My Agile Journey: Lessons Learned as a Software Engineer As a software engineer, I've had the privilege of working in Agile environments for several years now, and I must say it's been a transformative experience. 🌟 What is Agile Testing and Development? Agile is an iterative and incremental approach to software development that emphasizes flexibility, collaboration, and rapid delivery. It's all about embracing change, delivering working software in short cycles, and continuously improving. My Experience with Agile: In my project, our team adopted Agile methodologies to improve our development process. We started with daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives. It was amazing to see how these practices brought our team closer together and helped us deliver high-quality software faster. One mindset shift Scrum is teaching me: Leadership is not always about giving direction. Sometimes it’s about removing obstacles so others can perform at their best. As I continue learning Scrum Mastery with Africa Agility Foundation, my understanding of leadership is evolving. Before this program, I often associated leadership with directing work: assigning tasks, tracking progress, and making sure things were delivered on time. But Scrum introduces a different perspective. A Scrum Master’s role isn’t to control the team’s work. It’s to enable the team to succeed. That means: • Identifying and removing blockers • Encouraging open communication • Creating an environment where people can collaborate effectively • Helping teams continuously improve their workflow What surprised me the most is how relevant this mindset is beyond tech teams. Even in my work as a Social Media Manager and Content Strategist, I see the connection clearly. Creative teams perform better when: ✨ Collaboration flows easily ✨ Feedback loops are clear ✨ Processes are not slowing people down ✨ Everyone understands the goal of the campaign Whether it’s building a product or executing a content campaign, success often comes from enabling people to do their best work, not simply managing tasks. Still learning, still adjusting my thinking, and appreciating the new perspective this journey is giving me. ​As Scrum Masters, we know the Daily Scrum isn't for us. It's the Developers' meeting—a 15-minute tactical huddle to inspect progress toward the Sprint Goal and adapt the plan for the next 24 hours. ​But too often, it decays into a robotic status report given to the Scrum Master. ​ ​Here are 5 detailed techniques to elevate your Daily Scrum from a status update to a strategic planning session: ​1. 🎯 Start with the Goal, Not the Person ​Instead of "Who wants to start".. ​Technique: Have the Sprint Goal visibly displayed on the board or a virtual background. Ask one powerful question: "As we look at the board, how are we progressing against our Sprint Goal?" ​Why it works: This frames the entire conversation around a shared objective, not individual tasks. It shifts the mindset from "What I did" to "What we need to do." ​2. 🗺️ "Walk the Board," Don't "Question the People" ​The three questions ("What did you do? What will you do? Any impediments?") can become stale and encourage individual reporting. ​Technique: Facilitate by "walking the board," focusing on work items (PBIs), not people. Start from the items closest to 'Done' (right side of the board) and move left. ​Questions to ask: ​"What needs to happen to move this story to 'Done'?" ​"Who is available to help get this item across the line?" ​"This item hasn't moved in 3 days. What's the hidden blocker?" ​Why it works: It promotes swarming, identifies bottlenecks, and prioritizes finishing work over starting new work ​3. 🅿️ Master the "Parking Lot" ​The Daily Scrum is for identifying problems, not solving them. ​Technique: Gently intervene. "That sounds like a crucial conversation. Let's park that for the 'after-circle.' Who needs to be involved?" ​What it is: The "Parking Lot" is a visual space (whiteboard, chat) to list topics. The "After-Circle" is the optional meeting that happens immediately after the 15-min Daily Scrum, but only for those required to solve the parked issue. ​Why it works: It respects the 15-minute timebox and the time of the entire team ​ ​4.🤝 The "Impediment Huddle" ​"No impediments" is the most common anti-pattern. ​Technique: Don't just ask if there are impediments. Ask what is slowing them down. Listen for "soft" blockers: ​"I'm waiting for..." (A dependency) ​"I'm not sure how to..." (A knowledge gap) ​"This is harder than I thought..." (A potential scope issue) ​The Huddle: Immediately after the Daily, huddle with the person who raised the blocker. Your job isn't to solve it for them, but to ask, "How can I help you remove this?" or "Who do you need to talk to?" ​5.. ⏰ Empower the Start ​ ​Technique: If the team isn't starting on time, just stand silently. Let the silence work. Don't be the one to kick it off. ​Why it works: It teaches the team that this is their meeting and their responsibility.
