FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Chester is a beautiful city full of history and fabulous...

Chester is a beautiful city full of history and fabulous Tudor buildings. It is a small city and easy to get around. Walk the city walls which surround the centre which take you down to the river and past the racecourse and past the Roman amphitheater. The full route is less than an hour. Also visit the cathedral which is spectacular. We did a murder mystery quiz of the city which was fun.

We walked along all the streets .The ‘Rows ‘was interesting. We spent a day at Port Sunlight and Lady Lever’s Art Gallery and museum. It was fantastic. The Grosvenor museum was also interesting. A short drive takes you to Beeston Castle with fantastic views. The local buses take you through and around the City. For anyone interested in architecture Chester is the place to visit.

I have visited Chester regularly over the past 30 years.

I have visited Chester regularly over the past 30 years. I've always enjoyed my visits as there is such a variety of things to do. It's history is well represented as many things you can do will tell you more about this. There are lots of good shops, and places to eat either for a snack or good meal out. The Grosvenor Museum, Diva, and sick to death are all worth a visit, as is a river trip and the roman gardens for some peace. I've not been for the past 2 years and was impressed at how much work has been done ( the market hall), and is ongoing to make your Chester experience a good one. Transport Interchange services are excellent with Chester Zoo, Cheshire Oaks, the Blue Planet and Liverpool just a short ride away, free if you have a bus pass.

We go quite often to Chester.

We go quite often to Chester. It’s a wonderful city full of history. There’s plenty to do there and a vast amount of fantastic restaurants. We walked the City walls, saw the Roman Garden and Ampitheatre. Our meal at Carbonara’s was the best Italian meal we’ve had. Everything was freshly made and piping hot. It’s family owned and everyone was so friendly and helpful.

Hotel is situated central to Chester city centre. The hotel staff are welcoming and friendly they make you feel at ease. The hotel is beautifully decorated, right outside the dining room window is a canal where barge boats travel up and down, while eating the great food you can sit and watch either the boats or the ducks on the canal it's really relaxing. This hotel has on site parking as well as a parking lot which is situated straight across the road. We will definitely go back to this hotel.
