The conference will be held in Tokyo, Japan on December 9-12, 2024. SIGIR-AP 2024 accepts original high-impact contributions related to Information Retrieval and supports two types of submissions: Regular submissions and SIGIR-Revise-and-Resubmit submissions. We focused on understanding and modeling users' intentions and preferences, and explored how this knowledge can be used to support intelligent agents and enhance performance in tasks such as question answering. Vanessa Murdock liked thisVanessa Murdock liked this15 years at Amazon! Who would have known? I joined because it felt like a startup. A couple hundred people on a couple of floors of a 1970’s building in Paris (“Maillot 2000”). No air conditioning, just the sweat of hard work, some good laughs, and the excitement of bringing a new vertical (fashion) to life. Fast forward to today, as I’m leading a team offsite in Seattle, on the Day1 building overlooking the city and the 40+ building that compose Amazon’s campus, I’m left wondering: Is this still the same company that I joined? What has kept me at Amazon for so long, across 4 cities, 3 countries and 2 continents? Customer obsession is the first reason. Whatever the size of the business that I led, I always thought I had an opportunity to improve customers’ daily lives. When I launched fashion in France, when I launched Alexa in Europe, when I scaled Amazon’s Choice, my biggest reward was when I was telling someone about my work and they replied “Oh yes, I use that every day. This helps me a lot!” What's changed is the scale, from France to Europe to Worldwide, from hundreds of thousands of customers to hundreds of millions. Innovation is the second reason. I remember that some of my co-hires were surprised that Amazon systems had such glaring gaps, when it was already a global e-commerce leader. Innovation is messy, scrappy, and always a question of priorities-it’s ok to have gaps, they just have to be lower priority, or to be a source of relentless focus. This systematic focus on solving the highest customer problems, and on willing to be at the same time creative, bold, and scrappy about it, is what keeps Amazon such an innovative company in my perspective. Alexa was a bold attempt at inventing the next generation user interface, which led me into learning about AI, building my tech skills, and, fast forward to a few years later, to my current role reinventing ad user experiences with GenAI. Customer obsession, innovation. They rely on a strong culture, and the people that make it vibrant. Amazon is constantly on the edge of losing it. But so far, I remain thrilled by how such a large, high impact company has retained its pioneer spirit and customer-centric soul.

I'm thrilled to extend my involvement with the Amazon Books team — it’s a privilege to collaborate with such a capable and thoughtful group. Seit dem 1. März hat Dr. Marcel Hauck die Professur für Medieninformatik am Fachbereich Wirtschaft inne. Sein Schwerpunkt in Forschung und Lehre liegt auf der Entwicklung und Evaluierung von IT-Systemen im Medienkontext. Der 38-Jährige ist auch beruflich als Medieninformatiker tätig und kann damit Theorie und Praxis aktiv miteinander verbinden. Bereits seit Anfang 2023 ist er bei ARD Online für die Softwareentwicklung für Empfehlungssysteme verantwortlich. Dort plant, entwickelt und testet er die algorithmischen Empfehlungen der ARD Mediathek und ARD Audiothek. In seiner kooperativen Promotion an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz und der Hochschule Mainz widmete er sich zuvor der Wirkung von Empfehlungssystemen in öffentlich-rechtlichen Mediatheken. Die akademische Laufbahn von Prof. Dr. Marcel H. begann im Wintersemester 2013 mit dem Bachelorstudium Medien, IT & Management am Fachbereich Wirtschaft. Anschließend absolvierte er den Master of Science in Medieninformatik an der Hochschule Trier – beide Studiengänge schloss er mit Auszeichnung ab. Zwischenzeitlich war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter, Teamleiter und Vertretungsprofessor an der Hochschule Mainz. Zuvor war Professor Hauck zwölf Jahre in der Sparkasse Rhein-Nahe tätig, zunächst im IT-Bereich und später im Online-Marketing. Dort absolvierte er auch eine Ausbildung zum Informatikkaufmann. I have learnt a lot during this period and i am very grateful to all the people I met and worked with since 2017 when Hugo Zaragoza, Roi Blanco, Juan Fco Fernández Carrasco, Marc Poch Riera, Marçal Juan Llaó and myself started the amazon tech side in Barcelona. Know your neighbors: Web spam detection using the web topology
Proceedings of the 30th annual international ACM SIGIR conference on Research and development in information retrieval
Web spam can significantly deteriorate the quality of search engine results. Thus there is a large incentive for commercial search engines to detect spam pages efficiently and accurately. In this paper we present a spam detection system that combines link-based and content-based features, and uses the topology of the Web graph by exploiting the link dependencies among the Web pages. We find that linked hosts tend to belong to the same class: either both are spam or both are non-spam.

Author feedback is used to rank ads for display on the triggering page. Preferably author feedback is also incorporated into ad clustering and/or ad ranking formulae within the system.
