There are two ways you can configure ESXi with a static IP: either via the web GUI interface or via the server console management screen.<\/p>\n<p>I found it a lot easier to do via the console, but I&#8217;ll list out both ways here just in case. Obviously, if you can&#8217;t get to the server physically, then you&#8217;ll want to use the web interface.<\/p>\n<h2>Set Static IP for ESXi via Console<\/h2>\n<p>First, you&#8217;ll want to get to the main screen on your ESXi server that tells you where to download the tools to manage the host.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/manage-from.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2981 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/manage-from.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/manage-from.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/manage-from-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/manage-from-80x33.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On this screen, you press <strong>F2<\/strong> to bring up the system customization screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/configure-network-management.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3013 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/configure-network-management.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/configure-network-management.jpg 680w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/configure-network-management-300x110.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/configure-network-management-80x29.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here you will want to arrow down to the <strong>Configure Management Network<\/strong> option. On the right-hand side, you&#8217;ll see information about the hostname and the current IPv4\/IPv6 addresses for the server.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ipv4-configuration.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3014 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ipv4-configuration.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ipv4-configuration.jpg 680w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ipv4-configuration-300x83.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ipv4-configuration-80x22.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you press Enter, you&#8217;ll get another screen where you can configure the network adapters, VLANs, DNS, etc. We want to change the IPv4 or IPv6 configuration, so highlight the appropriate option and press Enter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/set-static-ipv4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3015 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/set-static-ipv4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/set-static-ipv4.jpg 680w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/set-static-ipv4-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/set-static-ipv4-80x29.jpg 80w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/set-static-ipv4-617x225.jpg 617w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the IPv4 screen, you&#8217;ll want to highlight<strong> Set static IPv4 address and network configuration<\/strong> and then press the spacebar. When you do that, all the IPv4 config lines become editable. Arrow down and type in the new IP address, subnet mask and default gateway that you would like to use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/net-static-ip-esxi.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3016 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/net-static-ip-esxi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/net-static-ip-esxi.jpg 680w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/net-static-ip-esxi-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/net-static-ip-esxi-80x29.jpg 80w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/net-static-ip-esxi-617x225.jpg 617w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you are done, press Enter to save the changes. You&#8217;ll see another dialog that asks you to apply the changes and restart the management network. At the bottom, in the <strong>vSwitch Topology<\/strong> box, you&#8217;ll see the virtual name for the physical port being used on the server. In my case, it&#8217;s <strong>vmk0<\/strong>. Click on that to edit it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/edit-network-settings.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3021 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/edit-network-settings.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"382\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/edit-network-settings.png 382w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/edit-network-settings-300x246.png 300w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/edit-network-settings-61x50.png 61w, https:\/\/thebackroomtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/edit-network-settings-63x52.png 63w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here you should see all the current TCP\/IP configuration, which you can change by clicking<strong> Edit settings<\/strong>. You&#8217;ll be asked to restart the management network, which will update the IP info. Obviously, if you are doing this over the web interface, your connection to the server will disconnected.
