[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [6]
The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the
mw-reference-text
class, Parsoid now also adds thereference-text
class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [7]
Problems
- There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [8]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [9][10]
The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a
<span class="mw-cite-backlink">
wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [11]- On multilingual wikis that use the
<translate>
system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [12]

[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [13]
- The new Community Configuration extension is available on Test Wikipedia. This extension allows communities to customize specific features to meet their local needs. Currently only Growth features are configurable, but the extension will support other Community Configuration use cases in the future. [14][15]
- The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [16]
Problems
Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [17]
- Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [18]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [19][20]
- Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. During a test at 11 wikis, the number of citations added more than doubled when Reference Check was shown to people. Reference Check is community configurable. [21]
- Mailing lists will be unavailable for roughly two hours on Tuesday 10:00–12:00 UTC. This is to enable migration to a new server and upgrade its software. [22]

Tech News: 2024-26
[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Editors will notice that there have been some changes to the background color of text in the diff view, and the color of the byte-change numbers, last week. These changes are intended to make text more readable in both light mode and dark mode, and are part of a larger effort to increase accessibility. You can share your comments or questions on the project talkpage. [23]
- The text colors that are used for visited-links, hovered-links, and active-links, were also slightly changed last week to improve their accessibility in both light mode and dark mode. [24]
Problems
- You can copy permanent links to talk page comments by clicking on a comment's timestamp. This feature did not always work when the topic title was very long and the link was used as a wikitext link. This has been fixed. Thanks to Lofhi for submitting the bug. [25]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 June. It will be on all wikis from 27 June (calendar). [26][27]
- Starting 26 June, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link at English Wikipedia, making this feature available for you to use at all wikis. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they were linked to, even if this comment has since been moved elsewhere. You can read more about this feature on Diff or on Mediawiki.org. [28]

Tech News: 2024-27
[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the top-requested community wishes, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in the latest Web team update. [29]
- Logged-in users can now set global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis. [30]
- If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new CSS features and to send less code to all readers. [31][32]
- Wikipedia Admins can customize local wiki configuration options easily using Community Configuration. Community Configuration was created to allow communities to customize how some features work, because each language wiki has unique needs. At the moment, admins can configure Growth features on their home wikis, in order to better recruit and retain new editors. More options will be provided in the coming months. [33]
- Editors interested in language issues that are related to Unicode standards, can now discuss those topics at a new conversation space in MediaWiki.org. The Wikimedia Foundation is now a member of the Unicode Consortium, and the coordination group can collaboratively review the issues discussed and, where appropriate, bring them to the attention of the Unicode Consortium.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Mandailing (
w:btm:
) [34]
Problems
- Editors can once again click on links within the visual editor's citation-preview, thanks to a bug fix by the Editing Team. [35]

Featured pictures in the public domain?
[edit]Hello, Aristeas. I'm curious about how you used cat-a-lot to add images to Category:Featured pictures in the public domain? How did you find the images? According to Petscan, there are still 4812 candidate images that could be in either Category:Featured pictures in the public domain or Category:Featured photographs in the public domain, but I don't know of an easy way to add the images to those categories. — hike395 (talk) 18:22, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- I figured out how to do it with a combination of PagePile and QuickCategories. — hike395 (talk) 18:32, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hello hike395, please be careful! There are several problems. (CCing @W.carter: because she is interested and involved in this area.)
- Many of the images yielded by this Petscan search are no valid Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons, but only on some Wikipedia. I have intentionally not included these images, because the standards for featured pictures on Wikipedias vary widly and some of these pictures featured on some Wikipedia are of very poor quality. The new categories Category:Featured pictures in the public domain and Category:Featured photographs in the public domain are (as most categories about featured pictures) intended only for pictures featured on Wikimedia Commons.
- Some other images are not featured images at all, e.g. this one, but just loosely related to featured pictures. Such images should not be included in the new categories.
- Some other images have been “Picture of the day” on Wikimedia Commons, but were just selected by some guys for that and were never featured pictures, e.g. this one. These images are normally of poor quality and should not be included.
- Many images which are found by simple searches are not public domain, but just contain a PD template for the subject – like this one. This happens when people take a photo of something, want to say that there are no copyright problems for that something and add a PD template, but additionally add a copyright template for their photograph. In this case the photo is naturally not a PD image, and should not be included in the new categories. This is a very severe issues – the photographers would be very angry when we would include their photos in a PD category.
- And maybe there are more problem. Therefore, as I have learned in the last days, it is very difficult to identify valid featured PD images with searches; in the end one must check every single image before including it. Please do not invalidate the new categories by adding images to hastily.
- Best, – Aristeas (talk) 18:44, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hello hike395, please be careful! There are several problems. (CCing @W.carter: because she is interested and involved in this area.)
- Thank you for the warning! I have immediately stopped the QuickCategory batch run. I may have caused some problems --- I will go back and check the edits. — hike395 (talk) 18:49, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Yep hike395, I can only agree with what Aristeas is writing here. Too many traps open up when you do general searches for FPs. Aristeas is doing a huge job at checking and re-checking all these sometimes complicated licenses that FPs can have. Aristeas is a very skilled coder, but even so much of this needs to be checked manually (Which is mostly what I'm trying to help him with). And images in this category should only be Commons FPs, other wikis and projects have to do their own collections. Best, --Cart (talk) 18:53, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- I am just reverting all of my batch edits -- they are most likely incorrect. Sorry for the trouble. — hike395 (talk) 19:19, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- No problem, hike395 – thank you very much for being careful. It’s really a pity that finding valid PD images is so difficult. PetScan is a great tool, but in this case it does too much of a good thing and returns too many false positive matches. There are too many PD templates and far too many related categories (see the countless subcategories of Category:Public domain), and people use PD templates in too many ways (like the totally confusing examples I have cited above in which photographers used a PD template for the subject, but a GFDL and/or CC template for the photograph itself). One would wish for an additional flat PD category which would contain all images which are really plain vanilla PD/CC-Zero/whatever images; then we could combine that category in searches with other criteria and easily find PD images of certain subjects, styles, etc. … But AFAIK such a flat PD category does not exists. Maybe one should propose its creation on the Commons:Village pump page?
- FYI: I have collected the images in the two new PD FP categories in three steps. First I have added all FP images which are contained in some rather reliable PD categories – e.g., Category:CC-Zero, and the news agency categories like Category:PD-Highsmith, Category:PD-Gottlieb, etc. Then I have added all images from the old gallery page, removing misc. entries which are no longer featured pictures because they have been delisted. Finally I have searched the list of valid featured pictures with an advanced search:
incategory:"Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons" insource:/\{\{PD-/ -deepcat:"Featured pictures in the public domain" -insource:/cc-by|GFDL/i
- This search gets all valid FPs, selects the ones which contain some
{{PD-...}}
template, removes the ones which are already included in the new PD FP categories, and excludes the ones which contain an additional CC-BY or GFDL template. This search is not perfect, too, but it yielded only a few false positives. Therefore for such complicated matters an advanced search is suited better than the easy, but too greedy PetScan search. Hope it helps, – Aristeas (talk) 13:15, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
