tested on my Dell i7, 16gb ram and gave it 8gb of ram and 128gb of space. My coding abilities are only limited to visual basic so distros that are geared towards coding don't really interest me. I have distro hopped with the best of them in my day and still as you can see like to look at the latest although staying with my favorite distro. I liked the overall layout of the distro and used the Gnome version for testing although I'm not a Gnome fan. It was responsive and felt lightweight. I think it would appeal to a certian type of user. The devs spent a lof time and hard work on this and so deserve a lot of credit. I'm looking for an old pc to use for testing so I could give a better opinion with a real install. VM's are not a good way to judge a distro. Props again to the devs and looking forward to future imprvements.

I installed it in my laptop, using 5 days now. It's a good OS.
Installation was smooth, using GNOME version.
They used Bedrock Linux to combination of Arch and Ubuntu.
I happy with the combination as rock command is used to update and install software from arch/aur/flatpak/apt repository.
They have option to install fedora, gentoo, kali, void etc using the brl fetch command

I am using virtualbox to try it out.

Installer hangs with a password prompt where the user "statos" is pre-selected. It requires a password which is not to be found. Entering anything (or blank) results in me coming at the same screen. Entering "root" instead of user "stratos" prodces a black screen.

The install screen show a nice pixelart, but seems cut off, or this is some art I do not understand.

Documentation is very sparse, at least the installation could be documented somewhere, couldn't it?

So yeah, I liked the art work but wasted one hour.
