Remarks on Ludwig Wittgenstein's pictorial thinking in light of the diagnosis of autism

Abstract

Psychiatrists such as Michael Fitzgerald, Christopher Gillberg, and Yoshiki Ishisaka diagnosed Ludwig Wittgenstein posthumously with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Taking into account this diagnosis, as well as the fact that people with ASD tend to have fixed, concrete, literal ways of talking and thinking, I analyze in this paper how Wittgenstein’s pictorial thinking is reflected in his texts, including the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus – the book that represents Wittgenstein’s first philosophy, which is based on a picture theory of language – and the Philosophical Investigations – the book that synthesizes Wittgenstein’s second philosophy, in which he presents a critical review of the Tractarian conception of language.
