Snapchat<\/a> is hugely popular. Its prevalence means that if you\u2019re not careful, you\u2019re bound to get Snaps from random people, invites from folks you don\u2019t know, chat requests, users spamming you to increase their Snapchat score, and maybe even the occasional call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is, unless you protect your privacy on Snapchat. There are several settings you can enable or disable to lock down your Snapchat and effectively prevent all the above. You just need to know where in your settings to look.<\/p>\n\n\n

Beyond Snapchat\u2019s settings are general privacy reminders that you should adhere to, like knowing how<\/em> to use Snapchat so that you don\u2019t accidentally send the wrong person a private Snapchat or post something to your Story that you intended to send to an individual. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change Snapchat Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are several privacy-related\nsettings you should adjust to your preference and comfort level.\nThey\u2019re super easy to access and can be turned on or off at any\ntime if you decide to change your mind about them later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To change your Snapchat settings, open\nthe app and tap your profile image at the top left. Then, use the\nsettings\/gear button on the top right to list all the Snapchat\nsettings you can tweak.<\/p>\n\n\n

Protect Your Basic Details<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Your full name and birthday might be listed in your settings, and if they are, anyone who can see you on Snapchat can see it too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While these tiny facts about you might not seem like a security risk right off the bat, knowing the date you were born and your last name makes it rather easy for someone to research you online and dig up even more information about you, such as your hometown, address, workplace, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can remove your last name (or even\nyour entire name) so that new Snapchat friends only know you by your\nfirst name. Tap Display Name<\/strong> in the settings to make this\nchange.<\/p>\n\n\n

In the Birthday<\/strong> section, there is an option to disable Birthday Party<\/strong> so that on your birthday, Snapchat won\u2019t put a cake next to your name, thus preventing users from knowing that information.<\/p>\n\n\n

Something else that\u2019s considered fundamental to your identity on Snapchat is your username. Anyone who knows your username can add you as a friend, and the same goes for your Snapcode. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not share these items with anyone unless you want them to add you as a friend. If this information goes public, you\u2019re bound to get lots of messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suppress Notifications From Prying\nEyes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Notifications will appear on the lock\nscreen of your device and pop up as alerts unless you edit their\nbehavior. You\u2019ll want to make this change if you don\u2019t want just\nanyone who looks at your phone to see who is sending you Snaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open Notifications<\/strong> from the settings to see all the options. To disable all Snapchat notifications, simply remove the box next to Enable Notifications<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n

Another way to manage Snapchat\nnotifications is on a per-friend basis. Tap-and-hold on the friend\nand go to More <\/strong>> Message Notifications<\/strong>. You can\nsilence just that one person\u2019s Snaps without affecting your other\nfriends\u2019 settings.<\/p>\n\n\n

Make It Harder for People to Contact\nYou<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Most Snapchat users probably welcome strangers – there are conversations to be made, new friends to be had, and lots of time to waste sending random pictures to random people. If this isn\u2019t why you use Snapchat, it\u2019s best you take note of all of the different ways people can locate you on Snapchat so that you can block those access points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open the Mobile Number<\/strong> and Email<\/strong> settings and disable the Let others find me<\/strong> option in both areas so that random Snapchatters (or even friends) can\u2019t find you by searching for your number or email.<\/p>\n\n\n

Scroll down to Contact Me<\/strong> and change it to My Friends<\/strong> so that you don\u2019t get Snaps from people you don\u2019t know. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other option includes literally everyone, meaning that if someone has your username or Snapcode, they can send you images and video, start chats, and even call you directly without your approval.<\/p>\n\n\n

Another big concern you should have about your privacy on Snapchat is revealing where you are<\/em>. That\u2019s right! Snapchat is also a location tracker app<\/a>, but only if you let it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tap My Location<\/strong> and either enable Ghost Mode<\/strong> or choose specific friends that should have access to your physical location.<\/p>\n\n\n

If there\u2019s a pesky user that keeps\nadding you on Snapchat, then none of the above will really help. To\nstop him or her from harassing you, just block them. To do that, tap\ntheir face and use the three-dotted menu on the upper-right side of\nthe screen to Block<\/strong> and\/or Report<\/strong> them.<\/p>\n\n\n

Clear Local Data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Snapchat can retain your search history\nand chat details long after you performed them. If you share your\nphone with others or you\u2019re afraid someone will find these details\nif they use your device, it\u2019s important to know how to clean up\nthese privacy holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start with conversations. Depending on how each friend is set up in your Snapchat, chats between you might remain up to 24 hours after viewing them. You can manually delete these chats as well as adjust the viewing period to something much shorter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hold your finger down on the user in\nquestion and go to More <\/strong>> Clear Conversation History<\/strong>\nto erase past messages. To make new messages disappear from your\nSnapchat after you\u2019ve viewed them, go back into the More<\/strong>\nmenu but then choose Delete Chats<\/strong> > After Viewing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Protect Who Sees Your Snaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the worst feelings is sending a\ngoofy picture to someone you never intended to share it with. Below\nare directions for how to properly add more than one person to a Snap\nand how to protect your Snapchat stories from specific users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Review Recipients Before Sending<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After composing a new Snap, it\u2019s time\nto tap the arrow and choose which friends to add as recipients. You\ncan search for friends using the search bar or scroll and tap the\npeople that should receive the Snap.<\/p>\n\n\n

Before going any further, especially if\nyou\u2019ve added lots of people to it, take a quick breather and review\nwho will get the Snap. To do that, tap the names<\/em> at the bottom\nof the screen (not<\/strong> the blue arrow).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you select the names, you\u2019re\ngiven a clean list of all the friends who will receive your Snap.\nFrom there, you can tap any friend to remove them from the list. Just\nremember that once you tap that second blue arrow, the message will\nsend, and you can\u2019t reverse it!<\/p>\n\n\n

Restrict Who Can See Your Stories<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A Story is like a public Snap to all\nyour friends. It\u2019s a great way to advertise how you\u2019re feeling,\nwhat you\u2019re up to, new products you\u2019re selling, etc. If you want\nonly certain friends to be able to see your Snapchat Stories, you\nneed to learn how to make private Stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the settings, under View My\nStory<\/strong>, is an option to restrict who can see your Snapchat\nStories. Pick Friends Only<\/strong> or Custom<\/strong> to choose specific\nfriends.<\/p>\n\n\n
