What is WordPerfect Office?

Canadian company Corel Corporation offers the WordPerfect Office Suite for word document, pdf and spreadsheet generation. It includes epublishing features, rich presentation capabilities, and compatibility with more ubiquitous (e.g. Microsoft Office) word processors and office suites.

Categories & Use Cases

WordPerfect is simply the best!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use WordPerfect Office for pretty much all internal documents and for documents that will be converted to PDF for clients. I particularly prefer WordPerfect for large documents (e.g., 50 pages). It has great capabilities for dealing with references and footnotes. I also like the fact that I can use the "Reveal Codes" option to see what tags are in the document and to edit them if need be. I also use Quattro Pro. It is not as powerful as Excel but often simpler to use. About the only time I don't use WordPerfect (or Excel) is if I need to send the raw (i.e., not PDF) document to someone outside of the organization. Such documents usually go in Word format. Although WordPerfect has the capability to save documents in Word format the translation is often not perfect and formatting is affected.

Pros

  • Reveal codes - see what tags are affecting formatting
  • References and footnotes
  • Generation of table of contents (on large documents) - a bit tricky to use but powerful

Cons

  • WordPerfect needs to improve its interoperability with Word. OpenOffice does this better than WordPerfect Office (WP), so WP should be able to as well.
  • The "Presentations" tool (part of the suite) is great for simple presentations but not as powerful as PowerPoint. It hasn't seen significant enhancements for some time and could benefit from them.
  • Examples of how to use the "references" feature would save people time in trying to figure out how to use it.

Return on Investment

  • WordPerfect allows me to more easily create documents exactly how I want them to appear.
  • Challenges with working in a "Word" world force me to have both products on my computers (in order to use Word documents).
  • The lack of compatibility with Word products can be a feature. If I have a presentation that I don't want to get passed around I do it in "Presentations". PowerPoint can't open it. It is a poor man's copy protection.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

IMHO, WordPerfect is still the best word processing software ever made. It makes formatting easy (important for lawyers) and "reveal codes" allows the user adjust the appearance of a document much easier than Word or Google docs. I use WordPerfect for all my correspondence and court papers and agreements. I have created numerous macros myself which makes my time much more efficient. I will retire before I stop using it.

Pros

  • auto-paragraph numbering
  • macros are easy to create
  • templates save a lot of time
  • allow formatting changes easier with "reveal codes"

Cons

  • conversion from Word is problematice to put it kindly
  • it doesn't offer formatting options over the words, only in the toolbar
  • track changes is compared to Word is weak

Return on Investment

  • WordPerfect's word processor saves me lots of time compared to Word
  • I have never used any of WordPerfect Office's "other programs" since Microsoft so dominates the field
  • I once told another attorney I was working with that I use WordPerfect and she responded, "Oh, you're the one."
