Joe Whittinghill shared thisReturning to my alma mater, the University of Montana, this month was deeply meaningful for me. To stand on that stage receiving an honorary doctorate of business from the place that helped shape who I am and to address the Class of 2026 was something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. I shared a few simple beliefs that have guided me: have a plan (but know it will change), do the work, treat people well, and lead through service. More than anything, I hope graduates leave with confidence - the confidence to navigate changing career paths, to step into the unknown, and to recognize that how you show up for others ultimately defines your legacy. Grateful for the honor, the experience, and the chance to celebrate such an incredible milestone with future leaders.Nodding Your Head Does Not Row The Boat: My advice to the University of Montana Class of 2026Nodding Your Head Does Not Row The Boat: My advice to the University of Montana Class of 2026Joe Whittinghill

Joe Whittinghill shared thisI’ve been asked what I have been up to since I retired from Microsoft. Rather than share that update, which is the typical being busier than expected, joining boards, teaching, reading a lot, focusing on health and family, and a bunch of fun recreating, I am sharing out a tool. The spark started with Robin Macgillivray, my amazing ICEO Advisor with LHH, and friend. The concept has been super useful to me. I built it out into a model and sharing it in hopes it may be useful for some of you as well.

Joe Whittinghill shared thisToday, I had the opportunity to help kick off Microsoft’s Global Pride Month Celebration with Michael Wallent, Corporate Vice President of Management. We are executive sponsors of Microsoft GLEAM along with Lorraine Bardeen, Corporate Vice President and CTO of Microsoft’s Worldwide Commercial Solution Areas. We spoke about finding work you love and are passionate about, and work that will bring you career success and joy. We suggested that you push yourself to be a continuous learn-it-all to build skills for today and for what you want to do in the future. We also shared, “You belong here. We all belong here. You matter and your joy matters.” Sometimes it is just being visible, being brave, and just being who you are versus who other people want you to be that matters most.

Joe Whittinghill shared thisOur Microsoft Leap program helps accelerate job readiness for careers in technology. It is a skilling program that works. Joining David Campbell and Kathleen Hall on stage at the NFL Player Care Foundation (PCF) sixth career fair last week was nothing short of inspiring – we announced the first-ever NFL Legends cohort, which will help former players develop the skills they can use to play on a new kind of field. It’s our belief that everyone can grow and develop through upskilling and reskilling, that potential is nurtured, not pre-determined, and that anyone can change their mindset and trajectory. Looking forward to what’s to come this spring!Joe Whittinghill shared thisLast week, I shared the stage with Joe Whittinghill and Kathleen Hall at the NFL Player Care Foundation (PCF)’s 6th annual career fair to talk about Microsoft’s culture of learning, our long-standing partnership with the NFL, and Microsoft Leap’s new initiative: the first ever NFL Legends cohort. This spring, we'll kick off an 8-week upskilling journey for former NFL players (Legends) to help them as they transition to a career off the field and into the tech industry. In true OneMicrosoft fashion, many teams contributed to our onsite activation – I'm grateful for my colleagues at Microsoft Surface, Global Talent Acquisition (GTA), and LinkedIn, who helped bring this effort to life for Legends, and my Leap core team: Yolanda, Shelton, Nicole, Sirena, Angi, and Trystan. Lastly, special thanks to the teams at Atrium, who will spearhead the selection of NFL Legends for our upcoming cohort, and NFL PCF for their continued collaboration. If you want to learn more about our work with NFL PCF, please check out our press release here: https://bwnews.pr/3wizrPw

Joe Whittinghill shared thisWe have some pretty amazing colleagues at Microsoft and nothing gives me more energy than connecting with new hires, especially our early in career and MBA talent. Through our Microsoft Aspire program, we provide these early in career and MBA employees an opportunity to build their network, accelerate their growth, and most importantly, learn from each other as they onboard into our organization. Creating a meaningful experience for Aspirers is no easy feat! I am incredibly proud of Chris F. Wells, Valerie Anderson, Jason Gray, and Becky (Nenni) Lowe who continue to innovate and redefine what world class learning experiences mean, as evidenced by this recognition from the Brandon Hall Group.Joe Whittinghill shared thisA reason to celebrate: Microsoft Aspire has won a coveted 2023 Brandon Hall Group Gold Award for Excellence in the “Best Unique or Innovative Learning and Development Program” category for Aspire Pi (social learning)! The Brandon Hall Group Gold Award is one of the most prestigious honors in the learning and development industry, and I’m incredibly proud of our team and partners for this achievement. What an honor and recognition of the collective efforts of Microsoft Aspire team members Jason Gray and Valerie Anderson, with the operational support of event producers from Swift Group and design partner Sublime Media. We know that pi cannot be expressed as a simple fraction. The decimal representation of pi goes on indefinitely without repeating. Such is the Aspire Pi experience for each participant. Aspire Pi is not a lecture or in a classroom setting. Aspire Pi groups engage organically on topics important to their career, role, life and their experience at Microsoft. Our team has created a truly unique and innovative social learning program that is helping to transform the way early career hires at Microsoft learn and develop signature skills that are essential for future leaders. The Microsoft Aspire mission is clear: to empower our diverse and global Aspire community with a platform that fosters continuous learning, personal and professional development, and peer connections. The commitment to nurturing our early career and MBA talent as emerging leaders at #Microsoft remains stronger than ever. #AspireWithUs #MicrosoftAspire #BHGAwards #AspirePi #learninganddevelopment #sociallearning #MicrosoftCommunity #MicrosoftLife

Joe Whittinghill shared thisThe role of the #manager is more important than ever, especially when it comes to onboarding new employees. My Microsoft colleagues, Karen Kocher and Dawn Klinghoffer, have been leading research and implementation around moments that matter when bringing individuals and teams together. Unsurprisingly, our research showed that when starting a new role—whether at a new company or in an internal hire—meeting your manager in person has clear benefits. In fact, employees who met with their manager within the first 90 days, were more likely to seek feedback, be asked for input by their team, build strong relationships with colleagues, feel supported when discussing tough issues with their manager, and get effective coaching and feedback. Management Excellence is at the heart of Microsoft’s culture transformation, and I’m incredibly proud of how we’re leveraging data and insights to better support our managers as they lead hybrid teams.Joe Whittinghill shared thisMentoring usually benefits from working in person. Three implications: 1) The optimal in-person days for a team depends on their share of new hires. Teams with many new hires may want 3 or 4 days per week. Teams with 5+ year veterans may be good with just a couple of days per month. 2) WFH strategy drives hiring. Fully-remote organizations will be best hiring experienced employees who need less mentoring. In-person organizations can benefit from hiring younger employees who value mentoring. 3) Mentoring can happen remotely but it needs deliberate attention. Joe Whittinghill shared thisAt Microsoft, we are committed to an employee centric, data driven approach to #flexible work. Our teams have spent the past year researching when being in-person truly matters for individuals, teams, and organizations. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, we have identified three key moments that have an outsized impact when coming together in person. Karen Kocher and Dawn Klinghoffer talk about these moments in this new WorkLab article.

Joe Whittinghill shared thisAs we recognize #Pride month and the challenges that LGBTQIA+ communities face, I am sharing my story in hopes that it becomes one more piece of shared text that inspires someone else to feel safe and supported to embrace their identity. It’s time that we celebrate the magnificence of who we are, and not who others think we should be.

Joe Whittinghill shared thisThe role of the #manager is one of the most important roles in any company. In 2019, we redefined the role of the manager at Microsoft to deliver success through empowerment and accountability by modeling, coaching, and caring. By embracing this new approach, managers have been key to our success and activators our culture as we embrace the future of work. We are incredibly proud of all the managers at Microsoft who are making a difference in our employees’ lives. To Retain Your Best Employees, Invest in Your Best ManagersTo Retain Your Best Employees, Invest in Your Best Managers

Joe Whittinghill liked thisJoe Whittinghill liked thisTonight, I had the honor of accepting the CIO.com award, on behalf of our entire team, for the work the University of Montana has done through the FUTURE Project and our broader journey with AI. This award belongs to everyone who contributed to the FUTURE Project: examining how AI will change what we teach, how we teach, how we work, and what industry actually needs from graduates in a world shaped by AI. It's been a two-year endeavor. We've talked with over 2,000 people along the way. Students. Faculty. Staff. Industry partners. Community members. The FUTURE Project represents more than technological adaptation. It's about ensuring UM's response to AI aligns with our core mission of whole-person education, ethical leadership, and service to community. We're building a future where technology amplifies human potential rather than replacing it. A few examples of what the FUTURE Project has meant for UM and for Montana: - We launched TRAIL, a space for people to come in with curiosity and find their own ways to use AI in their day to day. - We launched ChatMT.ai across the entire Montana University System, giving every student, faculty, and staff member free access to leading AI models, built and run on our own infrastructure so access stays equitable and sustainable. - We launched the Institute for Human Centered AI, because we believe AI is more than a research question. It's going to impact everyone. Humans. And we need to be at the center of it. Period. Full stop. AI is a powerful extension of human intent. Used well, it should strengthen learning, scholarship, and the communities we serve, not diminish them. That means equipping our students, faculty, and staff not just to use AI, but to create with it, ethically and with discernment. That's the Montana way. AI is a polarizing topic. It heats up both sides of the aisle. What I love about Montana is that we've approached it in a thoughtful, deliberate way, where everyone's voice is heard. Bleeding edge or skeptic, we welcome the conversation. The work is never done. Another TRAIL workshop series is coming. The Montana AI Summit is coming. Year three of the FUTURE Project is kicking off. Like all Montanans do, we hold a seat at the table for our neighbors to share their voice, their concerns, or their excitement. Joe Whittinghill liked thisJoe Whittinghill liked thisEvery breakthrough in AI begins with strong engineering foundations. That's what Microsoft 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐀𝐈 was designed to reinforce. We brought together experienced engineers to solve real-world problems using Microsoft's AI stack, learning through experimentation and collaboration. Seeing nearly 28,000 registrations and hundreds of working prototypes was a powerful reminder of the engineering depth and builder mindset across our developer community. For me, this reinforces an important belief: innovation starts at the core, with strong engineering practices, continuous learning, and a culture that empowers people to build, test, and improve. Congratulations to the winning teams, and thank you to everyone who made Microsoft Build AI possible. I look forward to seeing how these ideas evolve into solutions that create real-world impact! Under the mentorship of Jake Berman and the Personal Injury team, I was able to independently draft demand letters, lead client intake calls, conduct my own legal research, and work with attorneys. Joe Whittinghill liked thisJoe Whittinghill liked thisThe most important thing my team will do this year won’t be any single product or feature we ship: instead, it will be changing how we work. I’ve started treating this evolution of our teams and structures as my main work product as a leader. I wrote about the three things that have mattered most as we’ve changed how we build – and there’s more we’re still figuring out.
